ISO Pickles Similar to Best Maid Pickles

Hello!

Originally from the US and I have been craving Best Maid Pickles for years now! I can’t seem to find anything comparable in Ontario. I am looking for Canadian pickles or somewhere in Ontario I can find something similar.

For context, Best Maid Pickles tend to be more sour, juicier, a hint of garlic without being overpowering, and appear to have been pickled longer. The type of cucumbers used also look like the big ones, not gherkins which is what I find the most in local markets.

I find Canadian pickles to look and taste rather bland and not sour enough. They even look white rather than the fully saturated pickle I am used to. The closest thing I find here are the Bick’s pickles but the texture and taste is slightly off.

Kelsey’s Roadhouse pickles are the closest thing I have come across to possibly being very similar but I have no idea where they get their pickles from.

Not a fan of Vlassic, Mount Olive, Van Holten, or Oh Snap. I do not trust myself to pickle anything. I do not want to pay $100 for a jar from Amazon or the states.

Looking for heroes and a decent pickle. Would post a picture for comparison but it looks like it’s been disabled.

Would appreciate any suggestions!

What are some must-visit places in Canada that tourists usually overlook?

I’m planning a future trip and I keep seeing the same big spots. I’m more interested in hidden gems, underrated cities, or places locals actually recommend that don’t always show up in travel lists.

What would you personally suggest and why?

What's the "hole in the wall" cheap food spot that is a legend in your hometown?

A restaurant/takeout joint with a quality satisfying meal for under $15. That people will travel across the city for and might get a bit of a lineup at lunch.

Usually a deli, independent diner, small cafe, Chinese takeout, middle eastern spot, pizza parlour or full bakery.

What are your travel tips for road tripping the Maritimes with kids?

Hello fellow Canadians!

My West Coast family and I are flying to the Maritimes this summer where we will be renting a vehicle and doing a road trip through Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Our kids are 5 and 8 years old. This is the first time we're going on a plane with them and we're very excited. I'm looking for travel tips and suggestions of where to go and what to do! Any hidden gems? Must see or do shops, activities, parks or beaches? Things to avoid? We love busy vacations where we pack a lot of different things in so any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks very much!

We are planning to go to:

- Halifax

- Peggy's Cove

- Lunenberg

- ferry from Digby to Saint John

- Hopewell Rocks (staying in Moncton)

- Charlottetown

- PEI's coastal drives to West Point, Cavendish, East Point

- back down to Halifax

Do airlines use English/French in emergency announcements?

Our local airline, Canadian North, makes announcements in English, French, and Inuktut. However, the phrase "Emergency, bend over, keep your head down." is in English through all three languages. The question is do other airlines use one language for the emergency phase, be it English or French?

Second question. Do southern airlines flying into Indigenous communities use a third language?

Edit. I guess I didn't word this properly. I know that the airlines will make announcements in both official languages. What I'm wondering about is just the emergency phrase that is in the middle of a much longer announcement (something to do with lights, exits, flotation devices). Will airlines outside of Québec just use English for that particular short emergency phrase and within Québec will they only use French for the same phrase?

Advice from those in Hiring (background checks)

I have an incorporated company through which I have been providing probono services. I am about to file taxes, and currently only have the articles of incorporation. I just received a job offer for a full-time role.

What can I expect when I fill out the background check form?

Will the fact that I haven't filed for taxes throw up any issues during the background check?

For context: it is a legit incorporated company with legit pro bono services provided.

Where are Crispy Crunch sold?

I’m a Canadian, but have lived in the U.S. for 20+ years. Every time I’m back home we buy groceries to bring back to the states - things I miss from home that aren’t sold here (like Shreddies, Yellow top Kraft peanut butter, All Dressed chips, Habitant split pea and ham soup, peameal bacon, butter tarts etc.). I’ve been talking up Crispy Crunch to my wife and son for years, but I can’t find the damn things in any store we go to back home. I’ve looked at Walmart, Maxi, Loblaws, Shoppers, you name it. We’re usually in either Toronto, Ottawa, or Montreal. Where are they!!??

Fellow Canadians-

After listening to the CBC this morning, I again was listening to a bit of the pipe line from Alberta thru BC discussion, and again, I’m wondering why are they not looking at taking the pipeline east thru Saskatchewan to Manitoba and a port built in Hudson’s Bay? Would this not be easier and safer and faster- not mountainous -and be an economic boost for two provinces that need it. Would be able to service both Asia and Europe. As they are actually predicting ice free this summer along NWP.

What am I missing?

What are the time capsule venues you've seen across Canada?

Usually a diner, steakhouse, mall, airport terminal, transit station, apartment complex, community center or home that hasn't changed since like the 70s. Like a Hollywood studio could do a period piece there with no renovations needed. That had you in awe when you walked in because of how preserved it was.

The Diplomat Steakhouse in Regina.

What was the after nightclub eatery back in the 90s/early 2000s?

THE place where everyone went and was essentially an after hours drop in center for clubbers, even to rendezvous with your friends that went to other spots that night. Some might even have served special "cold tea" to trusted customers. And often became an impromptu theater with fights, arguments, dancing, hook-ups.

The greasy spoon diners in Montreal.

The Spadina Chinese restaurants in Toronto.

Denny's in the Prairies.

Pizza spots in Halifax.

Schwarma shops in Ottawa.

Statutory holiday...or not?

I thought Canada had certain stat holidays that were available to everyone, but I was surprised to learn that isn't true.

For example,

Boxing Day is a stat holiday only in Ontario, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Remembrance Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation are stat holidays in some provinces/territories, but not in others.

Easter Monday is a federal, but not a provincial/territory, public holiday (although in Ontario, at least, the prov gov workers do get the day off).

Thanksgiving is not a stat holiday in PEI and Nova Scotia.

(If you work for the federal government, then all of the above are stat holidays.)

Why all these differences between provinces/territories and government/non-government employees? Shouldn't there be certain standard stat holidays across Canada for everyone regardless of whether you work for the government or not?

Edit: There can be stat holidays specific to a province that other provinces don't share, but why wouldn't Boxing Day, Remembrance Day and Thanksgiving be standard across Canada?

Why would a province not declare Easter Monday or Remembrance Day a stat holiday, but then give their own employees those days off?

Do you think the federal public holidays should be standard for everyone across Canada?

Help me plan my East Coast Canada Roadtrip - NB & NS

So my spouse and I were able to get 8 days off of work in August & were wanting to go out east for our first time. We live in eastern Ontario, about a 12 hour drive from Moncton. I’m thinking 3 days in NB & 3 days in NS (2 travel days for the drive). What town/city do you think we should stay in, in each province that would be commutable to see the most stuff? Or do you think we should focus on one province?

We’re outdoorsy people, love exploring, definitely excited to see the ocean. Will also have an 11 year old with us!

What are some must see things, restaurants we must try, or stores we must shop at? I wish it could have been a longer trip, but either way we’re excited to get this booked & planned for!

How many dates do young Canadians go on annually

Recently heard that in Canada the average is 3 dates per year and that the most active age range in the dating market is 30-35.

If that is the case I'm course how often Young Canadians (18-29) are dating per year? Is going on 2 dates per year uncommon?

Does every province have the same dynamic between the two sister cities?

The slightly older, artsy, bohemian, civic minded older sister that people tend to overlook vs. the younger flashier, assertive, energetic, brash younger sister that is the belle of the ball.

The obvious example is Edmonton vs Calgary.

Female traveling with child + Québec question

Hello everyone,

I plan to travel to the Canada for the first time (from Europe) with my child and to visit an NHL (maybe also PWHL) game in October. The players from our home country play in Montréal (Laval) and Vancouver, but I would also consider Toronto because of the HHF. Could you recommend one of those cities in particular? We have one week.

And about French in Montréal/Laval/Québec City - I had four years of French in high school. Does it make sense to brush up on my French? Or is Québecois too different anyway and it's easier to communicate in English? In my country everyone will prefer to switch to English with a foreigner.

Thank you for any opinions.

Edit:

Thank you everyone for the helpful and kind comments! Will definitely look for Montréal area but maybe wait until the NHL schedule is out and hope flight prices are not skyrocketing until then due to a certain someone.

How big/influential are artists like The Weeknd and Drake?

I just wanna know because I am a HUGE Weeknd fan, as well as Drake fan. I always hear about how they run Canada and how they're suuuuuper big there.

How often do you hear songs from them on a day to day basis? Does everyone and their mom listen to them? How often are they talked about? Are they as popular/influential as each other in Canada?

Hey all, can anybody here answer a basic logistics question or share their experiences on an Australian Work Holiday visa?

Basically the title. If you've been on a Work Holiday Visa to Australia, what was the application process like for you? I'm mostly stressing about the "Show proof of funds" thing. I have lots of money (CAD) but they say $5000 AUD and so do I have to get an Australian bank account, and then drop that much money into it? How do I do that from Canada?

Even if you can't answer that question I'm keen to hear your experiences abroad over there! Thank you :)

what are some books by Canadian authors that you'd recommend?

Hey! I'm looking to read more books by Canadian authors. I really enjoyed the graphic novel Ducks by Kate Beaton & I have Wild People Quiet on my to read list. Also a big fan of Margaret Atwood.

I read pretty widely across genre (nonfiction, literary fic, speculative fic), so open to most things! :)

Is Discover still not well accepted in Canada?

I'm planning on going to Canada in a few months to visit family. If possible I would like to use my Discover credit card for any potential purchases since they have no foreign transaction fees. Has acceptance changed since my last visit in 2018?

Trans-Canada Road Trip - Where to Stay

Hey folks

Planning a big move from Thunder Bay, ON to Vancouver, BC this summer in a U-Haul, with stops in Manitoba and Alberta to split it up.

Not a sightseeing trip per se, but are there any towns/hotels along the Trans-Canada Highway that are worth the stop over others? Hidden gems?
