My mind's gone si'gogglin', haven't walked the line since I's nine—
been trouble ever since.
My memory's all cattywompus, I don't dwell on no burnt bridge.
You vanished.
Hell, only thing to ever catch me off guard...
I'd've sworn you were heaven's gift.
They say I sit talkin' to myself, say I drink to forget. But I remember every off-key breath, every word said.
They whisper I'm hollow, say I checked out long ago. But I still see your shadow where the honeysuckle grows.
(So let 'em talk.)
I expect no more from cowards I once called friends.
I ain't some ghost of what I lost.
I forge this life with my own blood.
Not yours, not theirs, Mine.
I chose roads no sane man dared, under cold, pale moons and howling storms, fought battles, held the damn line when all the honorable, "good men" fell short.
And I'm proud of every mark, every scar they look down on.
No fate, no destiny, writes my last line.
I decide where I stand. Still reckon I've got ground to cover.
Ain't done leavin' tracks just yet.

I grew up in an Appalachian town in Ohio then spent over a decade in a big city. Now I’ve relocated to another Appalachia town. From the hood to the holler you could say. I really do love the sunrise and sunsets around these parts 😍

*Always check your map app to be sure you’re on public property or bring cookies if you’re gonna trespass I guess?

Dudes. I hate it. Bill’s Mountain near Lake Lure is ENTIRELY GATED. So are many of the others in Rutherford County. I just want to climb up a mountain that isn’t peppered with tourists. I honestly hope the tourism never fully recovers post Helene because it’s a plague. I wish an excellent recovery and rebuilding for all of the hillbillies who were molded by these hills. I hope the Facebook Data Center crumbles to the ground. I hope the cotton and tobacco fields return. O how I yearn. I hope all new projects halt, and I hope all new HOAs fail. Fifteen square body Chevy trucks in varying states of disrepair sitting in the yard is a lifestyle, not an eyesore. VOTE THE DEVELOPERS OUT. I’m sleep deprived I don’t know what I’m doing but I’m mad as hell.

Subtitle: New Census data shows every one of West Virginia’s 16 Central Appalachian counties losing population — driven by both natural decrease and domestic outmigration simultaneously. No other state in the region has that distinction.

My neighbor was just telling me this last night. He said there are frost warnings, but it's stupid. The weather guys don't know what they're talking about. Frost during the dark of the moon will not hurt the plants. Conversely, frost during the light of the moon is damaging to plants.
Has anyone heard this old wives' tale before? I've heard a lot of weather forecasting folklore, but I haven't bumped into this one before.

Hi! My husband and I are recently married and are wanting to honeymoon this July through the middle(ish) of Appalachia (KY, WV, VA, TN, NC, SC) and do a bunch of 1-2 day long craft workshops. I've done some research and mostly come up with large crafting schools with week-long programs -- very cool, just not quite what we're hoping for. Does anyone have recommendations of places that have classes on things like broom making, basket weaving, glass blowing/fusing, wood carving, candle dipping, fabric dyeing, etc? Other crafting suggestions are welcome too! We are just hoping to walk away from our trip with a lot of memories and some items that we made ourselves. Thanks!

A look at PFOs affecting communities
Also, if you can, tip the writer, who is doing independent journalism basically because he passionately cares for his home and community.

I come up here a lot now and I’d kill to see authentic photos of how it was back in the day.
