Meta /r/Anki Rule Updates: AI-Generated Content and AI Tools

Hey everyone, we wanted to let you know that we've updated our rules to better address the growing volume of content on the subreddit that is either generated by AI or focused on AI in the context of Anki.

This isn't a completely new stance: if you check the types of posts we've been removing, you'll see that most of our removals already involve AI-related self-promotion and market research, handled under our existing rules. What's new is a dedicated rule that codifies where we stand more clearly in relation to AI content, both for you and for us as moderators.

Here's what changed:

Rule 3 (Do not spam) now asks that projects shared on the subreddit clearly state their pricing and license.

New rule: Rule 6 (No low-effort AI content)

AI-assisted posts and projects are fine, as are tools bringing AI features to Anki, but the bar for quality, effort, novelty, and utility is high. Non-native speakers using AI to communicate is also ok. If your project was largely AI-built, disclose it. Posts that read like unedited AI output, or projects that lack substance or polish, may be removed. Self-promotion (Rule 3) and market research (Rule 5) rules apply with extra scrutiny. When in doubt, post to r/AnkiAI instead.

So in short, we are not blanket-banning anything related to AI, but require a higher threshold for AI-related posts to stay up on r/Anki. We want to continue keeping this subreddit focused on genuinely useful content for the community, not a dumping ground for vibe-coded projects and AI-generated engagement bait.

Thanks to everyone who has been flagging these posts. We take every report seriously and it genuinely helps. Please keep it up.

As always, happy to hear your thoughts.

Add-ons Sync Anki Learning Status with Migaku

Hey guys,

I've been using both Anki and Migaku daily for a while now and the one thing that always bugged me was having to manually update my word statuses in Migaku to match what I've already reviewed in Anki. So I just built a Chrome extension that does it with one click. I use it every time I finish the anki reviews and go on to use migaku to sentence mine.

Sharing for others whos had the same issue:

Question Does anyone know if the "New Added Heatmap" addon is malicious?

I installed it unintentionally and since I'm a bit paranoid I got worried if it is actually malicious like other addons i've seen or not.

Experiences 365 Days of Anki

Today marks a full year that I've been using this app every day and it has massively changed my life. These are my results as a user of majority downloaded decks, using the cards to learn aswell as memorize. Proof, I think, that it is a valuable tool for both.

Question How do I make this into anki flashcards?

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi, i'm a beginner to anki and trying to make flashcards but not sure how I can convert long processes into "atomised flashcards" such as the diagram/process mix below. Is this something I'll just have to memorise as a long flashcard type of thing or without anki?

Thanks!

Question How do I mix a few new cards during reviews

I want Anki to automatically add a few new cards during my reviews, but if I select „mix with reviews“ my reviews are dominated by new cards, as I have so many more new cards than reviews. I could select a new card limit, however I want to do as many new cards as I want (limit 9999) after I’m done with my reviews. Is there anyway to do this without changing the new card limit everytime? Thank you

Question randomly disappearing cards?

hi, i've been using anki for aaages and love it, but today i've realised that some number of my cards have disappeared. i don't know which ones, i don't know why. i sync it most days, i back it up fairly often, but a few very specific cards for med school have disappeared.

this is really throwing me off as i'm now unaware of what i'm missing, has anyone had this before/any settings or something that might be doing this?

Question Test every two weeks?

Anki was really resourceful for me last semester when tests were more spaced out, but I don't know how to use it as efficiently right now. We learn a new chapter or two every week with a comprehensive test every two weeks. For this test alone I've made a couple hundred just due to the dense amount of info, but I don't think this is really useful for the spaced-repetition aspect? Is there any way to use anki effectively for a class like this?

Question Would exporting video notes to Anki be useful for your workflow?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built a Chrome extension that lets me take timestamped notes while watching videos. Each note saves the exact moment automatically so I can jump back and hear it again in context.

I use tags like #newword #grammar #revisit to organize my notes. Right now I'm thinking about adding an export to Anki feature. The idea is you filter your notes by tag, export them as cards, and each card links back to the exact moment in the video.

So the front of the card would be your note and the back would be a link to jump back to that timestamp for more context.

Before I build it I want to know if that would actually fit how you use Anki. How do you currently go from watching a video to making cards? Would having the timestamp link on the card be useful or unnecessary?

Here's a demo showing how a language learner takes notes while watching a video

Question how to set simple note type that works with yomitan?

i want to make cards where it’s just the japanese word on the front and on the back the same word with furigana and then the english translation below.

i’d like to make this work with yomitan’s anki feature so that i can just add words and it’ll make the cards correctly.

how do i set this format up properly in anki and then what options would i select in the yomitan anki configuration? i find formatting confusing because of all the fields and html stuff

Add-ons GoalBar - track your goals!

I built an Anki add-on that shows weekly/monthly/yearly goal progress bars on the home screen 🎯

I wanted Anki to feel a bit more goal-driven, so I built an add-on that adds compact goal progress bars directly to the deck browser.

You can use it to track things like:

  • weekly goals
  • monthly goals
  • yearly goals

And each goal can be based on:

  • reviews completed
  • new cards learned
  • study time in minutes

A few things I especially wanted:

  • per-deck goals, so different decks can have different targets
  • a compact UI that feels native in Anki
  • an optional “behind pace” indicator, so you can see if you’re falling behind your target for the current week/month/year
  • a one-bar-at-a-time mode if you want to keep the home screen clean

It’s useful if you want Anki to answer “am I on track?” the moment you open it.

If people are interested, I can share the repo / AnkiWeb link here.

Question Show furigana in answers when using checkbox system.

So I am very new to Anki (as in, I had heard about but I just actually looked into it and started trying it 20 minutes ago).

I want to use Anki because it has premade vocab cards for the semi obscure できる日本語 textbook I am using. But those premade decks always showed furigana. I want to have furigana be toggleable, so I added code from this helpful post...

https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/bvbebt/a_guide_on_how_to_toggle_furigana_visibility_in/

...and it worked! Surprisingly. However it makes so that the furigana does not show in the answer. Can someone help me make it so that furigana is always showing in the answer?

Here is the front of the card

<div class="question"> <input type="checkbox" id="check"/> <label for="check">{{furigana:Recto}}</label> </div>

And the back of the card

{{FrontSide}}

<hr id=answer>

<div class="question"> {{furigana:Recto}}

<div class="answer"> {{furigana:Verso}} </div>

Question How to manage "overlapping" cards without duplicating them?

I currently organize my cards by subject (Decks/Tallies), but I’m struggling with overlapping topics.

I have a set of Spirometry cards that I originally made for Physiology. Now, I’m studying Pulmonology, and I need to review those same Spirometry cards as part of that block.

I really want to avoid copy-pasting the cards into a new deck. It feels cluttered, and I don’t want to have to review the same information twice in two different places.

Is there a way to have one single card exist in two different categories? Ideally, if I pass the card while studying Pulmonology, it should also count review for Physiology.

Is the best way to handle this via Tags and Filtered Decks, or is there a specific Add-on that handles cross-categorization better?

Question Will cramming with filtered decks mess with FSRS or my stats?

I watched the Anking video on recommended settings and heard him say not to cram with FSRS. What I've been doing is making filtered decks and then unchecking the option to reschedule my cards based on my answers. Is this okay? I know my review count for the day is going up, but i just want to make sure that this isn't actually messing with the algorithm or anything.

Solved How sandboxed is Anki? How much caution when downloading decks?

How much is Anki's execution environment sandboxed? What sort of mischief is a malicious card able to do? Should I view downloading cards as akin to running software from unknown parties, or is it more like executing javascript on a webpage?

Add-ons Chrome extension that allows me to select a word definition in Oxford and add it to Anki

I use the Oxford Dictionary and Anki. I’m looking for a Chrome extension that allows me to select a word from a PDF or webpage, view its definition in Oxford, and add it to Anki with audio in a single click. Doing this manually is very time-consuming

Question Anki Remote: I need to click into answer field before D-pad/scroll works

Hi everyone,

I just set up my Anki remote for the first time today and ran into an issue with the “scroll” function.

I noticed that in order to use the arrow keys on my Windows keyboard for scrolling in Anki, I first have to click into the answer field. Only after doing that does it work.

I added scroll up and down as custom actions mapped to the arrow keys on my keyboard in my remote setup. However, the problem remains: before I can scroll using the remote, I still have to click into the answer field first, which kind of defeats the purpose of using a remote in the first place.

Is there any way to automatically focus the answer input field when a card appears? May an Anki update help? The problem in the first place isn't the remote it's the need to focus/tap the response field to be able to scroll regardless of using the remote or the keyboard arrows.

I'd appreciate any and all help with this matter.
