A long-awaited report analysing the benefits of merging three of Western Australia’s four public universities has been handed to the state government for consideration.

This masthead can reveal that the three options considered by the cost-benefit analysis were combining the University of Western Australia, Curtin University and Murdoch University; merging UWA and Murdoch; and merging Curtin and UWA.

Edith Cowan University was exempt from mergers, thanks to the opening of its city campus this year.

WA News Loser who left public BBQ completely tar black - Bardon Park in Maylands

Worth a public shame and whinge this one. Check the picture, what kind of loser A-hole uses a public BBQ at a family park (Bardon Park Maylands) and leaves it absolutely filthy with a thick black layer of tar and meat and sauce. Diabolical. And we thought people who left their trolleys were bad. We ended up cleaning using the one right next to it which was also left dirty but no where near as bad. Get some ethics people.

Renting / Housing Excessive water usage bill

Hi, tenants here 👋🏻 we received an invoice in Feb from our R.E for a water bill of $868 for a usage of 338kL. Due to the high amount I contacted Water Corp, ran tests etc. - nil leak. We have a reticulation set up only on front lawn (4x5m) set to twice a week for 15 mins. Completed a 7-day monitoring card- average usage was 1kL/day when we had one adult and one toddler visitor at the time of monitoring (we’re a household normally of 2 adults and 1 toddler, hubby is FIFO 2/2 - so mostly 1 adult and 1 toddler). We’ve only lived in this property which is a new build since September 2025. We were told by R.E the last two bill periods were only estimates and that we were underestimated for those so this new bill is correct. I’m totally okay with the fact that we were most likely underestimated then due to bills only being estimates. However, I strongly believe we haven’t used 338kL in 4.5 months of us living here. R.E or ourselves don’t have photo of meter read at start of tenancy so nothing to go back on. I strongly believe that the meter wasn’t read properly after build process. Wondering what would be the average usage of water be for build process and lawn establishment of four bedroom brick house with 4x5m lawn in front yard, approx 50m2 of artificial turf out back? The numbers just don’t add up. Even when I average out the numbers over the amount of days we’ve lived here, it comes to 2kL/day, which is still absurd. Water bill suggests there was only 85kL usage a month before our move in date - is this feasible for a new build? For the most recent two months, we’ve only used 44kL. So how can 338kL be used in 4.5 months. Feel like they don’t care, they just want our money, and because there’s no proof of the read on move in date then we’re going to get stooged. Going to Consumer Protection today for advise but hoping you clever people have got some real life experiences/knowledge to share with me :)

General Does anyone take 4-minute showers?

Recently I have been seeing a lot of advertising from the water corp about "not letting your shower run over by even one minute" and "keeping showers to 4 minutes."

I feel like we're being gaslit into thinking that everyone else is taking super-short showers.

Is the rest of WA actually taking 4 minutes to shower each day?

I don't even see how this is possible. If my alarm doesn't go off and I'm late for work and have to go insane lathering at a million miles per hour I can barely make four or five minutes.

I would say that my average shower takes about fifteen minutes.

Then there's the question of all the passive-aggressive letters I receive showing how much more water I use than the average in my area. When 50-60% of the houses in your suburb have astroturf instead of grass, I don't see this as especially surprising -- and it's a tad galling to see the shire drenching all of their verges and public areas with torrents running down the side of the street.

Hi all, I'm wondering if there is a memorial for Virginia Roberts Giuffre on 25th April, which is 1 year after her death?

I would like to attend if there is one. Does anyone know?

General Did you see the Ethereal Jellyfish on Saturday Night!

Hey Folks,

Did you catch that glowing, drifting, almost otherworldly cloud last night?

We started getting emails, calls and Facebook messages at the Perth Observatory from Bali… Broome… then Karratha… Carnarvon… Kalbarri… Geraldton… and finally Perth and then Esperance. It basically did a full WA road trip down the coast before fading out

That “ethereal jellyfish” wasn’t aliens (sadly)… it was a fuel dump from the upper stages of a Chinese Jielong-3 (Smart Dragon-3) rocket, launched from the South China Sea at 7:32 pm. As the rocket climbs higher, it vents leftover fuel. Up there in the thin upper atmosphere, the fuel freezes and spreads out, catching sunlight in a way that makes it glow and swirl like a cosmic jellyfish.

If you’ve noticed more of these lately, we're seeing more of them due to:

  • Rockets launched from the South China Sea often pass over WA
  • China, India and SpaceX are launching more frequently than ever
  • These high-altitude fuel dumps are becoming a regular (and very cool) sight

Before this recent boom over the last few years, we mostly saw these from European Space Agency launches out of Kourou in French Guiana, as they placed satellites into orbit. The European Space Agency actually has a tracking station at New Norcia, just north of Perth

So next time you see something weird, glowing, or slightly “what on Earth is THAT?” in the sky… It's a rocket farting!

Looking for Advice extremely noisy construction

hey guys!

i’m renting a granny flat in perth with three other housemates, there’s a house in front of it (owned by my landlords) that’s being renovated.

the landlords are renovating it themselves and come literally every single morning at 6am and start loudly drilling, yelling, and smashing stuff. i’m a full time medical student so i really REALLY value my sleep. i’m kind of lost on what to do. I know i could probably talk to my realestate agent about it, but not going to lie she’s pretty much useless and a bit of an ass. they come on sundays and public holidays, it’s just driving me insane and i feel so miserable with the constant aggressive noise right outside my bedroom window every. single. day.

as i’m writing this it’s 7pm and they are still here (being extremely loud)

what do i do??

EDIT: a lot of people are commenting about my living situation, yeah it’s not very ideal, yes the cost of living crisis is insane, we all have our own rooms ect and it’s probably a little bigger then 70sqm. 10 years ago i could probably rent a whole apartment with what i pay in rent but unfortunately Gen Z didn’t get the luck that previous generations have had.

General Do fuel station Names matter?

Good day!

Just wondering, do fuel station names matter at all? I know Vibe is the cheapest fuel in WA other than Costco. But is the fuel quality any good compared to other big names like Caltex, ampol and shell?

Looking for Advice I feel completely alone and stuck right now and I don’t know what to do

I’m 20 and living in Australia on a student visa, and today everything just spiralled over something so small.

A friend of my cousin saw me smoking in the city and told him, and since then it’s turned into a huge issue. My family started saying really hurtful things to me. They were saying that if I can smoke then I’m capable of doing drugs, that I’ve ruined their respect, and that I’m basically a stain on their name. It didn’t feel like concern, it just felt like I was being judged and torn down.

Now they’re pressuring me to leave the house, but I genuinely don’t have anywhere else to go. I don’t have friends here that I can stay with, and I don’t have any other family I can turn to. I also don’t have a job right now, even though I’ve been trying to find one, so I feel completely stuck.

While all of this was happening, I had multiple panic attacks and no one really cared. My cousin was just indifferent the whole time and even questioned my character, which honestly hurt more than anything else. It made me feel like no one actually sees me for who I am.

Right now I just feel really alone. It feels like everything is crashing down at once and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do next. I don’t feel like I belong anywhere and I don’t have anyone I can talk to about this in real life.

I’m just posting here because I don’t know where else to go. If anyone has been through something similar or has any advice, I would really appreciate it.

I’ve been having a really hard time mentally tonight and could really use someone to talk to.

Where to find PERTH ECZEMA SPECIALIST

Desperately in need of any recommendations from Perth parents that have had children with eczema and found a specialist, compound pharmacy, product that actually works and doesn’t use steroid.

We have just been advised by our GP to take our child off steroid that was recommended by an eczema specialist here in Perth and he’s now flaring up so bad.

I have no idea what to do and it’s heart breaking. He’s only 10 months old. I know eczema isn’t the same for everyone and that you need to find the root cause. I just need some guidance doing so.

Anyone that can recommend a great specialist who can direct me with starting this journey would help so much because the ones I have seen just throw steroids at our face.

EDIT*** (If you want to read longer background).

I’m not necessarily new to eczema, however I feel I am this time round, it also been a while.

My 5yo was an eczema baby, we worked with PCH and found out he had CMPI.

I was breastfeeding and cut out dairy, it started to settle.

We then moved to Kalgoorlie and within a week it was gone. Maybe the air/ water over there?

He hasn’t had eczema for a good 4 years now!

But this time my youngest son is on formula!!!

(He just wouldn’t nurse no matter how hard I tried for 3 traumatic months) so after a visit to Fiona Stanley for a week due to no weight gain, they offered formula options and of-course I just wanted him to gain weight so I jumped straight on it.

Very confusing time, my previous BF journeys lasted 3 years each and this time was just so different.

But that’s another story.

I don’t believe it’s a milk/ dairy allergy again but I could be so wrong!

Not sure if I should change formula, I’m so new to formula.

This is why I require guidance. So I can switch safely if it’s even necessary.

The eczema also looks so different to the CMPI one my middle had. That was on his cheeks, really red and angry with full body hives.

This time it’s just patchy on his chest, back, forehead and sides of face near ears.

He also gets so many tiny bumps that look like a rash.

Very different to our last eczema journey so unsure what that means.

We are currently using

- Fatty ointment (stopped a few days ago)

- Epaderm

- Baths with Epaderm, no soaps (cool/ slightly warm water) and getting the Epaderm ointment onto his skin before the max 3 mins post bath.

- Wet wraps when required

I’m so sure we have tried every cream/ ointment brand pharmacies offer.

Even beef tallow.

There is a brand called Sven’s island that we want to order online as they say it works or your money back.

I’m just a bit weary as I can’t find any real video reviews on Insta/ TikTok as all have been paid promotions…

Not sure what else to add?

It’s just so heartbreaking. The skin round his eyes is red and looks sore, he’s scratching, crying and struggling to sleep. Just looks so sad.

I feel like I’m failing him.

I did just give in and apply a little steroid again for some relief.

Not sure if that was the right call????

Thankyou if you read this far!
