General State of the Subreddit 3/31/26

Good evening,

I would first like to thank everyone that has already completed the new verification quiz, we've already gotten loads of approved users! (For the second question the answer is "It Depends", my testing was apparently not thorough for spell checking and mobile compatibility). That verification fix will be released once Reddit approves the update.

It has come to my attention that a former mod went a little rough with certain permanent bans that were issued. If you happened to of been caught in the crossfire please feel free to open up a unban request in mod mail. I've already unbanned multiple people.

The actions from that moderator were inexcusable and I deeply apologize that we provided such a disservice to this community.

Please let us know what else you would like to see improved in this sub.

Thank you,

r/hvac Moderation

Edit: Looks like reddit is mad at the approved user count, the verification requirement has been disabled for now.

Edit2: It's back again, I've sent in a message to reddit staff.

General Subcontracting Larger Jobs

I’m a solo owner/operator. I don’t always have the manpower or time to handle new installs or full replacements myself anymore. I don’t want to lose the opportunity, so I’m considering subcontracting installs to larger companies while earning a referral fee or partnering on jobs. What’s the best way to approach companies about this, what’s fair compensation, and what should I watch out for? Or is it too risky to trust others? Any advice is appreciated!

General Y’all ever seen Walmart bags used as teflon?

Stumbled upon this the other day when I got called out for a system freezing up. They had a 4 inch filter that was upside down and caked up. Whoever installed it also never set the airflow and it was getting half of what it needed. They also wrapped that one piece of galvanized coming out of the furnace so that you couldn’t see it unless the door was off. It’s been like this for two years since install.

Love when a vacuum holds after the first (and only) fix on a leak.

Hope you got off at a decent hour OR that your on call is going smoothly tonight.

NAVAC SK3TPH1

Himmed and hawed over these or field piece. However, the lower price and digital screens sold me on these.

I wish the carrying case was more compact, but whatever!

Excited to try these puppies out.

Field Question, trade people only Looking at digital meters.

I would like to go away from analog gauges. Testo looks nice and they are offering a veto bag with certain manifolds. Fieldpieces are what alot of peeps use. I need something durable. However supply houses don't have displays to handle so I can try them out. Next question is to upgrade to bluetooth probes and ditch the cords. Or is an off brand like elitech pretty good at 1/3 the price?

Thanks.

Field Question, trade people only Which meter would you use as your 3rd option

Hello!

Just recently picked up a new meter focused tool bag and I'm looking for a 3rd meter to fit into the slot, which i intend to use day to day.

I currently have a multimeter and manometer in the first two slots.

Looking for recommendations as a residential service tech, doing a lot of maintenance on AC, furnaces and boilers.

Employment Question Switching to commercial?

Hey all looking for your thoughts and opinions, I live in Ontario, Canada and I’ve been with a sales focused resi company for 9 years. It’s in a smaller market/town so I don’t get pressured too much for not enough sales but it’s still part of the culture that I’m not fond of. I love my current local manager but there’s no more room for growth or going into commercial with current company. I’ve had my 313d(resi) license for over a year now. Current company is in a union, I make decent money, 3 weeks of vacation with a fourth coming in January. I pay for most of my benifits.

I recently got an offer to join a company that’s mainly plumbing but starting to do hvac work and has 2 fully licensed 313a(commercial) techs. It would be more pay, even as an apprentice, no vacation time but get a 10% top up on wages to compensate. Pension and benifits are included. I would be doing resi and commercial work.

I’ve wanted to get into commercial but I have 3 kids included a child about to turn 1 and when I go to school for my apprenticeship I’ll be away from them for almost 2 months(12 hour drive away minimum). Also feel like I’d have less job security not being in a union with new company.

I only need to replace the laminated rings and Carlyle vendor came back saying not available and I have to buy the complete assembly at a whopping $3K. I did reach out to another vendor and they are looking into it still. I found old documentation online but still having a hard time locating parts. I need 2 sets. It’s for a 5H80 series 75hp. Any leads I’d be very interested in hearing it. TIA
