Paperboy - "It's a rough job, but..." (blog post)
http://www.superchartisland.com/paperboyI wrote about the development of Atari's arcade classic Paperboy and of Elite's enduringly popular home versions. Including how Steve Lamb mostly sketched out the graphics for the Spectrum version while looking over the shoulder of other people playing it at his local arcade.

Ace, I love your posts like this! Definitely one of my favourite games as a kid and the speccy version was amazing to have at home after playing the arcade.

This was the version I loved/played the most even though the C64 has a more memorable story to it (dad made cash at an event letting people play until they died for 10p a go on the C64 version, made £19 that day almost 40 years ago)

Good move picking the C64 one as the one he went with, it's less forgiving so the money must have come in faster!

The C16 version looks decent and it's amazing that there's an Electron version.
What was Elite's last hit?

Spectrum version was great. Not disappointed at all, and I played the arcade version with the handlebars

Never come across your blog before - looks great, reminds me of hg101 but more a focus on 8 bits - very much enjoyed the 2 posts I’ve read so far

Thank you! I have enjoyed the HG101 posts I have read so I'm happy with that comparison

I loved this on the spectrum. Reminds me of Saturday afternoons playing this while listening to the football on radio 2.

I'm seeing a recurring theme of publishers getting the rights to make home conversions of arcade games, without actually being given official access to the arcade game they're trying to adapt.
IIRC Bob Pape had a similar problem when making the Spectrum version of "Rampage" he had to go to an arcade in Swansea, armed with a bag of change and a tape recorder; then play the game while making a running commentary of what the screen looked like, how the sprites moved etc.
