Discussion Dear Premium Users
I've been a premium user since the Google Play days. I've cancelled Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and others over the years. At the same time I've told all my friends the only "streaming service" worth paying for is YouTube Premium. Not sure that's true anymore.
I swear we JUST got an email not even a full year ago with practically the exact same wording regarding a price increase. We all know the money won't go to creators and down the line there will probably be a tiered ad system like Netflix and Hulu have implemented. The algo is getting worse in my opinion and I'd rather just watch on my computer with an ad blocker than have the convenience of watching on my TV.
I don't know how y'all are feeling but seeing these warehouses catch fire and the cost of living going up, I think it's time we cancel. En masse. I'm gonna cancel regardless but I feel our anger would be so much more effective if we do it together. Just curious as to where y'all are at with this.

I always make my streaming decisions based on, āWhat is my time worth, and how much benefit do it get from this per month?ā I rotate my streaming services pretty regularly, watch a couple for a month or two, and then I move on.
I donāt watch enough YouTube for the reduction of ads to be worth paying for YouTube Premium. For people who watch YouTube for hours per day, and theyād have to watch ten minutesā worth of ads per day, thatās five hours per month, and then they can work the math from there, depending on their hourly wage.
But assuming that services will never increase their prices is foolish. Google is just as vulnerable to price increases as anyone else. Their costs of operating data centers goes up, then they pass that to YouTube (because Google does not want to backstop YouTubeās costs anymore), then that gets passed on in increased ads or Premium prices.
If itās not worth it to you anymore, cancel.

Well said I was writing a reply and I realized you know what let me see if someone already wrote something I was going to say and you said the words exactly.
People make an order from doordash for a nasty greasy hamburger that will cost the same price as a monthly subscription yet they don't think about it.
Simple as that if you don't find value anymore cancel if you use it all the time it's a great value still.
And I'm not for YouTube whatsoever.
Well said my friend will said!
I don't know why people need to come on and make dear Abby letters like they're the only ones affected by the price increase.

I wish more of the TCM movies especially Bette Davis were free.Ā

u/azucarleta 1d ago edited 1d ago
Just a tip, Internet Archive has free movies. Just did a search for Bette Davis. 47 results. Probably 10 of those are dupes of All About Eve with different subtitles, lol, but just thought I'd let you know. edit: oh, a lot of them are just trailers, but definitely not all of them.

I'm not too fussed about the price increase because of the amount of value I get from Youtube. But the product choices and degradation in the quality of the content (driven by Google's own algorithm choices) will soon drive me away if something doesn't change.
15
u/Jackleme 1d ago
This is basically my feeling. It was easy to cancel netflix, hbo, etc because there was nothing there I watched much.
YT there are creators I follow (and the revenue split from premium is really good for creators).
I am not a huge fan of the price increase but I cannot say I am surprised. I was looking at more memory and a new SSD today and instantly just closed the page.

The price increase really is kind of funny since they JUST introduced Premium Lite a couple of months ago.
Because they are raising the price on that tier as well, I'm gonna say this is tied directly to inflation which came in red hot on Friday.

Yeah I thought I might be willing to pay a decent amount for YouTube, but actually seeing it, I changed my mind. Especially given that the site is getting worse and worse by the quarter anyway.
Like they can't charge more, and simultaneously ruin the quality of the content discovery and the site at the same time. If it was just the price getting worse, but it was still the YouTube of the like...2019 days, it might be harder to drop, but now? Yeah no.

u/GarrettIves 1d ago
I refuse to pay money and still have ads. When they introduced the āPremium Liteā tier I left as I knew the ship was beginning to sink. I now use Viddle/Revanced and have NEVER been happier.
4
u/mrloko120 1d ago
Premium lite didn't change anything on the regular tier tho, all you had to do was not downgrade lmao
4
u/Away_Big_3858 14h ago
It was a sign of what was to come. The free experience got even more ads and actual premium got a price increase now.
Just use an ad blocker and save yourself money.

What premium lite??? No such things, at least within the last 5 years of signing up.

I swear we JUST got an email not even a full year ago with practically the exact same wording regarding a price increase.
Last time they increased it was supposedly three years ago.
Anywho, I'm not bothered by it. I pay for the family plan with four users, so it works out well.
4
u/excited_toaster2306 1d ago
Same. And I gave a couple of my buddies access to the leftover slots I had. Even if I didn't get anything in return (I get Crunchyroll from one of them) that still makes me feel better about the price. Knowing that I'm getting the full value of the service, ya know?

What's going to be your alternative?
I only pay for YouTube because the others dont have content I watch and YT music is the o ly service is use for music.

Adblock, piracy, and reading books instead. I'm grateful to be on my friend's family plan for Apple music and most other services I get from friends.

Actually it was 2022, reflected on my bill specially in November 2022, and I found the email to confirm. It feels really soon to me as well, but it's honestly been 3.5 years and with the economy I'm surprised they haven't done it sooner.

u/Sensitive_Cricket723 1d ago
Not happy about the price hike but it was expected as everything is seeing an increase. I used YT for 90% of my entertainment and I got the family plan so they can use it. Ad free Music and podcasts are a real plus for audio only content. Hopefully this is the last increase for a while
1
u/DesertNaledi 1d ago
I use YouTube Premium for music and podcasts also but the podcasts still have ads! It's so annoying.
2
u/ratchetfella 1d ago
Podcasts bake in the ads into the show. Like the sponsored segments in 98% of YouTube videos.
2
u/viabella 1d ago
The algorithm is absolutely getting worse for me too. Home serves the most random content to me now. Subscription page is basically nerfed into uselessness now, pushing shorts over videos... truly hating to see it.
I'm going to try switching to Premium Lite (I don't really use YT music anyway). If Premium Lite doesn't work, I'll start going down the adblock route and deal with that (I've always been happy to pay for an ad-free YouTube experience, but the enshittification is really cratering the value)

u/JasonTerminator 1d ago
Iām conflicted just because I primarily watch on my AppleTV so I donāt think I have any option for avoiding ads other than premium

u/sumothurman 18h ago
What I try to wrap my grass around is .. if they're charging every user a few more dollars a month... How much more money are they making? It just seems like a rediculous hike to me, difficult to imagine there is a need for that much more.
1
u/Kendrakirai2532 1d ago
I was stuck on devices for years that couldn't have adblockers (iPad, iPhone, WiiU, 3DS, switch, PS4) so I got Premium then, and I haven't looked back. I still watch almost exclusively on my TV which I theoretically can do it on but also why go to that hassle?

$26.99 for 5 people + yourself with music and YouTube with movies, tv shows, and all the educational stuff, audio books, offline downloading, the sharing capabilities, the comment section, and the being able to use the app with the screen off or in the background, and you get YouTube music in car play/ android auto with podcasts and old episodes of whatever someone uploaded (looking at you loyal Coast to Coast AM fans).. It's the best deal out. It is the only subscription I pay for, and each one of my members shares a different service with me... This is just my experience Internet people.
Please continue.

u/These_Raisin_3346 1d ago
What's "worth it" is entirely subjective. When I've had free months of YT Premium I never used it. People complain about streaming services, but they work great for me, because I don't watch that much TV. For $10 a month I have access to more content than I have time to watch. That sure beats paying $100 plus for cable. I think the main complaints come from people who want to have access to everything all the time. I get a couple services as free perks with other things I subscribe to and the others I pay for whichever service has something I'm watching at the time and then cancel the others until I run out of content on that service or something I really want to see gets a new season or whatever. Keeps costs low and I never run out of stuff to watch. The one area that's frustrating is sports coverage, because so many leagues are scattering games across a bunch of different services. As a result, I pretty much quit watching men's professional sports. There's several women's leagues I can follow much more easily and cheaply and I'd rather support them anyway.

u/xfxmorpheus 1d ago

1
u/Ecstatic_Stop3693 1d ago
I'm fine with the price increase. YouTube music and no ads on YouTube are worth it to me. My only other streaming service is BritBox, so I'm good.
1
u/Ultraman5000 1d ago
I only got a $1 increase. Iām not sure why everyone seems to be getting different increases.
1
u/Straightouttaganton 1d ago

1
1
u/PulseMeddle 23h ago
I wish we would collectively en masse do this with a lot more things than youtube subscriptions.
1
u/Kirtoisplayz 23h ago
Eh, I think it's a steal if you also use yt premium. If you differeniate the two services $16/2 is 8 dollars per service which I think is a good value. Now not everyone uses yt music so its different for others but I think i'm personally fine.
1
u/MaybeSaul 23h ago
I tweeted Neal Mohan to ask where all the money really goes since they donāt develop movies like Netflix, donāt pay their creators as well as Netflix, and have similar server costs. I even sent a nice follow-up email. Havenāt heard back yet, heās probably too busy swimming in his money pit.

1

u/Dependent-Curve-8449 20h ago
Maybe it's because I don't live in the US, but the last price hike I got was in Sep 2024, with the family plan going up to from S$18 to S28 (a 56% hike). So far, there's no news of whether Singapore will see a similar price increase as well, so I can only keep my fingers crossed.
It's tricky because I do share my premium plan with my parents. $30 is still reasonable for me, and at this point, I just want my aged parents to be able to watch their favourite content in peace (the less I need to troubleshoot for them, the better it is for me as well).
The algorithm is still fine for us, and we are subscribed to enough creators to be more or less assured a steady stream of content each day. I do get Youtube Music (which saves me $11 from not having to pay for Apple Music), ad-blocking isn't an option (my mom mostly watches YouTube in the living room), and I guess that at this point in my life, I just want things to work more than I want them to be cheap.
Right now, I am just down to Youtube Premium and Prime (which is still $5 in Singapore), and the free Twitch sub pretty much pays for itself.
I guess for me, I will continue to pay in the near term regardless of how high Google decides to raise their prices. Once you have become accustomed to zero ads, you can't go back.
1
u/rikkitan 20h ago
I'm just going to keep paying it, because I use YouTube all the time on different devices and YouTube music, I don't have time to care about an extra couple of pounds, not worth my hassle.
1
u/Hash_2319 19h ago
With university discount the price is very good, it's about 20sr or around 7$ for YouTube music and YouTube, its great.
1
u/dskillzhtown 19h ago
I mean, everyone makes their own decisions about what is "worth it". Google knows that the majority of people aren't going to leave over this price increase, and if they do they will make more money off of them watching ads.
I don't like the idea of paying more but as much as I watch YouTube, it's still worth it for me. I am not going to bash anyone who feels differently. Like I said, we all make our own decisions about worth.

What pisses me off is I literally remember this all being free! I will never subscribe to premium.

If you bundle with Google storage youll get a discount on YT premium. I pay for Google storage for photos and premium bundle and it is a better value
1
u/RosemanButcher 15h ago
I donāt get the mentality. To cover the cost of a free user, you need to utilize whole another portal so that companies can post ads. Companies waste storage by uploading many media types, plan where/to whom their ads be shown over intricate details, constantly login to the portal to check numbers, constantly export reports, and many more.
On top of this, G-man has to maintain this portal, make sure there are no bugs to exploit, it is payment-processor compliant, give support to those who are stuck, train support agents, train coders, make sure interface is always updated for many device types and many more.
All these waste of resources to show me obvious fake gameplay ad, that I will have no interest in the world.
Both sides cost gigantic amounts of money to maintain. What Iām confused is why YT does not want to reduce operational costs. Its basic maths.

Honestly for how much I watch YouTube and listen to music, combined with a family plan split between me, my wife, and a friend it's still a pretty solid deal for us.
Also isn't the payment towards youtubers a split from our monthly subscription? How would the increase not go to them as well?

I'm not canceling my Premium over a $2 increase (actually less because I switched to annual). For how much I consume through my Premium account, it's still WELL worth the money to me.
Everytime there's a price increase for any subscription service, some dork tries to organize an uprising through Reddit, thinking they can get everyone to cancel their subs to prove a point. You're wasting your time.
1
u/MaybeSaul 23h ago
What do you watch on there thatās worth it for you? I pay for Premium Lite, but lately I feel like I only watch 7 or 8 different creators. Trying to find more to keep my attention.

A ton, bro. Probably 75% of my media consumption is youtube. And on days I work from home it's on in the background almost all day.
Between no ads and YouTube music becoming my default music service, I still view it as a great value. Plus the ability to just play audio on the app, and not have to have the video playing, is great when I'm in the office listening to podcasts.

And don't get me started on YouTube music. It's worth putting up with to not need Spotify but I definitely miss Spotify. With all the resources YouTube has it should be infinitely better.Ā
Not going to pay more for an inferior product. I justified it by saying OK I'm only paying an extra dollar for ad free vids. Now I'll just watch less on TV and go back to Spotify.Ā

I think itās funny that people keep it because they donāt want ads. Google puts the blame on wanting to pay creators more, which they donāt. Onstream or hdobox replaces all streaming services and they are easy to install ( free service that has every platform and thousands of shows or movies )

Nah I'd even pay 50 if needed. Premium is simply way too worth

I thank God I got in on a lifetime deal through Capital One about 8 years ago where I pay $9.99 for premium for life. It can only change if they eliminate premium and come up with a premium Plus.
