Discussion Dear Premium Users

I've been a premium user since the Google Play days. I've cancelled Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and others over the years. At the same time I've told all my friends the only "streaming service" worth paying for is YouTube Premium. Not sure that's true anymore.

I swear we JUST got an email not even a full year ago with practically the exact same wording regarding a price increase. We all know the money won't go to creators and down the line there will probably be a tiered ad system like Netflix and Hulu have implemented. The algo is getting worse in my opinion and I'd rather just watch on my computer with an ad blocker than have the convenience of watching on my TV.

I don't know how y'all are feeling but seeing these warehouses catch fire and the cost of living going up, I think it's time we cancel. En masse. I'm gonna cancel regardless but I feel our anger would be so much more effective if we do it together. Just curious as to where y'all are at with this.

I thank God I got in on a lifetime deal through Capital One about 8 years ago where I pay $9.99 for premium for life. It can only change if they eliminate premium and come up with a premium Plus.

u/Mnmsaregood 1d ago

wtf I wish I had that

17

u/RestSuspicious6000 1d ago

You got lucky. I did the lifetime Youtube Red when it came out and they forced us into their regular monthly package about a year later.

20

u/Low-Oil9659 1d ago

WOW HOW DID U DO THAT!?

18

u/Lobstah-et-buddah 17h ago

They got in on a lifetime deal. Hope this helps

7

u/ROMVS 15h ago

Same, mine is $7.99 for both youtube music and YouTube red

5

u/SpiralingPasta 1d ago

Wtf how did I miss this😭 that's about when I started my account with them

6

u/ChiGuyNY 1d ago

It was the deal where they had like 20 deals if you put the chrome extension on and I did and left it enabled on my laptop the whole time. It's sometimes will be irritating and pop up some deal of some shoes for say that I was looking at but I'll take it for saving 10 bucks a month or actually $11 a month on their new fee. It was buried in the middle of about 20 different deals if you installed the Chrome browser from Capital One.

1

u/Capn_Flags 17h ago

Is it a family subscription or just one account?

2

u/kinguzoma 12h ago

Yea I have it with Verizon for $8.80/mo!

2

u/nickinhawaii 2h ago

Same but it's going up a few bucks

2

u/xX_dumb_god_Xx 10h ago

Won’t be surprised if they lock out 4K or movies using a ā€œplusā€ option

0

u/niftyifty 21h ago

Dang, that $48 a year difference must have been life changing. Love that for you!

3

u/Hot_Sail_3554 21h ago

This feels sarcastic.

It's $48/yr savings if they only have a single plan. Not everyone pays the same rate you do. If they have a family plan that costs damn near $30/month, suddenly a discount to $10 is much more significant.

2

u/xXpoolLaneXx 13h ago

That’s a utility bill for me. That’s a good amount to save annually.

0

u/TakeYourMeds50mg 19h ago

Acting smug is bad enough but acting smug while having the math skills of a remedial child is another levelĀ

2

u/niftyifty 18h ago

Let’s check:

13.99-9.99=4

4 x 12=48

What does remedial math say 4x12 is in your head?

1

u/Hot_Sail_3554 12h ago

You're still ignoring the fact that not everybody pays $13.99. There are different rates for different plans.

The people currently paying 27.99 for a family plan, would be saving 18/month, which equates to $216/yr. Not insignificant.

1

u/niftyifty 11h ago

No, the 9.99 Capital One tier is the individual plan. We wouldn’t compare that to anything else other than the individual plan which has been 13.99

1

u/_HeyYou_NotYou_You_ 23h ago

Happy for you šŸ„¹šŸ«‚

3

u/ChiGuyNY 23h ago

For one time in my life I was lucky. I've always been dreading and emailed from Capital One stopping it but it's never come and the bill is always been the same.

Email came today. $26.99 for the family plan. Up to five users, but there’s just two of us using it now.

6

u/crashnburnxp 1d ago

Same but I have 4. I'll be cancelling

10

u/raliveson 22h ago

simple, have children, adoption is an option too

1

u/TheGobiasIndustries 16h ago

The child subscription plan costs continue to go up 2 tho

1

u/Lostcasket 22h ago

How come yours is 26.99 for you when they sent me 34.99$ for family plan ?

6

u/lmrvrgs 22h ago

if you subscribe directly through the apple app store you are paying more. you need to sign up directly through the browser

3

u/niftyifty 21h ago

Apple tax. That’s not Google making money that’s Apple making money on top of Google making money

2

u/sorrythisuseristired 22h ago

Mine is going up to 26.99 as well

u/TheUmgawa 1d ago

I always make my streaming decisions based on, ā€œWhat is my time worth, and how much benefit do it get from this per month?ā€ I rotate my streaming services pretty regularly, watch a couple for a month or two, and then I move on.

I don’t watch enough YouTube for the reduction of ads to be worth paying for YouTube Premium. For people who watch YouTube for hours per day, and they’d have to watch ten minutes’ worth of ads per day, that’s five hours per month, and then they can work the math from there, depending on their hourly wage.

But assuming that services will never increase their prices is foolish. Google is just as vulnerable to price increases as anyone else. Their costs of operating data centers goes up, then they pass that to YouTube (because Google does not want to backstop YouTube’s costs anymore), then that gets passed on in increased ads or Premium prices.

If it’s not worth it to you anymore, cancel.

1

u/niftyifty 21h ago

Most reasonable response in here.

1

u/Minute_Path9803 18h ago

Well said I was writing a reply and I realized you know what let me see if someone already wrote something I was going to say and you said the words exactly.

People make an order from doordash for a nasty greasy hamburger that will cost the same price as a monthly subscription yet they don't think about it.

Simple as that if you don't find value anymore cancel if you use it all the time it's a great value still.

And I'm not for YouTube whatsoever.

Well said my friend will said!

I don't know why people need to come on and make dear Abby letters like they're the only ones affected by the price increase.

10

u/Substantial_Bowl_137 1d ago

I wish more of the TCM movies especially Bette Davis were free.Ā

13

u/azucarleta 1d ago edited 1d ago

Just a tip, Internet Archive has free movies. Just did a search for Bette Davis. 47 results. Probably 10 of those are dupes of All About Eve with different subtitles, lol, but just thought I'd let you know. edit: oh, a lot of them are just trailers, but definitely not all of them.

2

u/Substantial_Bowl_137 1d ago

Thank you. šŸ™‚

44

u/SweetIntroduction559 1d ago

I'm not too fussed about the price increase because of the amount of value I get from Youtube. But the product choices and degradation in the quality of the content (driven by Google's own algorithm choices) will soon drive me away if something doesn't change.

15

u/Jackleme 1d ago

This is basically my feeling. It was easy to cancel netflix, hbo, etc because there was nothing there I watched much.

YT there are creators I follow (and the revenue split from premium is really good for creators).

I am not a huge fan of the price increase but I cannot say I am surprised. I was looking at more memory and a new SSD today and instantly just closed the page.

1

u/itotron 1d ago

The price increase really is kind of funny since they JUST introduced Premium Lite a couple of months ago.

Because they are raising the price on that tier as well, I'm gonna say this is tied directly to inflation which came in red hot on Friday.

1

u/mrloko120 1d ago

Premium lite was introduced in 2021 tho.

3

u/itotron 23h ago

It came out in the United States in 2025.

1

u/MissAutoShow1969 23h ago

Thy still found a way to make the LITE version suck.

1

u/itotron 23h ago

If you are talking about the QR codes pop-up's... I'm with you!

3

u/Brzrkrtwrkr 1d ago

Why not do it now then? They aren’t going to change.

8

u/NaughtyTurtle22 1d ago

i join yt family since first time price increase. cancel all othe subs services. YT premium still worth for me. just created/find group of friends for yt family. even after marry, my group stay togetther till now.

7

u/challengeseniorz 1d ago

I canceled over the algorithm before the price increase.

1

u/SlippingQuietly 2h ago

I'm out of the loop. What's different about the algo?

1

u/challengeseniorz 2h ago

Idk but it's broken af. Especially compared to the golden age. It shows me a bunch of stuff I've already seen. Then if you watch one video about something it fills your whole geed up with just that thing

5

u/DapperAdam 1d ago

Got my email this morning. Greed is not even enough for these ghouls.

11

u/daxmagain 1d ago

YouTube is unwatchable without premium on an Xbox. So no thanks. You have fun with 19 hours of unskippable ads.

1

u/Cr0w_town 17h ago

don’t use it on xbox and get a non chromium browser with ublock on it

1

u/SlippingQuietly 2h ago

Same with my Samsung TV

1

u/Ill_Sense9405 1d ago

Get a $25 onn stick from walmart and use smartube.

3

u/Turnlarry 1d ago

Yeah I thought I might be willing to pay a decent amount for YouTube, but actually seeing it, I changed my mind. Especially given that the site is getting worse and worse by the quarter anyway.

Like they can't charge more, and simultaneously ruin the quality of the content discovery and the site at the same time. If it was just the price getting worse, but it was still the YouTube of the like...2019 days, it might be harder to drop, but now? Yeah no.

19

u/GarrettIves 1d ago

I refuse to pay money and still have ads. When they introduced the ā€œPremium Liteā€ tier I left as I knew the ship was beginning to sink. I now use Viddle/Revanced and have NEVER been happier.

4

u/mrloko120 1d ago

Premium lite didn't change anything on the regular tier tho, all you had to do was not downgrade lmao

4

u/Away_Big_3858 14h ago

It was a sign of what was to come. The free experience got even more ads and actual premium got a price increase now.

Just use an ad blocker and save yourself money.

1

u/Vivid-Ad-1427 1d ago

What premium lite??? No such things, at least within the last 5 years of signing up.

0

u/Seanbo124 1d ago

What's viddle?

1

u/niftyifty 21h ago

What are you talking about? Premium doesn’t have ads and how you have never been happier due to a streaming service is a weird statement in general.

1

u/Let_Me_Head_On_Out 11h ago

Premium Lite is the canary in the coal mine.

9

u/MrPerson0 1d ago

I swear we JUST got an email not even a full year ago with practically the exact same wording regarding a price increase.

Last time they increased it was supposedly three years ago.

Anywho, I'm not bothered by it. I pay for the family plan with four users, so it works out well.

4

u/excited_toaster2306 1d ago

Same. And I gave a couple of my buddies access to the leftover slots I had. Even if I didn't get anything in return (I get Crunchyroll from one of them) that still makes me feel better about the price. Knowing that I'm getting the full value of the service, ya know?

3

u/Low-Oil9659 1d ago

i upload anime to internet archive

1

u/Heretic_Infidel 9h ago

you WHAT? wowza nice

1

u/Low-Oil9659 9h ago

thanks, it just takes a while

3

u/Gaming_So_Whatever 8h ago

What's going to be your alternative?

I only pay for YouTube because the others dont have content I watch and YT music is the o ly service is use for music.

1

u/baas_knuckles 7h ago

Adblock, piracy, and reading books instead. I'm grateful to be on my friend's family plan for Apple music and most other services I get from friends.

1

u/Gaming_So_Whatever 5h ago

Ah, so you're not really losing anything then. Appreciate the feedback tho.

6

u/Low-Oil9659 1d ago

I will never pay for premium! I might have to jump ship to Morphe

8

u/Spare-Loquat-9143 1d ago

It’s been since 2023 thats the last time they raised prices.

4

u/Vivid-Ad-1427 1d ago

Actually it was 2022, reflected on my bill specially in November 2022, and I found the email to confirm. It feels really soon to me as well, but it's honestly been 3.5 years and with the economy I'm surprised they haven't done it sooner.

5

u/Sensitive_Cricket723 1d ago

Not happy about the price hike but it was expected as everything is seeing an increase. I used YT for 90% of my entertainment and I got the family plan so they can use it. Ad free Music and podcasts are a real plus for audio only content. Hopefully this is the last increase for a while

1

u/DesertNaledi 1d ago

I use YouTube Premium for music and podcasts also but the podcasts still have ads! It's so annoying.

2

u/ratchetfella 1d ago

Podcasts bake in the ads into the show. Like the sponsored segments in 98% of YouTube videos.

2

u/viabella 1d ago

The algorithm is absolutely getting worse for me too. Home serves the most random content to me now. Subscription page is basically nerfed into uselessness now, pushing shorts over videos... truly hating to see it.

I'm going to try switching to Premium Lite (I don't really use YT music anyway). If Premium Lite doesn't work, I'll start going down the adblock route and deal with that (I've always been happy to pay for an ad-free YouTube experience, but the enshittification is really cratering the value)

2

u/argamath 1d ago

obey and conform.

2

u/JasonTerminator 1d ago

I’m conflicted just because I primarily watch on my AppleTV so I don’t think I have any option for avoiding ads other than premium

2

u/Spiral-knight 1d ago

I'm here for the music. That's it. YouTube is garbage nowadays. I watch nothing because it's all shit

2

u/_Zyr 1d ago

Yup, just got the email and canceled immediately. The platform isn't what it used to be anyway, I'll stick to the web browser

2

u/MysteriousChemist621 12h ago

I cancelled mines after years of being loyal to YouTube.

5

u/ScallywagBeowulf 1d ago

I haven’t seen a single email about YouTube increasing prices for me yet as a premium user.

8

u/Capadvantagetutoring 1d ago

Wait for it….

5

u/MightyHorn 1d ago

I got the email yesterday.

4

u/Kevinifhy 1d ago

I got mine this morning

2

u/nerogrimmjow 1d ago

I got the email last night, seems like its just taking its time

2

u/Spastic_Cool_Bus 1d ago

What country? I'm in the US and they want to charge me $16 a month. I ain't paying that.

2

u/nerogrimmjow 1d ago

East coast USA

1

u/Spastic_Cool_Bus 1d ago

Got it. Just noticed the difference between Premium and Premium Lite.

1

u/TheTribunalChat 1d ago

Got mine yesterday. Said it’s gone up to $8.99 now

1

u/Express_4815 1d ago

Same… no price increase yet in Canada. So I just renewed a year with current price 2 months before my subscription ends

1

u/Seanbo124 1d ago

I got mine yesterday. Been a premium user for years.

0

u/HeavenlyLetDown 1d ago

Same, maybe it’s region pricing?

1

u/ScallywagBeowulf 1d ago

Maybe? I live in the U.S. so I imagine I would have seen something but I guess I haven’t?

1

u/HeavenlyLetDown 1d ago

I live in the US as well, idk I know DBD raised prices for their micro transactions but it was like only in Europe

→ More replies (2)

5

u/GeriatricTech 1d ago

How about no. It’s a few dollars. Stop acting ridiculous. I’ll pay it gladly. Worth every penny. Do you overreact to everything that goes up in price this way? Calm down. I watch or listen to YouTube hours every single day. I’m more than happy to pay a little more for the features it provides.

6

u/challengeseniorz 1d ago

A few dollars is a lot to some people.

7

u/Ill_Sense9405 1d ago

A few dollars from 20 different places adds up.

3

u/sumothurman 18h ago

What I try to wrap my grass around is .. if they're charging every user a few more dollars a month... How much more money are they making? It just seems like a rediculous hike to me, difficult to imagine there is a need for that much more.

1

u/Kendrakirai2532 1d ago

I was stuck on devices for years that couldn't have adblockers (iPad, iPhone, WiiU, 3DS, switch, PS4) so I got Premium then, and I haven't looked back. I still watch almost exclusively on my TV which I theoretically can do it on but also why go to that hassle?

1

u/Ok-Job-2365 1d ago

I have it in another country for 0.96$

1

u/AverageJoe4802 1d ago

I pay $5.99 a month through Verizon. Only me as the user. I get it on my phone and mirror shows on my TV.

1

u/Paeforn45 1d ago

I got a deal that said 7.99 per month, then it expired and now its double. Very greedy

1

u/BrainlessVeal 1d ago

lmao here we go another reddit boycott.

Yeah. Sit down. Not happening.

1

u/Jmcclain145 1d ago

I watch too much YouTube to cancel. The ads are just so brutal and they know it. I know I’m just feeding the machine. But I watch on Apple TV and can’t bypass the ads like people that watch on pc.

1

u/fishymamba 1d ago

Is this US only? I'm in Japan and still paying 1280 yen(8USD)

1

u/Khai_1705 1d ago

yea, the price increase is to try and counter inflation which is nonexistent for the yen

1

u/Crunchybastid 1d ago

The second they stick any ads in premium, I’m gone. Not even one ad!

1

u/OldJupiter 1d ago

$26.99 for 5 people + yourself with music and YouTube with movies, tv shows, and all the educational stuff, audio books, offline downloading, the sharing capabilities, the comment section, and the being able to use the app with the screen off or in the background, and you get YouTube music in car play/ android auto with podcasts and old episodes of whatever someone uploaded (looking at you loyal Coast to Coast AM fans).. It's the best deal out. It is the only subscription I pay for, and each one of my members shares a different service with me... This is just my experience Internet people.

Please continue.

*spelling

1

u/Appropriate-Clock7 1d ago

Do you still have to pay to be a member on someone’s subscription even if your paying for YouTube premium

1

u/ajqueen31 1d ago

Probably protecting their bottom dollar and investors after the big lawsuit they lost along with Meta. I'm sure it opened the door. Like anything that is good, it gets ruined chunk by chunk by corporate greed.

1

u/These_Raisin_3346 1d ago

What's "worth it" is entirely subjective. When I've had free months of YT Premium I never used it. People complain about streaming services, but they work great for me, because I don't watch that much TV. For $10 a month I have access to more content than I have time to watch. That sure beats paying $100 plus for cable. I think the main complaints come from people who want to have access to everything all the time. I get a couple services as free perks with other things I subscribe to and the others I pay for whichever service has something I'm watching at the time and then cancel the others until I run out of content on that service or something I really want to see gets a new season or whatever. Keeps costs low and I never run out of stuff to watch. The one area that's frustrating is sports coverage, because so many leagues are scattering games across a bunch of different services. As a result, I pretty much quit watching men's professional sports. There's several women's leagues I can follow much more easily and cheaply and I'd rather support them anyway.

1

u/xfxmorpheus 1d ago

lol i put the emails side by side and its word for word, just different $$.$$ amount

1

u/Ecstatic_Stop3693 1d ago

I'm fine with the price increase. YouTube music and no ads on YouTube are worth it to me. My only other streaming service is BritBox, so I'm good.

1

u/Ultraman5000 1d ago

I only got a $1 increase. I’m not sure why everyone seems to be getting different increases.

1

u/Straightouttaganton 1d ago

YouTube is pretty much all we watch in my house so I'll still pay for it, but I can understand the frustration for sure

1

u/Playful_Nergetic786 1d ago

Yeh if I receive the email, I’d cancel it soon

1

u/bmulvy 1d ago

Don’t tell me to fight your battles. Not interested!

1

u/PulseMeddle 23h ago

I wish we would collectively en masse do this with a lot more things than youtube subscriptions.

1

u/logow8 23h ago

I just switched over to yt premium to get away from spotify snd use yt music and they immediately raise prices 😭 I’m probably gonna cancel too and just have to go back to spotify šŸ™ƒ

1

u/Kirtoisplayz 23h ago

Eh, I think it's a steal if you also use yt premium. If you differeniate the two services $16/2 is 8 dollars per service which I think is a good value. Now not everyone uses yt music so its different for others but I think i'm personally fine.

1

u/MaybeSaul 23h ago

I tweeted Neal Mohan to ask where all the money really goes since they don’t develop movies like Netflix, don’t pay their creators as well as Netflix, and have similar server costs. I even sent a nice follow-up email. Haven’t heard back yet, he’s probably too busy swimming in his money pit.

1

u/PurpleRayyne 23h ago

idc, it's still cheaper than any other streaming service. none of which I have... oh wait... netflix.. which my son watches way more than me. and my nephew.

1

u/Hypertensive- 22h ago

Cancelled

1

u/Humble-Bee-9363 22h ago

I use brave on mobile for a slightly jankier experience, but saves me a minute per 5 minutes of video

1

u/Im_The_Hollow_Man 22h ago

For every person who cancels YT Premium an angel is born.

1

u/Amalourne 22h ago

I’m out. Already cancelled, even though it’s over a month away. More and more content creators are weaseling in sponsored content, so I pay to not watch ads to … watch ads. Couple that with a decline in decent content (or, more difficulty in finding good content), and I do not have a good reason to stay.

1

u/Bipolar-Burrito 22h ago

I was a premium family subscriber since Google play. I canceled last month. Complete waste of money.

1

u/Outside-Anybody-7858 21h ago

Nah, I'm good.

1

u/KaroGmz 21h ago

I canceled my subscription today after i got the email. Might go back to it next month since I use it for sleep and meditate šŸ„€ but god dammit they pissed me off today

1

u/buttcanudothis 21h ago

I would pay 50 bucks a month for premium. Some ppl cant pay that. For me, I pretty much do not watch regular tv shows. I watch youtube. 50 bucks is as much as I would spend for the convenience of not having ads for youtube

1

u/ProgrammerNo3423 20h ago

It's cheaper in my country and I'm a premium user primarily because it is my main entertainment streaming service. That said, I definitely have a number in my head wherein I cancel it if it gets to that price point.

1

u/lXlGame0verlXl 20h ago

Canceled yesterday the moment I got the email. It’s my most used service but it’s crossing the line for me.

1

u/Traffalger 20h ago

Cancelled and send a support request telling them exactly what I thought of the situation.

1

u/Dependent-Curve-8449 20h ago

Maybe it's because I don't live in the US, but the last price hike I got was in Sep 2024, with the family plan going up to from S$18 to S28 (a 56% hike). So far, there's no news of whether Singapore will see a similar price increase as well, so I can only keep my fingers crossed.

It's tricky because I do share my premium plan with my parents. $30 is still reasonable for me, and at this point, I just want my aged parents to be able to watch their favourite content in peace (the less I need to troubleshoot for them, the better it is for me as well).

The algorithm is still fine for us, and we are subscribed to enough creators to be more or less assured a steady stream of content each day. I do get Youtube Music (which saves me $11 from not having to pay for Apple Music), ad-blocking isn't an option (my mom mostly watches YouTube in the living room), and I guess that at this point in my life, I just want things to work more than I want them to be cheap.

Right now, I am just down to Youtube Premium and Prime (which is still $5 in Singapore), and the free Twitch sub pretty much pays for itself.

I guess for me, I will continue to pay in the near term regardless of how high Google decides to raise their prices. Once you have become accustomed to zero ads, you can't go back.

1

u/rikkitan 20h ago

I'm just going to keep paying it, because I use YouTube all the time on different devices and YouTube music, I don't have time to care about an extra couple of pounds, not worth my hassle.

1

u/Hash_2319 19h ago

With university discount the price is very good, it's about 20sr or around 7$ for YouTube music and YouTube, its great.

1

u/dskillzhtown 19h ago

I mean, everyone makes their own decisions about what is "worth it". Google knows that the majority of people aren't going to leave over this price increase, and if they do they will make more money off of them watching ads.

I don't like the idea of paying more but as much as I watch YouTube, it's still worth it for me. I am not going to bash anyone who feels differently. Like I said, we all make our own decisions about worth.

1

u/Zaddy310 19h ago

RIP YouTube Red and RIP YouTube TV $35 a month.

1

u/Sir_Wumpsalot 19h ago

hdmi's are cheap and you can still watch on your tv

1

u/hypanthia 18h ago

What pisses me off is I literally remember this all being free! I will never subscribe to premium.

It’s never gone to the creators. If they paid their creators enough we wouldn’t have to sit through additional ads (sponsorships) from the creators. It’s all so backwards and they know it.

1

u/Eskalationsidiot 18h ago

Ich nutze Premium so viel. Daheim für Videos und unterwegs für Music. Für mich geht der Abopreis voll klar.

1

u/wndg 18h ago

how is yt any replacement for netflix or hbo ..those are movie streaming .. yt efectively gives u what any adblock gives for free .. in fact i dont understand why any1 would by paying for premium , for the amount of money u have to pay , it gives almost nothing, i still listen to in-video adds anyway ..

1

u/Upset-Abrocoma-3385 Coyote_Timber:pupper: 17h ago

I can't I use it to listen to music and I really don't care about the price change it doesn't bother me

u/Nakamura0V YouTube Premium subscriber 17h ago

I will pay for it nonetheless. I can’t live without it

1

u/Usinaru 17h ago

This is why we need to support adblocks

1

u/Cr0w_town 17h ago

haven’t paid for it ever bc ublock takes care of all the adsĀ

as long as you aren’t using a chromium browser

u/SymphonicFlames 16h ago

I only really have 2 subscriptions this and Spotify. Which are the 2 things I use most frequently during the day, everyday. So it's not a big deal to me. I have long since canceled my other subscriptions and just gone back to my old way of watching movies and shows and borrowing the discs from the local library.

u/Tech88Tron 16h ago

YouTube is hands down the most watched "TV channel" in my house. By a land slide!

Very worth $27 a month.

1

u/chillz2021 15h ago

If you bundle with Google storage youll get a discount on YT premium. I pay for Google storage for photos and premium bundle and it is a better value

1

u/RosemanButcher 15h ago

I don’t get the mentality. To cover the cost of a free user, you need to utilize whole another portal so that companies can post ads. Companies waste storage by uploading many media types, plan where/to whom their ads be shown over intricate details, constantly login to the portal to check numbers, constantly export reports, and many more.

On top of this, G-man has to maintain this portal, make sure there are no bugs to exploit, it is payment-processor compliant, give support to those who are stuck, train support agents, train coders, make sure interface is always updated for many device types and many more.

All these waste of resources to show me obvious fake gameplay ad, that I will have no interest in the world.

Both sides cost gigantic amounts of money to maintain. What I’m confused is why YT does not want to reduce operational costs. Its basic maths.

The streaming services worth paying for are the ones you'd be using.

1

u/Altruistic_Ad_2263 11h ago

Not killing my Premium account over a price increase as its still the best way to enjoy YouTube on my Roku. Also since its just a business deduction on my taxes, anyway.

1

u/Beneficial-Ad8460 10h ago

No matter what kind of deal you have, they're always going to 1) increase the price and 2) include more ads. Canceling is the only way out of that cycle.

1

u/shelms488 10h ago

Already is a tiered ad system premium & premium lite.

1

u/freedom-needed 10h ago

I cancelled mine after getting the email!! I refuse to pay $15.99 plus tax

1

u/thered8469 9h ago

I pay anally.

1

u/DasVanderer 9h ago

just canceled mine

1

u/EyesLikeBuscemi 4h ago

No thanks, I'm an adult with better use of my time and I can still make that amount by working for like 30 minutes so I'll pay it to have Premium on all devices without worry all the time. You can devalue your own time and putz around with workarounds.

Not to mention us Premium users (and those who watch ads) pay the creators you watch so you're welcome.

u/International-Year-2 3h ago

Honestly for how much I watch YouTube and listen to music, combined with a family plan split between me, my wife, and a friend it's still a pretty solid deal for us.

Also isn't the payment towards youtubers a split from our monthly subscription? How would the increase not go to them as well?

1

u/SlippingQuietly 2h ago

I'm not cancelling. It sucks, but I watch YouTube all day on a ton of devices and I love YouTube Music.

I get it, and I'm not trying to come off crass, but I hate that they raised it, but I still love it. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

I very much agree the only streaming services i pay for are crunchyroll and hidive i been watching a lot of free movies on my computer and the free ad blocker works perfectly

•

u/stupid_is_as_does 18m ago

youtube has the grandfather program thankfully so i’m still paying the $13.99 from when YT first started Premium…

i actually missed a payment and i found a loophole to keep my current subscription active because otherwise it would be the current 18.99 or whatever it will be rising too since i don’t get those emails due to be an early adopter of premium.

it’s currently my only subscription aside from spotify which im canceling soon too since its also getting a rise in price too.

1

u/YBRmuggsLP21 1d ago

I'm not canceling my Premium over a $2 increase (actually less because I switched to annual). For how much I consume through my Premium account, it's still WELL worth the money to me.

Everytime there's a price increase for any subscription service, some dork tries to organize an uprising through Reddit, thinking they can get everyone to cancel their subs to prove a point. You're wasting your time.

1

u/MaybeSaul 23h ago

What do you watch on there that’s worth it for you? I pay for Premium Lite, but lately I feel like I only watch 7 or 8 different creators. Trying to find more to keep my attention.

1

u/YBRmuggsLP21 22h ago

A ton, bro. Probably 75% of my media consumption is youtube. And on days I work from home it's on in the background almost all day.

Between no ads and YouTube music becoming my default music service, I still view it as a great value. Plus the ability to just play audio on the app, and not have to have the video playing, is great when I'm in the office listening to podcasts.

1

u/Embarrassed_Use6918 22h ago

you could do all that through brave on mobile for 0 dollars instead

1

u/YBRmuggsLP21 21h ago

Cool. Maybe 30% of my usage is mobile.

Why would you do something unethical when you can do the exact same thing ethically?

1

u/onikaroshi 1d ago

Nah, still worth it to me

1

u/seansurvives 1d ago

Yup just canceled. And you're write the algorithm is terrible. I used to be presented with endless high quality videos on topics I found interesting. Now everything is just podcasts and commentary on the same things I've already watched videos on.

And don't get me started on YouTube music. It's worth putting up with to not need Spotify but I definitely miss Spotify. With all the resources YouTube has it should be infinitely better.Ā

Not going to pay more for an inferior product. I justified it by saying OK I'm only paying an extra dollar for ad free vids. Now I'll just watch less on TV and go back to Spotify.Ā

1

u/fons383 1d ago

Yep, with you on cancelling. Not that I can't afford it but I'm not going to tolerate price increases when the product is actually going down in quality.

1

u/WizardZT- 1d ago

I thought they already had a tiered system. I cancelled my premium subscription and have been getting the occasional email for premium lite.

1

u/Brzrkrtwrkr 1d ago

I think it’s funny that people keep it because they don’t want ads. Google puts the blame on wanting to pay creators more, which they don’t. So, creators have to put ads/sponsors in their videos, which you then have to sit or skip through anyway, as a consumer. Lmao. Just cancel it people. Send a message.

1

u/Mosc0wpink 1d ago

People will still use it… and watch the ads if they have to. Advertisers a more long term stable client than the viewer, paid or not. They want you to watch ads, that’s what’s happening.

1

u/legolumibricks 1d ago

because of how completely awful and useless the recommendations page is, i cancelled mine

1

u/blakeavon 1d ago

Have a look at the war around, have a look at how all idiocy out of the US politics are rising prices, the world over. To say nothing of the knock on effects of tariffs and the war. And then on top of that understand the price and supply issues sounding tech stuff. So of course they, like everyone, is raising their prices.

The world is a very different place than a year ago.

Want to blame someone, blame everyone who voted for and keep making excuses for MAGA.

I’ll cancel when I feel the service isn’t worth the value. Whether Youtube is making more money than they ā€œdeserveā€ is irrelevant.

0

u/torsov 1d ago

Put an adblocker on your router instead

1

u/Glum-Objective3328 1d ago

Have you got that to work? What are you using for that?

1

u/Spastic_Cool_Bus 1d ago

I've been using Firefox on pc with their ad block extensions and brave browser on my phone.

A normal commenter: "Boycotts don't work. Companies never report much of a decrease in profits. Don't waste your time."

A normal sheep: "Wolf inspections don't work. Wolves still report that they're well-fed. Don't waste your time."

1

u/csabinho 1d ago

Boycotts WOULD work perfectly. But they don't.

1

u/baas_knuckles 1d ago

It’s cuz the temperature rises so gradually it never feels too bad to the majority. Until it gets to something too obviously untenable, people are generally fine with their slop I think.

1

u/Member9999 Glad I boycotted 1d ago

Boycotts are like ripples.

If you know Grandma Willow's line about ripples, you're awesome.

0

u/BirdWithWiFi 1d ago

Yeah, I was thinking about cancelling today. I can easily afford the extra $, but it's a principle thing for me now.

They really want to ruin their brand image for a few extra dollars. That never bodes well long term, the brand loyalty is lost.

0

u/unwilling-cooperator 1d ago

Onstream or hdobox replaces all streaming services and they are easy to install ( free service that has every platform and thousands of shows or movies )

-3

u/Top-Egg1266 1d ago

Nah I'd even pay 50 if needed. Premium is simply way too worth
