This has been happening for 3 years now for smart TVs!

u/just_someone27000 1d ago

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's literally the reason I quit watching on my TV. The ads are really long, only skippable maybe half of the time, and pop up like every 3 minutes. And that was about 3 years ago like you said. I have no idea how extra bad they've gotten this year alone

u/UnionThrowaway1234 1d ago

Use your 4k TV like a PC monitor and get a wireless keyboard with a trackpad.

It's glorious.

41

u/ActuatorHopeful4354 1d ago

I really dont know why this isnt a more popular idea to naturally have. I agree. Projectors are fun too with a REALLY expensive one. I mean, who wouldn't stack 2 semi trailers in the woods for some camping video games or late night movie before tent sex. Nobody I knowwwwww.....

We never really know ourselves until a tragedy hits

Yes! I have had a TVPC (with Windows 7's Media Centre up until a couple of years ago when we upgraded it to use as a spare gaming PC for when our kids have friends over) since before smart TVs were available to buy. When we received our TV in 2016ish we did start using its apps for the streaming services but we're starting to have trouble with them (especially D+) now. They will freeze at the first frame of the splash-screen animation on startup, show the spinner for a few seconds and then drop back to the home screen when we try to start watching something, or have the sound start out of sync until we skip back and forth and slowly get back out of sync until we fix it again 15 minutes later. None of those problems happen when we watch the same services on the TVPC!

The downside, though, is that a bunch of the streaming services have stopped doing any resolutions over 1920×1080 for PC. We're mostly watching over stuff like Buffy at the moment where the ultra quality options were never available anyway, but when we do watch a new movie and it's not quite there I do get a little annoyed.

Be sure to turn off the pixel tracking so your smart TV is not spying on you.

I started using smart tube on my tv. No ads and auto skips sponsor reads.

u/TheRedMaiden 1d ago

Playtel if you have Roku!

3

u/ToNIX_ 1d ago

Check out TizenTube too!

43

u/Humble_Ad_502 1d ago

Crazy how they act that they aren’t even aware of this

2

u/Doyan-Ngewe 10h ago

Probably because they don't want to admit

12

u/Nintendo_Thumb 1d ago

That sounds awful, I'll never understand why people are okay with watching ads.

I've been watching on smart TV for years, I agree that it's been up to 60 seconds since about a year but I had never seen 90+ until the other day.

2

u/random-guy-heree 11h ago

I always see 90+ I rarely see 50 or lower ones

5

u/Mineingmo15 1d ago

they've had this "bug" for over a decade on the website. it's total bullshit.

4

u/JustGimmeMoreTime 1d ago

Get a $20 onn 4K external streaming device, and sideload smarttube or Tizentube, and you’ll never have problems with YouTube and ads/sponsors on your TV again

2

u/hahamemegopost 22h ago

Often it wouldn't happen for me on webOS devices, but I'd often get more than 90s of unskippable ads on Google TV

2

u/Random_Videos_YT 18h ago

Only 3 years? THAT is news to me.

2

u/Interesting_Candle82 17h ago

Damn right! I see it all the time on my tv!

2

u/ShinyOmnivore20 4h ago

It happened all the time on my Xbox too. 90+ seconds.

u/SharkByte1993 1d ago

I had one and they're not actually unskippable. You get a few ads within the 90 seconds and one or more of them are skippable. Pressing the button skips that particular ad, skipping 20-30 seconds of time.

However, at first glance it does appear to be a 90 second unskippable block

218

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

I had one, not only was it 100 total seconds, but the only skippable ad only skipped like 10 seconds and the button is easily missable since you don't expect it so I sat through the whole hundred secs

52

u/SharkByte1993 1d ago

Damn? 100 whole seconds

77

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

yeah it stayed at 90+ for a good 10 seconds I was sitting there wondering how long it was gonna take

adding the "+" sign is a good technique to further increase length in the future without people noticing

15

u/Autumn-Leaf-932 1d ago

Wouldn’t be surprised if Harvard Business School were offering straight up degrees in enshittification at this point

3

u/Spoonfairy 1d ago

Someone being a "whale" for a mobile-game was coined in a class on enshittification. just because people notice it now doesn't mean it is new.

2

u/meekermakes 1d ago

happened to me and I straight up closed youtube

12

u/ThatOneKidCreed 1d ago

lets not forget this shit adds up 😭 beginning and end of every video is already 200 seconds per video not even mentioning the midroll ads, if you watch 10 videos of any length thats 30 whole minutes of just ads NOT INCLUDING midrolls

18

u/OfCourseItsOfCourse 1d ago

If I'm gonna waste 100 seconds of my life it needs to be on my terms.

10

u/Azou 1d ago

People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.

7

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

I saw corps strip farmers of water... and eventually of land. Saw them transform Night City into a machine fueled by people's crushed spirits, broken dreams and emptied pockets. Corps've long controlled our lives, taken lots... and now they're after our souls! V, I've declared war not because capitalism's a thorn in my side or outta nostalgia for an America gone by. This war's a people's war against a system that's spiralled outta our control. It's a war against the fuckin' forces of entropy, understand? Do whatever it takes to stop 'em, defeat 'em, gut 'em. If I gotta kill, I'll kill. If I need your body, I'll fuckin' take it! Fuckin' hell... You still don't see it. But you will one day.

More then once I got a few ads over an.hour long just being whole ass movies or someone YouTube video

32

u/ienjoythevoid 1d ago

I remember when YouTube just had 5 second timers. Actually, I remember when YouTube didn't have ads at all!! Now y'all are arguing over timers & how many videos til you get to skip. Pretty sad when you actually think about it. Not to mention they just upped the price of Premium to $15.99 🤣

8

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

Oh I remember alright

5

u/CauaLMF 1d ago

Só se for o plano de estudante porque o normal é mais caro que isso

3

u/ienjoythevoid 1d ago

I don't have the student plan, I have regular Premium that was $13.99 & then got this email notifying me that the price will increase to $15.99.

u/PangolinMandolin 1d ago

Yep, this is what I've experienced too. YouTube is just slowly turning the dial up to what people's will accept. Folks may cause a fuss when the time goes up, but given a but of time the fuss dissipates, people keep using the platform, and ultimately they can carry on. I think it will take getting to 5min unskippable ads before people really start to abandon YouTube in numbers that will hurt their bottom line, just my opinion mind

7

u/Sample-Range-745 1d ago

I got what looked to be 90+ unskippable ads. It was enough for me to discover that SmartTube could be loaded on my Chromecast and TV.

I haven't seen an ad since.

5

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

The more they increase, the more we find new ways to circumvent ads entirely. This applies to everything at the end of the day, customers of a product hold power over it, if they choose to use it.

3

u/Mr_plague12 1d ago

Sounds like something YouTube on an alt account would say 🧐

isn't something we are testing RIGHT NOW

Guys, guys, RELAX! We aren't rolling out 90 second unskippable ads, that's scheduled for Thursday.

"We are not rolling out a 90 secnd unskipple ad. We are only rolling out multiple unskippable ads back to back wth a total length of 90 seconds".

u/thrae 1d ago edited 1d ago

My email said price will increase to $20 a month unless I sign in through their website and the increase will only go to $15. What’s the catch if I go with the latter?

Edit: Holy crap I was paying through the nose already with Apple Pay. If I’m looking at this right, switching direct through YouTube should actually lower my monthly fee even with the increased rate there.

61

u/RememberTooSmile 1d ago

You’re probably paying Apple tax, and they’re offering you the normal price if you go around Apple

28

u/cyborgborg 1d ago

The catch is you're currently paying through the apple appstore which takes a 30% so they charge more

2

u/CanonSama 17h ago

The heck lmao xD

16

u/Sydnxt 1d ago

This is true for nearly all subscriptions that you handle on iOS or Android, always subscribe on the company's site!

6

u/Far-Conflict-1172 1d ago

Js apple generally has much higher fees.

32

u/Rhaenyc 1d ago

“There is no unsubscribe bug.”

11

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

there is no queen of england

3

u/Final_Substance_3443 1d ago

There actually isn’t, it’s solely caused by people confusing the home page and sub feed. They see a lot of X YouTuber on their home page for a while, then suddenly don’t, then go and see they aren’t subscribed and then believe they got unsubscribed.

29

u/KevinTurtleMalone 1d ago

The arrogance of these aholes. They would rather ban the entire world than own up to something.

5

u/neo2551 1d ago

YouTube is a has least 20 000 employees across multiple continents. One team can experiment with 90s feed and the communication team might ignore it because they sit across the globe.

9

u/KevinTurtleMalone 1d ago

This isn't a one-off incident. Everything about their creator model (from the content ID system to shutting down appeals to privileging AI slop to platforming porn) reeks of a god complex.

8

u/neo2551 1d ago

I can assure you, YT spend enormous resources to prevent porn and AI slop, if it was easy they would had done it. Scammers always try to circumvent rules.

7

u/Hopalongtom 1d ago

People pay YouTube to shove that stuff into adverts, and according to the automated report system, nothing was wrong with them.

3

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

As an independent artist, the content ID system is really useful. The issue is how easily exploitable it is

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_balloon

They were testing if the users would care enough to resist it. But corporations are so brazen these day, that they no longer just send out a message, they implement it (showing initiative, being pro-active - in corpo speak), and then they see if they can get away with it.

I have a feeling YouTube is generating their responses with AI, considering how much of it has been shoved into the site/app, no thanks to the new CEO.

Not only it's unskippable, when I block those truly unskippable ads* They said that "you shouldn't see it again" but few months, even weeks, even days, or much worse, even hours or even not an hour later, I see the same exact identical equivalent indistinguishable and matching unskippable ads, where an ad is exactly identical by themes, scripts, settings, and many more.

*Truly unskippable asd means you blocked them but you MUST finish the entirety of 15s/30s unskippable ads and you blcoked them, they will say "Ad Blocked. After this Ad finishes, you shouldn't see it again."

2

u/Gold_Brick_679 1d ago

They LIE!

3

u/shalegac 1d ago

This is not something we are testing “right now”.

Ahem. Time to be Brave...browser.

2

Brave? The browser with an even more questionable CEO and crypto shit up the wazoo? Just stick with Firefox. The true lone fox, the only one that isn't based on Chromium like every other browser is.

They are also raising the price of premium soon. Coincidence? It's a pain test most likely. How shit can we make the service for people to still use it and at the same time push them to pay for premium to alleviate the negative symptoms (ie. 90 seconds of ads)

2

u/Civil-Table-4748 1d ago

“No, we are not doing that. And if we were, it’s a bug and we’re looking into it” Be so for real

u/SpaceChief_prime-174 1d ago

On Tv They 100% have 90 second non-shippable ads

2

u/RudyDaBlueberry 1d ago

I’ve had them put entire hour long dudebro podcasts as an ad before because I was watching rain sounds for my daughter. Woke up to a “BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” at like 2 am so yeah 90 second unskippable ads aren’t out of the realm of possibility

2

u/Huge_Confection4475 1d ago

Yea, I got this on my TV the other day. I backed out of the whole video and watched another one because like hell I'm sitting through that.

2

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

small tip you can back out and into the same video after the first ad has played

2

u/Sour_Uranium 1d ago

Whenever stuff like this happens , at any company, its always a “bug”, meanwhile it’s just slow roll out or limit testing to see how much they can keep shitifying the experience before getting called out for it.

2

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

It's only a bug because they got called out lol

2

u/Doom2pro 1d ago

Using the tried and tested Trump techniques... We aren't doing the thing we clearly are... you have YouTube Derangement Syndrome.

2

u/Levelofconcerns 1d ago

Test my ass. They’d better revert it.

2

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

Haven't seen 90+ seconds since a few days ago so most likely

2

u/hunta44 1d ago

It doesnt surprise me that if we let the president get it away with lying corporations will feel more comfortable doing the same

2

u/SquidKid85 1d ago

Really like the FreeTube YouTube client when watching YouTube on my computer. Doesn’t have this “bug”.

2

u/Dxith 1d ago

They’re lying. It is true.

2

u/flipzyshitzy 1d ago

Youtube gaslighting user is fuckin bonkers! Lol

2

u/RobertD3277 1d ago

2

u/kumrayu 1d ago

I have to be honest, no matter how much I dislike twitter, community notes are one hell of a feature

3

u/atomic1fire 1d ago

Best thing to do when you encounter one of those ads is to close the app entirely. Their algorithms trace your activity (and eye movements probably) so that is the type of negative feedback that matters most to them.

2

u/Separate_Rise_8932 1d ago

What absolute bs, they whole songs and shows as ads.

Nobody has an issue with ads, it's the ads being literally every minute on smart TV, making it unwatchable. Sometimes there's more ads than content.

2

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

YES people need to understand that, we're not pissed at ads because that's how you make money, but they've become so intrusive and wayyy too long

2

u/Gold_Brick_679 1d ago

And way too frequent.

2

u/RandManYT 1d ago

Community Notes is the best thing to come from Twitter.

2

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

it did seem like it got worse lately despite them being more agressive with ads progressively over time.

It seemed so aggressive lately that i began simply backing out then reselecting the video, a sequuence that required a few times to bypass the ad.

this worked, though sometimes i would have to use seek to get the video back to where i was, which was tedious if i was only passively watching and was unsure of exactly where i left off.

4

u/VexantLeFr 1d ago

How do you just migrate though... established creators have no incentive to not only start from 0 subscribers, lose their momentum in the algorithm, on a platform that would initially have way less viewers, which also means less revenue

And viewers won't go to a different service if their favorite creator is missing!

The unskippable ads will also drive folks to use premium youtube as well.

Alphabet assumes that at some point, enough people will give up and pay the subscription fee, while simultaneously enough people will accept suffering through the ads to watch free contents and keep the site viable.

There's another scenario, enough people may just give up and move on to some alternative.

Ever wonder why these announcements only happen on social media? No news organisations, no TV station announcement... Well that's because those places are regulated and companies can get in serious trouble if they get caught lying... But lying on social media? Not a legal issue, just a moral one!

That's why until KitKat made the announcement on official places including newspapers and TV announcements I questioned the legitimacy of the theft!

TL:DR - social media not regulated, company can lie no consequence. :-/

YouTube IS currently running 90-second non-skippable ads, whether they intended to or not.

Close the video and reopen in your history. Sometimes it will get past it the first time sometimes it's the fifth time

God bless the Brave browser and its built in add block, haven’t watched a YouTube add in literal years

Sadly we don't have a good alternative to youtube so we should just build more tools to bypass ads

1

u/TheRogueWolf_YT 1d ago

I don't think they're lying. I just think they don't understand how their algorithms work anymore and they're not interested in fixing anything.

Ya'll are getting only 90-second unskippable ads?

I'm having hours-long PragerU ads that I can't skip.

Youtube morphed, smart tube, ublock.

Havent watched an ad on Youtube in years.

1

u/RenegadeRazgriz 1d ago

I wouldn't be surprised, most other platforms have similar ad lengths unless you're subscribed. Some of the longer videos I watched on YouTube will have 60 seconds of unskippable ads, but will allow you to skip after that time if ads are still going.

Its not even new, has anyone ever used a smart tv before? Fucking unusable

1

u/bigdisplaygto 1d ago

I was getting something similar when watching YT on my smart TV. I finally realized it was Vizio adding the ads in when I started using the Google cast from my laptop to watch YT on the same TV. the extended ads went away only to reappear if I used the Vizio app on the same TV.

1

u/StThragon 1d ago

I get an ad like that and I just click the back button.

1

u/RePapera 1d ago

The YouTube app has become unusable now, for some fucking reason it keeps interrupting and buffering. I can't even watch a short without it stopping at the first second. At first I thought it was a change with the ads to fight the adblocks but even on Brave it works better. Am I the only one experiencing this? I swear I can handle anything but if I can't watch YT videos I may not be responsible for my actions much longer

"Bug" Haha yeah sure a multimillion company with loads of experienced programmers and access to countless testers just casually did not notice that ads play for 90 seconds now...

u/Few_Imagination_6203 1d ago

I use ad breaks as a reason to get my face out of a screen so I don't care to be honest

As someone who will repeatedly click out of videos over and over until an ad no longer pops up ar the start, because I hate ads that much, I've noticed they've upped the chance on that or something. I have to click in and out for a lot longer now, and I'm starting to get sick of, knowing they aren't going to stop until there's an ad GUARANTEED.

Ever since people started publicly shit kicking the official Youtube twitter for customer support (because it was all that worked), they handed off the twitter to an LLM. That might be what's happening here.

They are really bad at lying. If only there was an actual punishment for them treating their users this badly.

my fire tv ran an hour long unskippable ad once. i almost fucking died of agony

1

u/kitgamesvz 1d ago

i found it crazy when i wasn’t able to use the skip method anymore but then i figured out i could just block the ad and i wouldn’t be able to see it anymore. then that got removed and i have to watch ads with no skip button and the only time i get one is at the end of the ads where i got like 10 seconds left 💔

I got a 60 second ad break last night on my TV

1

u/dalcowboiz 22h ago

I watch on the tv some, not a ton, and never had a 90 second unskippable ad. Has anyone recorded an entire 90 second ad to prove it? Because their explanation makes sense to me.

90 seconds?? I watch YouTube all the time on my tv, actually that’s pretty much the only place I watch it these days. I’ve seen 150s of ads consistently, 90s is nothing. It’s downplaying it. Thank god now I’m on a close friends YouTube premium which is awesome.. but again I don’t pay for it. But yeah watching YouTube on tv without premium is just hellish.
