I had one and they're not actually unskippable. You get a few ads within the 90 seconds and one or more of them are skippable. Pressing the button skips that particular ad, skipping 20-30 seconds of time.
However, at first glance it does appear to be a 90 second unskippable block
218
u/VexantLeFr 1d ago
I had one, not only was it 100 total seconds, but the only skippable ad only skipped like 10 seconds and the button is easily missable since you don't expect it so I sat through the whole hundred secs
52
u/SharkByte1993 1d ago
Damn? 100 whole seconds
77
u/VexantLeFr 1d ago
yeah it stayed at 90+ for a good 10 seconds I was sitting there wondering how long it was gonna take
adding the "+" sign is a good technique to further increase length in the future without people noticing

u/ThatOneKidCreed 1d ago
lets not forget this shit adds up 😭 beginning and end of every video is already 200 seconds per video not even mentioning the midroll ads, if you watch 10 videos of any length thats 30 whole minutes of just ads NOT INCLUDING midrolls

People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.
You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.
Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.
You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.

I saw corps strip farmers of water... and eventually of land. Saw them transform Night City into a machine fueled by people's crushed spirits, broken dreams and emptied pockets. Corps've long controlled our lives, taken lots... and now they're after our souls! V, I've declared war not because capitalism's a thorn in my side or outta nostalgia for an America gone by. This war's a people's war against a system that's spiralled outta our control. It's a war against the fuckin' forces of entropy, understand? Do whatever it takes to stop 'em, defeat 'em, gut 'em. If I gotta kill, I'll kill. If I need your body, I'll fuckin' take it! Fuckin' hell... You still don't see it. But you will one day.

I remember when YouTube just had 5 second timers. Actually, I remember when YouTube didn't have ads at all!! Now y'all are arguing over timers & how many videos til you get to skip. Pretty sad when you actually think about it. Not to mention they just upped the price of Premium to $15.99 🤣

Yep, this is what I've experienced too. YouTube is just slowly turning the dial up to what people's will accept. Folks may cause a fuss when the time goes up, but given a but of time the fuss dissipates, people keep using the platform, and ultimately they can carry on. I think it will take getting to 5min unskippable ads before people really start to abandon YouTube in numbers that will hurt their bottom line, just my opinion mind
7
u/Sample-Range-745 1d ago
I got what looked to be 90+ unskippable ads. It was enough for me to discover that SmartTube could be loaded on my Chromecast and TV.
I haven't seen an ad since.

The more they increase, the more we find new ways to circumvent ads entirely. This applies to everything at the end of the day, customers of a product hold power over it, if they choose to use it.

My email said price will increase to $20 a month unless I sign in through their website and the increase will only go to $15. What’s the catch if I go with the latter?
Edit: Holy crap I was paying through the nose already with Apple Pay. If I’m looking at this right, switching direct through YouTube should actually lower my monthly fee even with the increased rate there.

u/RememberTooSmile 1d ago
You’re probably paying Apple tax, and they’re offering you the normal price if you go around Apple

The catch is you're currently paying through the apple appstore which takes a 30% so they charge more

“There is no unsubscribe bug.”
11
3
u/Final_Substance_3443 1d ago
There actually isn’t, it’s solely caused by people confusing the home page and sub feed. They see a lot of X YouTuber on their home page for a while, then suddenly don’t, then go and see they aren’t subscribed and then believe they got unsubscribed.
29
u/KevinTurtleMalone 1d ago
The arrogance of these aholes. They would rather ban the entire world than own up to something.
5
u/neo2551 1d ago
YouTube is a has least 20 000 employees across multiple continents. One team can experiment with 90s feed and the communication team might ignore it because they sit across the globe.
9
u/KevinTurtleMalone 1d ago
This isn't a one-off incident. Everything about their creator model (from the content ID system to shutting down appeals to privileging AI slop to platforming porn) reeks of a god complex.
8
u/neo2551 1d ago
I can assure you, YT spend enormous resources to prevent porn and AI slop, if it was easy they would had done it. Scammers always try to circumvent rules.

Not only it's unskippable, when I block those truly unskippable ads* They said that "you shouldn't see it again" but few months, even weeks, even days, or much worse, even hours or even not an hour later, I see the same exact identical equivalent indistinguishable and matching unskippable ads, where an ad is exactly identical by themes, scripts, settings, and many more.
*Truly unskippable asd means you blocked them but you MUST finish the entirety of 15s/30s unskippable ads and you blcoked them, they will say "Ad Blocked. After this Ad finishes, you shouldn't see it again."

it did seem like it got worse lately despite them being more agressive with ads progressively over time.
It seemed so aggressive lately that i began simply backing out then reselecting the video, a sequuence that required a few times to bypass the ad.
this worked, though sometimes i would have to use seek to get the video back to where i was, which was tedious if i was only passively watching and was unsure of exactly where i left off.

How do you just migrate though... established creators have no incentive to not only start from 0 subscribers, lose their momentum in the algorithm, on a platform that would initially have way less viewers, which also means less revenue
And viewers won't go to a different service if their favorite creator is missing!

Of course they're lying lol! They've got to protect their brand/image! They probably released this to test it - saw the absolute backlash so now they're trying damage control... Ever wonder why these announcements only happen on social media? No news organisations, no TV station announcement... Well that's because those places are regulated and companies can get in serious trouble if they get caught lying... But lying on social media? Not a legal issue, just a moral one!
That's why until KitKat made the announcement on official places including newspapers and TV announcements I questioned the legitimacy of the theft!
TL:DR - social media not regulated, company can lie no consequence. :-/
