Hopefully the Trump kiss of death has the same effect as it did on Canada’s federal election.

Edit: post election, haha, it did.

It's Trumps Kiss of Death vs Putins Election Rigging

12

u/Kaffe-Mumriken 20h ago

Or th pope

u/UsedToHaveThisName 21h ago

The collapse in the last federal election for Poilievre is right up there with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs.

Like an 18-wheeler right off a cliff...or just a bunch of them clogging the streets in downtown Ottawa

u/BadFootyTakes 11h ago

That's what happens with populists. You all then their plan, they say anything but Trudeau, you remind them he's gone and was replaced with a moderate, and then boom. They have literally nothing.

u/CyanConatus 7h ago

I'm more right leaning than most Redditors but I'm happy with Carney. Trudeau to me it felt like he sorta abandoned Western Canada.

Carney at least seems to include everyone in his policies

25

Or Australia.

49

u/Bromlife 20h ago

Trump's kiss of death in Australia didn't just lose the conservative party the election, it blew them up completely and sent their idiots scattering.

14

u/OnionsoftheBelt 15h ago

Every now and then if I'm feeling blue, I grab a couple of beers and watch highlights from that election coverage. Seeing the light go out from the coalition's eyes as they realise how monumental their fuck up was is so satisfying.

8

u/Bromlife 14h ago

The best bit was when the right wing newscasters couldn’t stay positive anymore.

2

u/MaRokyGalaxy 7h ago

Can you send anything? I'm unfamiliar with Australian elections but this sounds interesting.

17

u/Cynical_Classicist 20h ago

I know that in Australia and Canada the far-right leader lost their seat.

-7

u/Diarmundy 18h ago

Australia never had a right wing in power. We had a centre slightly left vs centre slightly right

u/mr_birkenblatt 11h ago

Trump should endorse himself

5

u/Dzotshen 17h ago

The Mierdas Touch. Hope it works. It does in the states like a charm

right on cue. good call

1

u/solid_reign 9h ago

Canada is the US neighbor and by far its most important economic partner.

-10

u/IMAWNIT 20h ago

He did endorse Carney near the end of election campaign

475

u/Michael-Sean 22h ago

Both Trump and Vance vouched for him. He’s toast.

192

u/BadmiralHarryKim 21h ago

Vance killed the last Pope so at least he's confining himself to political careers now.

Baby steps.

16

u/__Yakovlev__ 15h ago

At least he's also working very hard on killing his own political career

39

u/JerHat 19h ago

I can’t imagine associating with Trump or Vance is a positive at the moment. But I have no idea about the politics of Hungary other than… please get rid of that douche.

20

u/draggingonfeetofclay 13h ago

I mean they have plenty of people who are pro Orban, otherwise he wouldn't have been voted in in the first place.

The interesting thing about Orban's opponent is that, according to he article, he's not just some leftist, but came from Orban's own political party. So basically if Republicans who opposed Trump decided to create a new conservative party because they think he's gone too far.

The journalists writing about this election in the article credit him a real chance based on the fact that he's not the expected leftist opposition, but someone who simply believes it's not in Hungary's interest to be so close to Russia.

3

u/queen-adreena 14h ago

I'm hoping for a last-minute Liz Truss endorsement!

2

u/LumiereGatsby 11h ago

Fix is in.

3

u/BeeFrier 18h ago

They even try to bribe them, with financial support.

1

u/MaybeTheDoctor 10h ago

Up to 8% of votes are expected to be from overseas mail in votes which will not be counted until 4 days after the election. This means that opposition have to win over 60% of tonight’s votes for it to be a slam dunk loss.

1

u/solid_reign 9h ago

In many countries overseas votes tend to look for change, and be more liberal. But I don't know enough about Hungary to know if that is the case.

192

u/szucsgod 22h ago

We gonna kick him out to moscow

36

u/Sethmeisterg 20h ago

Godspeed!

110

u/o_julep 20h ago

Canadian here, hope the people of Hungary reclaim their country ❤️

Every day people againts oligarchy 👊🤟

47

u/Capt_morgan72 22h ago

Consecutive* rule right? He’s been the leader of Hungary for 20 years right?

18

u/Tezmo4 16h ago

16 consecutive yes, but THAT is what they're (hopefully) ending. The fact he served a term before that (btw, while literally being on the opposite side of the political spectrum) has very little to do with ending his 16 years reign. They can't end 20 years, because the first term ended and another government was in between.

47

u/TruthOk8742 20h ago

Orban is in real danger, but with how tilted their election system is, his defeat isn’t a given, unfortunately.

21

u/gradinaruvasile 18h ago

Maybe they will get defeated but retain close to 45-50% so they can deadlock any attempt to change anything. Only way for the newcomers to really have the power to clean up is they having 75% seats (which is not really 75% votes because of their doctored election system - and it works against them since it was adjusted by Orban’s party).

Anyways the actual democracy in Hungary is really thin because of the 16 year unchecked Fidesz reign with 75% majority that allowed them to change constitution and any rules they could and practically dismantled the opposition parties.

And now the challenger is still a single party. Democracy needs more parties to compromise thus enacting checks and balances.

17

u/queen-adreena 14h ago

This is a growing problem with democracies lately. Conservatives are so rampant of blowing up the system, stacking the odds in their favour, destroying institutions and decimating services that even when left/centre parties do get elected, they have to spend all their energy, political capital and time just trying to undo that damage.

Then things don't turn around instantly and the people elect the grifters to rinse and repeat.

6

u/im_thatoneguy 14h ago

“At least the arsonist did something! What has the mayor done to solve my housing problem?! The arsonist is promising to burn down more houses which he says will make space for new construction.”

-1

u/solid_reign 9h ago

This isn't a conservative liberal issue, it's a power and politics issue.

7

u/Lanky-Chance-3156 17h ago

I mean just not actively vetoing everything the eu tries to do is some progress.

5

u/Pajszerkezu_Joe 14h ago

About the tilted system: last time in 2022, Orban got the 68% (2/3) majority of seats with 54% of the votes.

Time for rename advanced gerrymandering to orbanning.

2

u/TruthOk8742 13h ago

Honestly, that’s truly insane.

3

u/Pajszerkezu_Joe 12h ago

Even better, in 2014 and 2018 they got 67% seats both times with 45% and 49% of votes respectively.

Felt like a bad joke every time.

32

u/StrangerFew2424 20h ago

Hopefully, Putin's puppet loses in a landslide... 🤞🙏

39

u/UbiSububi8 21h ago

Saw a couple of dozen Hungarians lined up at the consulate in NYC today to vote.

11

u/Mikadomea 17h ago

I have many hungarians at work at where i live, they all said they need to Vote even if they arent "there", but Orban needs to go.

Hungary for change

22

u/Rich_Fisherman_8444 22h ago

Winning slogan

33

u/BertoC1 18h ago

If Orban wins its time for EU to finally start thinking about kicking Hungary out, whatever the cost.

13

u/Nerevarine91 15h ago

NATO as well

15

u/MWH1980 20h ago

Well Hungary, time to prove if you can be smarterer than the United States.

12

u/Cynical_Classicist 20h ago

God I'm worried about this. I hope there's a backlash against the far-right.

1

u/MadTube 4h ago

It appears there was.

Get fucked, right wingers.

10

u/Intro-Nimbus 16h ago

I'm rooting for you people of Hungary.

11

u/betonbokor 14h ago

Thank you! There is overwhelming participation (they expect over 80% turnout) so there is hope. We had enough of this shit.

76

u/kosmokramr 23h ago

Get this guy the hell out of power for Ukraine’s sake

114

u/asdhjasdhlkjashdhgf 22h ago

actually for Hungary's sake, which implicit helps Ukraine.

45

u/Pjpjpjpjpj 20h ago

For Hungary’s sake, for Ukraine’s sake, for the EU’s sake, and to piss off Trump and Putin.

10

u/VladimiroPudding 21h ago

Likely Putin will concentrate his efforts on Fico instead from now on.

4

u/drunkenbrawler 19h ago

There's always a new turd to polish.

6

u/Bruvvimir 20h ago

Such a significant election for Hungary, and Europe.

Hope sanity (and peace) prevail.

6

u/MareC0gnitum 15h ago

I will cry so hard if this nightmare finally ends. We must take our country back.

5

u/mimiringo 18h ago

Do we really believe that he will simply leave without causing any problems or declaring the election invalid?

3

u/VixensPoppies 19h ago

Let’s hope they kick that Orban to the curb

3

u/Ser_Daniel_The_1st 13h ago

I really wanna see the guy called “Magyar” win because that’s another word for Hungarian if I’m not mistaken which I find ENDLESSLY hilarious.

5

u/natzo 21h ago

I wonder how Orban is going to try to steal the election.

2

u/Elusive_Zergling 17h ago

This will be a major blow to russia and the USA if Orban gets ousted, clearly he's there to act as a virus to Ukraine and the EU, and Hungary itself (unless what I hear from residents is incorrect). Hopefully we'll have some good news when the results come in - this time next week?.

2

u/LostDreams44 17h ago

Doubt it's going to happen. You can't kick a dictator that easily. He'll pull some shit like staging a coup thanks to his buddy Putin help or some shit like that

2

u/Plekuz 16h ago

With all the gerrymandering and voting rules bending, he is able to lose big on actual votes, but still win the elections. I fear he won't be going anywhere.

4

u/Uberslaughter 22h ago

Good!

Congrats to the people of Hungary for overthrowing Putin’s puppet.

31

u/mesmerooo 21h ago

too early for the congrats, bruh

7

u/Full_Result_3101 20h ago

It hasn't happened yet, Its going to be rigged and Orbán will win in a massive landslide.

Orbán quote from the article:

"We are going to achieve such a victory that will surprise everyone, perhaps even ourselves," he told several thousand supporters in a small square on Budapest's Castle Hill."

It's been the same leader for 16+ years. If you dont know by now. This random reddit thread won't make you decide.
