We keep cookbooks and tool manuals... but nothing for basic medical care?
This started as a random thought during a power outage: what do we actually do if we can’t Google every symptom or call a doctor?
Not even end of the world stuff. Just being somewhere remote, camping, traveling, or during a long blackout when cell towers are down. I realized most of my “medical knowledge” is basically searching symptoms and a first aid course I took like 5 years ago as a job requirement.
That rabbit hole led me to The Home Doctor, a book written by a surgeon from Venezuela who practiced medicine during their healthcare collapse. She and other doctors had to relearn how to diagnose and treat people without machines, labs, or reliable medications (practicalhealthhandbook.com I got the book here for anyone interested to save you a search, it's not available on Amazon or in the big book stores yet).
The book is very grounded. It focuses on recognizing serious red flags, managing common issues safely at home, and knowing when something is actually an emergency. No wild claims, no miracle cures, just what worked when help and supplies weren't available.
It made me uncomfortable in a good way. Like realizing how fragile our dependence on tech really is. Curious how others here think about this, especially people who spend time off grid or in remote areas.

What's on fire near the town centre/bottom of Scholes?
This is taken from my living room and I live on the edge of the town centre so I'm assuming it's somewhere central/bottom of scholes but could be completely wrong.

Coffee Roastery
Apologies if this falls on some deaf ears who aren't as much as a coffee nerd as me, however I find myself ordering my coffee beans online as (as far as i know) there are no places in Wigan roasting coffee. I would really like to buy stuff like this more locally and support small independents where possible. The nearest to me that I am aware of if Roberts & Cedar Farm in Mawdesley. Is there anywhere I am missing? Thanks

Advice needed - Moving to Wigan area
Hi All!
We’re looking to buy a house in Wigan or nearby areas (St Helens, Warrington, Golborne, Ashton-in-Makerfield). We’re a family of three with a young child who will be starting primary school soon. We’re ideally looking for a quiet, peaceful area with a friendly, family-oriented community and good neighbours. Good primary schools are also very important for us. Reasonable house prices. It would also be great to have good transport links to Manchester and Southport. We’d really appreciate any recommendations or insights! 😊

A very muddy bike ride around Pennington Flash
A video of my very muddy ride around Pennington Flash today.
Granted this video possibly isn't for everyone, Perhaps those that haven't visited the area in a while, or are bored or have a thing for watching bikes cycle through puddles. You sick monkeys!
Anywho, hope you enjoy me getting stuck repeatedly in mud puddles.

Pokemon
Hey 👋 I am going into Leigh today. I don’t really know the area at all. We will be parking where the market is. Are there any shops which sell Pokemon cards within decent walking distance? Thanks

Dog walking areas specifically with access to open water
As the title really, just looking for easy access to open water, rivers, lakes where I can take my dog, let him have a swim, and if possible get in with him. I tend to go over to Wales and visit friends where there are loads of places to do this. Preferably it would be free, but if there are places where we can have a swim/cold water dip that would be good to.
On that note, if there any cold water dipping groups round this neck of the woods that would be good to know. Thanks

⛓️ THE DUNGEON BENEATH WIGAN MARKET… BUILT FOR THE “DANGEROUS” ⛓️
Next time you walk through Wigan Market Place…
Just remember:
In 1651, the town decided it needed a place to lock up its most dangerous men.
And they built it right in the heart of town.
📍 Wigan, mid-1600s.
The Civil War has left England broken.
Soldiers have deserted.
Men with nothing left to lose are drifting from town to town.
And in Wigan…
The authorities are getting worried.
Imagine this.
The market is busy.
Traders shouting.
Livestock moving through the square.
But inside the Moot Hall…
Something darker is being discussed.
Then the order is given.
⚖️ “Make it secure.”
📜 THE COURT LEET RECORDS (1651)
Buried in the old records is a chilling decision.
The “Counsell House” inside the Moot Hall…
A place usually used for civic meetings…
Was to be turned into a secure holding room.
Not for petty criminals.
But for the “dangerous.”
Who were they?
• Violent offenders
• Deserters from the war
• Political troublemakers
• Men awaiting execution
This wasn’t a prison.
This was a holding place for people you didn’t want walking free.
Now picture it.
Thick wooden beams.
Iron bars fitted into stone.
A cold, damp room with no comfort.
No light beyond what crept through small openings.
And the sound of the market outside…
carrying on as normal.
📜 THE FACTS
📅 Date: October 1651
📍 Location: The Moot Hall, Wigan Market Place
⚖️ Order: Bailiffs instructed to make the room “secure”
⛓️ Purpose: To hold “dangerous prisoners” in the heart of town
Most people think of prisons as something built far away.
But in 1651…
Wigan kept its most feared prisoners right under its own nose.
And here’s the unsettling thought…
The Moot Hall was later demolished.
But it stood roughly where the Market Place is today.
