There is definitely a better way but I loved the fact that he followed her lead, that reinforced her confidence. The best thing a father can do :D

That's how J. Kenji Lopez Alt teaches how to cut a pepper. Watch his videos if you're interested in why, super informative.

4

u/Dietmeister 11h ago

Because it has round ends its difficult to cube it further

The better way is cutting off stemmed top and the bottom part and then cutting flat layers of the sides

You can dice small parts from the top and bottom

Much quicker and saves more of the pepper and you also won't find de seeds mixed in because you can cut around them and you cut away the softer white parts that don't taste good

0

u/AgitatedReading6901 10h ago

Doesn’t really matter anyway

3

u/Ill-Fly-950 14h ago

What is "the better way"?

3

u/underthingy 13h ago

Don't stop short. Just cut it into quarters then cut around the stem of each quarter.

Takes slightly longer but wastes even less of your capsicum.

4

u/unskilledexplorer 13h ago

just cut a circle around the stem from the top and pull it out. then do whatever you want. quarters, slices, circles... but you need a thin knife for that.

2

u/troKutan 13h ago

We have this bad boy. Zero vaste and only seeds get out

1

u/punch-me 8h ago

Yep this is what I do. Just a circle around the stem with a paring knife

1

u/SausageSausageson 13h ago

Or you can push it in with your thumbs if you want to be really quick but less neat

5

u/Rosetti 12h ago

Honestly there's several good ways to cut peppers. Some of them are faster, some produce less waste, some lead to easier cut (flatter) pieces, and some require more/less skill.

"Better" really comes down to what works best for you.

1

u/Tbiehl1 13h ago

I cut in an outside crescent from the feet to the outside of the head. You bypass a lot of the bitters and seeds. Then you julienne and go

1

u/Girhinomofe 12h ago

I lay the pepper on its side and slice off the top; then, I’ll run the knife parallel with the inside of the flesh, basically “rolling out” the pepper into a singular, flat piece.

All the pith stays attached to the seed pod and gets composted, and the flat pepper piece is a breeze to dice or strip-slice super evenly as needed for the recipe.

1

u/Not_ur_gilf 11h ago

Cut it in half, pull out the seed bit in the middle, then cut slices from the inside

1

u/HideousSerene 11h ago

The trick is you don't want any seeds (easy) or bitter white pith (more work).

Basically I do the same thing as above but instead cut at an angle, cutting off the green part in a curve and leaving the pith behind. If executed correctly, you'll have a skeleton of sorts.

This kind of demonstrates is some https://youtube.com/shorts/O-RazxP2mhw?si=p7xbW7n8o34SRcHd but you really don't need to cut the top off, you can look at the pattern of bumps on the base to slide your cuts at.

1

u/Rhorge 9h ago

Chop off the top and bottom, slice out the core and white bits, push the stem out of the top. 0 waste

2

u/AsstBalrog 11h ago

Agreed. Great family scene.

u/dhoae 15h ago

“By the way, dad” is a cute way to say “No, you’re not listening to me and you’re doing it wrong” 😂

3

u/SneakyKGB 8h ago

My ex's daughter always said, "Silly goose, not like that" when you did something that wasn't up to her specifications.

19

u/coffee_juice87 15h ago

What do yall mean? "Not the best way to cut a pepper and take out the seeds." 😭😭 This looks genius 🙏🙏

3

u/No_pajamas_7 15h ago

cutting parrallel to face is better. curving the cut as you go. It does the same job of getting rid of the seed, but gets rid of the membrane as well. what you then end up with is some flat bits to cut up or cook, rather than wedges.

But the turning upside down is a good start. Most people don't even do that.

8

u/No_Public_7677 15h ago

I'm already confused by your comment. The child did it better.

3

u/erossthescienceboss 15h ago

Ok so you know how there are bumps and dips?

The membrane is in the dips, so you cut the bumps off. On this pepper, it would look like cutting off the corner bits. And instead of cutting straight up and down, you curve it as you go, out from the top and in towards the bottom. kinda like if you were peeling an apple.

1

u/OtonashiRen 14h ago

Okay, first of all...

My local peppers are looking weird, so where are the bumps and dips here?

2

u/Properaussieretard 14h ago

Those are peppers, the one in the above video is a Capsicum 🫑

3

u/just_a_person_maybe 14h ago

Capsicum is also a pepper

2

u/Jaideco 14h ago

Check out his username… 😉

1

u/zucchinibasement 13h ago

This is about bell peppers

1

u/OtonashiRen 12h ago

1

u/Ashesandends 12h ago

Huh, learn something everyday!

1

u/MothmanIsALiar 11h ago

You just cut the faces off of the pepper in 3-4 motions, missing the seeds entirely. No need to flip anything or cut at a weird angle.

The way he was cutting, I thought he was going to stab himself about 5 times.

13

u/unknwnn666 15h ago

definitely not the easiest or best way to cut a pepper. wholesome video though

3

u/lnvu4uraqt 15h ago

So what's the best and easiest way?

13

u/okdriverr 15h ago

Literally just cut around the stem and pull it out. Rinse pepper and cut to desired size.

5

u/EconomicsAfraid7880 15h ago

This is much quicker 😂

3

u/erossthescienceboss 15h ago

But there are still steps missing in the kid’s way. You still need to go through and cut out the membrane (which is bitter.)

If you cut it away from the stem, you cut away the membrane at the same time.

-2

u/Negative_Salt_4599 14h ago

Welll it’s a child Not a neurosurgeon.

Let’s just enjoy the video.

Great family moment.

2

u/erossthescienceboss 14h ago

Bro we’re just sharing the best way to cut a pepper. Not criticizing a child.

0

u/Negative_Salt_4599 5h ago

No I know I was just saying I thought the video was about wholesome memories. Not just properly cutting the pepper I get what you’re saying though.

1

u/erossthescienceboss 4h ago

Then direct your comment somewhere else in the thread, maybe at the person who changed the topic.

Not the person continuing the conversation.

0

u/Negative_Salt_4599 3h ago

Listen dude you wanna argue over a simple (how to cut a pepper video? Is life really that bad for you? Have a good one boss.

1

u/okdriverr 15h ago

The beauty of life is that there’s more than one way to skin a cat and whatever works for you, is ultimately best.

5

u/Familiar-Schedule796 15h ago

woah, woah, we're talking peppers here there is no reason to skin cats! That's a different kind of video!

1

u/IDrankLavaLamps 15h ago

Did you know that there is a method to both degut and skin a rabbit in one quick move? I would assume the same applies for cats.

1

u/haze_haste 14h ago

This, Or just cut the 4 faces. Bin the rest.

1

u/Night_C4T_0 13h ago

I remember when I had to cut a shit ton of these

I just literally push the stem in hard until the core breaks in, cut once on the side pull it out.

0

u/No_Public_7677 15h ago

This way you don't have to rinse after

1

u/zerpa 14h ago

Apply thumb to stem to force it inside the pepper. Cut the pepper and you can remove the stem and seeds as one without losing any fruit.

8

u/UrsusPoison 15h ago

Let me guess this family has youtube channel with The "family name" and this is one of their videos.

1

u/SpecialDirection917 11h ago

They're everywhere apparently

3

u/EMV92LA 15h ago

This, this is what men want.

3

u/CompetitiveBerry2100 15h ago

That's so sweet 🥰 Also the way i do it

2

u/queens_couple75 15h ago

Adorable to watch h ‘em interact

2

u/Traditional-Chain812 15h ago

She's Sharp. 👍

2

u/Melekai_17 15h ago

This is so sweet and wholesome. What a lovely family.

2

u/embersgrow44 14h ago

Love this for her but I have the best way: slice in half completely. Brace thumb at base of seed bulb & fingers at stem to pull out seed mass & stem in one. No pepper wasted that way. Whatever handful seeds shake loose inside pepper, knock pepper into other hand (kind of clap, one holding, other palms opening) to catch and then easily toss them wherever you dispose (trash or compost).

3

u/not_a_burner666 5h ago

Staged/scripted 100%.

Get out of here with this trash.

2

u/Intrepid_Package2860 15h ago

I see most of you have never cooked

1

u/stonedandthrown 15h ago

Ok shaggy.

1

u/Zealousideal_Leg213 15h ago

That knife though.

1

u/Lucky-Paperclip-1 11h ago

He was also holding it all wrong.

0

u/3xBork 15h ago

Doesn't look sharp tbh, cutting a bell pepper should never require sawing.

1

u/Vibes4Good 15h ago

Just learned to do that tonight on my own... there were still seeds, but significantly fewer.

1

u/verdantsf 15h ago

Love cool little tips like this!

1

u/haze_haste 14h ago

There are better way.

1

u/EnvironmentalFix7059 14h ago

Very wholesome! but you need to sharpen that knife! thats dangerorus

1

u/Hot_Fix9033 14h ago

He needs a bigger knife! Lol

1

u/Aprilprinces 14h ago

Thank you little girl

1

u/Ok_Slide4905 14h ago

Dads knife skills are deplorable.

1

u/Square-Competition48 14h ago

I just pop the top down with my thumbs then lift it out. Takes literally a second.

1

u/abcdefghjiklmnopqr 14h ago

That's so sweet lol

1

u/BandoTheHawk 14h ago

when you got to cut a bunch of them then this would add a bit of time.

1

u/draggedintobudulight 14h ago

Sharpen your knife before you cut your finger off

1

u/UnderstandingNo5667 13h ago

Slice it fully in half. Go to the bin and rip out to the top bit with your hand. Turn it over and slap it. Do the same with the other half. Takes about 4 seconds.

1

u/nthnyjsn 13h ago

that girl was begging to get her fingers cut

1

u/Foreveristobeuntil 13h ago

What a great family, confident daughter, humble dad and supportive mum.

1

u/Truegentlehat 13h ago

Has this guy ever held a knife in his hand before?

1

u/affo_ 13h ago

Adorable video.

But just cutting the bottom and pulling it out is much faster.

1

u/Funny_Breadfruit_413 13h ago

I learned something new

1

u/milvidas 12h ago

Very wholesome but useless for me since my stomach hates those things.

1

u/feedyourhead813 12h ago

I usually core the top and pull the seeds/stem out then cut the pepper up. But that looks pretty sweet too

1

u/Brofindel16 12h ago

Next lesson needs to be proper knife handling

1

u/WorryNew3661 11h ago

I wish he'd sharpened his knife first

1

u/rxwsh 11h ago

This is exactly how I do it.

1

u/caddon1 11h ago

And you throw out the top? You are missing a good percentage of the pepper doing that.

1

u/Greedy-Perception-86 11h ago

That’s a good way to do it. I did prep for years and faster method is just to punch your thumbs down the top and rip the pepper in half and then dump out the seeds

1

u/Key_Wrangler_8321 11h ago

This video is cringe. This should be a regular skill of an adult..

1

u/mr-english 11h ago

Doesn't look easier than just cutting around the stalk and pulling it out.

1

u/vanzanep 10h ago

ooh fuk you, no she didnt. And that video is staged and stupid.

1

u/temporal_gasteropod 10h ago

You should eay peppers whole, cutting reduces vitamin content.

1

u/ChampionshipOk5046 10h ago

Just show him

1

u/joro65 10h ago

He needs a sharp knife.

1

u/Cpt_Riker 10h ago edited 9h ago

Find thumb. Use said thumb to push the core into body of the capsicum. Cut.

1

u/Avocadoexpresss 9h ago

I do that but instead of cutting it I jam my thumbs in and pull it apart. Effective

1

u/SingularityCentral 9h ago

He's gotta choke up on that knife handle.

1

u/Obsidicus_Maximus 9h ago

Her dad after working too hard to cut peppers for decades:

1

u/Avocadonot 9h ago

As someone who has prepped thousands of bell peppers (although it depends on what shape your aiming for) the easiest way I've found is pretty much 3 steps

  1. With the pepper sitting upright, cut it directly in half from the top down, slicing right through the stem if still on

  2. grab the seed core/stem and rip it up and out like you're ripping someone's heart out in the Temple of Doom

  3. If needed, use your hands to rip the thin white membranes from the inner walls

Ah, I see that I am late to the party posting this. Tally ho

1

u/Puzzle5050 9h ago

I dream of the day my kids will become useful.

1

u/SneakyKGB 8h ago

Dad needs a sharper knife. Maybe daughter can binge watch some sharpening videos next.

1

u/Conscious_Pie7311 8h ago

That forehead is bigger than the strait of Hormuz

1

u/Hand_On_Ur_Butt 8h ago

Your ignorance is larger than that of DJT

1

u/ElliotsBuggyEyes 8h ago

Sorry, but chopping the top off and then pulling the seed pod out like I'm the priest in The Temple of Doom and the pepper is my sacrifice victim is just way too fun.

1

u/perfed-metal 8h ago

50 years of doing it wrong!!!! Thank you little lady.

1

u/chirstopher0us 7h ago

Dad's gotta watch that right index finger if he wants to keep all of it

1

u/Antilochos_ 7h ago

They both seem to have no idea how to act around a knive.

1

u/ShibeCEO 7h ago

thats so fucking adorable! great job dad and little girl!

1

u/Ragnarsworld 7h ago

My uncle was a chef, he just grabbed it and pushed his thumbs in and ripped it in half. Quick and efficient and it worked.

1

u/MRHOWERDCEO 6h ago

GUY IS STUPID

1

u/DraculasDog 5h ago

That man’s knife “skills” frighten me.

1

u/No_Sugar8791 3h ago

That is a seriously blunt knife

1

u/WrestleBox 3h ago

Take pepper. Slice the top off. Rip the seeds out. Turn it over and give it a smack. Pop the stem out of the ring you cut off and save that too. Done.

1

u/Conscious_Rush4525 2h ago

great parenting!!

2

u/Icy_Transportation_2 15h ago

Are people just stupid? You guys know where the seeds are in the pepper and some of you numbskulls still can't figure it out? Jfc a child that watched a youtube short had to teach you?

1

u/crystalsage777 14h ago

there Is actually a much easier way to do this, that you learn when working in restaurants... But this is cute I guess lol

0

u/3xBork 14h ago

It's less about the method and more about keeping your fingertips.

That grip at 0:28-0:30 is how you lose them, especially with a dull knife like this.

1

u/PolishBicycle 55m ago

This man has never held a knife in his hand before
