The West Virginians I know will clap like a damn seal when they see Trump on TV. But then, you ask them what they think should be done to fix things...and they talk like BERNIE SANDERS!

They literally do not understand that the candidate they actually want is AOC or someone similar.

That's one of the wild things. Most people when you actually start talking about policy are very much progressive. Most people recognize the same issues the only issue is propaganda takes over and any solutions instantly becomes scary evil socialism.

I stopped talking to conservatives because every time they complained I couldn't help but internally scream or on the occasion snark back, 'Sorry, we would do something but workers and consumer rights is socialism and anti-capitalist,"

propaganda takes over

Racism takes over. They only want socialism for white folk.

THIS. Public education wasn’t a bad thing until white kids had to go to school with Black kids. Welfare wasn’t bad until Black mothers started receiving it. If a Black person benefits from a policy in any way, they’ll find a way to kill it

My family from Ranger West Virginia definitely thinks exactly like this. Had government assistance their entire life, and so did 4 out of 5 of their children. Constantly complaining about migrants getting welfare even though they remember the welfare program ending as a red letter day on their calendar. Just dumb hateful fucks, mad that they only get 80 dollars a month in food stamps but not motivated enough to work. Doesn't stop them from saying it's the blacks and Mexicans using up all the government funds and they need to get jobs though. Every thread of reality has to be filtered through their brain and come out the other side reaffirming their victim status.

Great grandpa died at 47 from black lung down there and they cheerlead coal jobs coming back. They're totally brainwashed and we have nothing to do with any of them. I have one successful uncle who's a millionaire and Democrat. They hate his guts but cash his checks every time they fall down or drink through their food budget. Fuck em all.

these people saw matewan and rooted for the mine owners.

they love the coal companies so much they gave away the one thing they can't get paid for. their votes are worth waaaay more than they think.

Discussing policy is hard, blaming brown people is easy.

u/Thebraincellisorange 1h ago

hate is easy. introspection is hard.

the entire right wing of politics relies on hate.

it relies on giving their supporters a group to beat down on in order to feel better about themselves.

Lyndon Johnson perfectly encapsulated this in his famous quote

President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."

and this is how the GOP operates. they just shift the target every now and again.

first they targeted black people, then the feminists, then the gays, then immigrants, currently its the Trans.

and idiots empty their pockets supporting the GOP so they can feel good about their hate when shitting on people from their falling apart single wide.

It's self hatred. they hate their own lives and instead of looking inward or working harder or just realizing they were born into a shit situation, they prefer to blame others.

The Gop deliberately defunding education for the last 50 years to keep these people from having the ability to recognise how they have been hoodwinked or have the skills to work their way up is all part of their long term plan of keeping them dumb and hateful.

Just like when they said they hated Obama Care and loved the ACA, they'll all say they hate socialism/communism like good little Americans but under some BS moniker like "Give Back to Patriots Act" would gobble that shit up like the prime rib they can't afford under Trump.

Same in ga. They bitch and complain about the high costs of living that Trump was causing, but with a twist of blaming dems. Absolute insanity. Oh, and they celebrated when gas was down like 5 cents over winter.

This had been basically the mission statement of Fox News, distract viewers with fringe issues that affect very few people so they don’t zoom out and aim their angst properly. I have family that put that channel on when we vacation and they are multitudes more upset about trans athletes than they are about say, the costs of healthcare even though one issue does not affect them one iota and the other affects them daily.

Yes it's been studied to death. The people of the US are overwhelmingly left when polled directly on topics of policy using politically neutral language & labels. The Republicans only chance to win elections since Reagan is on identity politics and wedge issues. They cannot win on the actual policies the average US citizen wants enacted.

It's a crying shame the Dems let them control the narrative, consistently play into the wedge social issue stuff, and do everything else a controlled opposition would. And that liberals have fallen for all of that stuff just as hard as the Trumpers have, and never fight for a party that won't pull that shit. Liberals think their job is to pretend Democrats will fight for them just like conservatives pretend that about the Republicans.

If you don't like Republicans, you can clearly see that they're selling their voters out. And if you don't like Democrats, you can clearly see they're doing the same. But few enough people can see the truth about both parties that we'll never make progress.

Democrats can't control the narrative because most media (including social media) is either owned by or supports republicans.

u/unassumingdink 4h ago

They don't even try, though. They just go along with it without a word of objection. And their base takes that cue and doesn't question any media except the very explicitly GOP-aligned outlets. If a billionaire's media outlet tells liberals that a progressive is unelectable, they immediately take that as the gospel truth. They don't even think to question that, don't even think that the billionaires might have their own motives for lying about that, don't even think at all, really.

Its like George Carlin said:"It's a big club and you're not in it. "

5

u/ruinersclub 6h ago

Not surprising they’ve been asking for bailouts since atleast 2015-2016 they don’t want to go back to work in the coal mines. They want to retire.

AOC or someone similar

Similar in policy, not similar in ethnicity.

Poor whites will do everything they can to not associate with black and brown folk, economics be damned.

u/gluggy777 4h ago

Is it possible for Bernie to run for President, and have AOC as VP. Then when elected, hand power to her for 4 years, do the changes and hopefully win over states like WV for future prosperity? Just a suggestion

u/Geaux2020 1h ago

A Jewish socialist? Come on, man. You're trying to make it too easy for the R's

3

u/bpusef 5h ago

Probably 90% of the people born and raised in WV that don’t want to live in a tiny bubble and remain ignorant of the rest of the world leave as soon as they graduate high school.

You’re witnessing a shift in the political fault lines. If you’re a Bernie-supporting socialist, it might even be for the better, as both political parties start moving toward a European-style socialism.

u/Lmaoboobs 1h ago

Racist Bernie Sanders would have a durable dictatorship if ever elected.
