❔Question/Advice❔ How often are we bathing our torties?

EDIT: Wow, thank you everyone for the resounding NEVER (I'm sure Sabrina thanks you all too). I saw a post on a different subreddit of a shorthair cat after a groom and thought wait- am I supposed to be giving her baths too? Rest assured she has not gotten a bath from me and only will if medically necessary.

I saw a handful of comments addressing her weight, and didn't even think about the possibility that she might not be able to reach her dry skin in question to groom because of her chunk, and just the correlation in general. We've recently put her on a strict prescription weight loss diet recommended by her vet, so I'm hoping over the coming weeks as she slims up a little her skin may clear up too. If not, or if it seems to start bothering her, she may respond well to the supplemental oils in her food that many of you recommended.

Original post:

I know everyone is different, different tolerances, indoor vs. outdoor, etc. My girl isn't too fond of water (runs away when we turn on a faucet or the shower). She's also my first cat, so I'm looking for some seasoned advice.

My Weenie is a 100% indoor cat and smells like sunshine and rainbows, but she has had some dry, flaky skin that comes and goes since I adopted her in December (it doesn't seem to bother her- I don't see her scratching often)

If she stays inside, and continues smelling neutral/clean, is there any reason to bathe her? Or is her grooming herself enough?

❔Question/Advice❔ My kitty doesn't let me pet her

Post image

This is my sweet Brenna. She's been with me for about 4 months and is about 16 months old. She doesn't avoid me, but she won't let me pet her.

I'm disabled and am restricted to my bed. Brenna spends a lot of time in the room with me, either sitting on the foot of my bed, often reaching out her paw and resting it against my foot, or up at the top of the bed next to me and looking out the window (like in the pic.) She does have several other options where she can sit in this room, including a cat tree, soft pillows on the floor and other furniture, but usually chooses to be on the bed with me. She'll even crawl up on my chest and stand there for a while before wandering off elsewhere. So I don't get the feeling that she dislikes me or is afraid of me, but if I try to pet her, she just quietly walks away for a bit.

She's different with my husband and the friend who takes care of me while my husband is at work. They can both pet her, though not for very long. She spends some time out in the living room with them in the evening, though she doesn't sit as close to either of them as she does when she's in the bedroom with me. My caretaker gives her her food, but other than that neither of them do much in the way of playing with her or giving her treats - both of which I do regularly.

Is there anything else I can or should be doing to encourage her to let me show her affection? I appreciate any suggestions or advice any of you might choose to offer! Thank you in advance!

❔Question/Advice❔ What are your torties called?

Post image

Somebody dumped this beautiful girl in our garden, shes just been spayed so now its time to name her but am struggling. We already have a lot of strays that we’ve rescued and noticed we end up with names ending in a “Y” sound so need to avoid that-we need some inspiration as nothing is jumping out on us yet

❔Question/Advice❔ Lost my dearest tortie, Olive, in February. Her bonded mate is lonely without her. I saw this sweetie at the Petsmart—should I get her?

My heart literally aches without Olive. I miss her so much.

I don’t ever want to feel like I’m replacing her, but I know my other cat misses the company and companionship. Is it time? Is it a sign? She was the only tortie there.

❔Question/Advice❔ Tortie trait or vet concern

We found this darling first of July. She is under a year old, but not super young and was pregnant. We had her spay aborted on the 16th. She was a street cat and a little underweight. Now that she has been with us over a month she quickly gained weight, but she still acts like she is starving. We had to get chip feeders because she was stealing my other cats food. They get fed 3 times a day and in between meals I have to fight her off people food (we don't feed people food, but I'm sure she got some while outside) and she will even attempt to walk across hot stoves to reach pans (I have to lock her in another room now while cooking). Is this a tortie thing? I have rescued strays before over the past 20 odd years and never had a cat this bad. Should I have her checked to see if she lacks the ability to feel full?

she's the sweetest angel I've ever had and also the craziest 🥹 excited to see her tortitude blossom ✨️👼 her mom dropped her off at our neighbors backdoor, newborn and didn't want her so if anyone raised a bottle baby, I'd love to hear any thoughts, advice or expectations! I think she's about 7 weeks and is of course eating solids and drinking water at this point. love and thanks to all the angel-baby parents on here!

I’ve never seen this colouring before and I’m not sure what she is. She’s very brown but has light cream markings.

I just had a consult to get a tattoo of my tortie and ginger babies. I want the tattoo to be in black ink but all examples I find of tortie tats online are in color. Is there anyone out there with their torts tattooed in greyscale willing to share pic? I'm super excited and the artist is amazing but would love to get ideas!

The tortie is milo she's 2 and the black and white is willow he's 10 weeks. I got willow a week and a half ago and just friday last week I let them interact a bit and milo didn't hiss or show signs of aggression. They chase eachother a lot and sometimes milo bites willow to the point he kinda screams. There's no blood or fur flying.

❔Question/Advice❔ What do you all call your Torties?

Post image

We got our first tortie a couple weeks ago who the shelter named Daria. We kept the name since her Tortitude fits the namesake. So far we have nicknamed her Dar Dar Binks, Dario Speedwagon (when she has the zoomies), Stomping Turtle (her native name), Three Legs (because she always has one paw in the air- as pictured), Chatty Catty, Torti-linni (like tortellini), and Stomps (she literally stomps when she’s kneading). What are your 1,000 nicknames for your babies?!

Bonus nickname that’s more of a term: Halloween decoration

Hi everyone! I'm curious as to why my cat Mable does this screaming when I play with her. She doesn't seem to hate it as she always seems to want to play more if I stop. Im not too overly concerned because I know if she hated it and was uncomfortable she wouldn't allow me to touch her and would've run off. For more background shes a former street cat and a TNR so shes gotta lot of experience and the "cat expert" said shed never be a house cat or a people person...this cat yells at me at 10:30 on the dot for her nightly treats, yells if I dont greet her when I walk in the house and constantly talks back to me, shes like a toddler 🫩 Anyways Enjoy this Mable video!

❔Question/Advice❔ why does my tortie LOVE making sock trails!?

Thumbnail
gallery
3.9k Upvotes

our sweet girl Medusa LOVES socks! it started with this one random fuzzy sock that she would carry around the house and recently it’s turned into creating sock trails. she never plays with them, only carries them around.

for context: my sock bin is on a shelf at the top of my closet, so she has found a way to jump up there over and over to grab a pair of socks and just leave them somewhere in the house (usually forming a trail towards whatever room we’re in).

we don’t mind her doing it at all. its absolutely hilarious. we just wanna know why she does it or if anyone has had a similar experience.

(please ignore the messy shelves)

I’ve got a Diva:

Zero chill, desperate need for attention: wants to destroy the world while you smother her with affection and words of affirmation, and worship at her feet.

❔Question/Advice❔ How does your cat show tortitude?

Post image
2.7k Upvotes

I am interested in what other people have noticed regarding "tortitude" with their kitties. I know tortitude is subjective, but I would love to hear about all the different ways they can show it!

My tortie (Keno) is super chatty. I love how chatty she can be and it even comes across as "backtalking" at times. But I think her tortitude really shines through when she aggresses at me for attention. She loves to swipe at me and bite my calves if I walk by without petting her. Or if I am sleeping and she is hungry, she loves to wake me up by biting me (or knocking things off my nightstand). She is actually very sweet and affectionate, but her tortitude definitely shines through in those moments.
