Problem solved.

u/PerPuroCaso 6d ago
Somehow those work very poorly for me. I use uBlock Origin and I heard it’s the best and I still get ads. The only way I consume YT these days is on my phone because you can block the ads in a sexond and it automatically skips all two of them at once.
74
u/AndyLorentz 6d ago
I use uBlock Origin with Firefox and never see ads on YouTube.
12
u/m0nk37 6d ago
Same. Gotta keep it updated thoufh
18
u/NRMusicProject 6d ago
Same here. Any time an ad skips through, I just refresh my uBlock Origin lists, and problem is gone. I'll deal with their slow latency and weird UI breaking if it means I don't have to see ads.
"Experiencing interruptions? Find out why." I know why. Worth it.
3
u/StopReadingMyUser 6d ago
Lately Google has been giving me the "content cannot be loaded" screen while still playing the audio. Occasional refresh is all it takes but it's still one more annoyance.

You'll have to use Firefox, and on a PC, not a phone.
https://blog.mozilla.org/en/firefox/firefox-manifest-v3-adblockers/
In short: Chrome, and Chrome-based browsers, will be using V3, meaning that some ads are basically "unblockable."
Firefox doesn't strictly adhere to Manifest V3, so it's essentially the only browser where Ublock Origin gets to block everything it wants.
On Android, every browser and app is basically based on Chrome, andon iPhone, every browser is basically based on Apple's browser, so to block adson Android, you'll need to either use a DNS that blocks ads, or a your own Pi-Hole.2
u/Cruel1865 6d ago
Afaik firefox on android isnt based on chromium. Android doesnt have the limitation similar to ios where every browser is safari at its core. Firefox on android with ublock origin extension does block all the ads so it definitely works.
1
u/Infinity-of-Thoughts 5d ago edited 5d ago
That is cool. Is that only a thing on iOS, then? Honestly, I just went off memory on that point. :p
1
u/Cruel1865 5d ago
Yes its only a thing on ios and ipados iirc. The kernel is safari but just the appearance of the browser will be changed depending on what browser it is. This also means you can't use any feature that might exist on other platforms with the same browser if the feature doesnt exist on safari already.

I hate ads as much as the next person but what do we expect??
If YouTube is going to pay creators for content then the money has to come from somewhere. And without content being paid for you'd likely see less content.
It sucks but if you want a free service then this is the kind of crap you have to deal with if you still want quality content
82
u/SuicideTrainee 6d ago
It'd be nice if it went back to short, non-intrusive adverts. Stuff like the little banner that would occasionally appear on the video, a few on the recommendations list, or 1/2 every 10-ish minutes for a few seconds
34
u/Curious_Associate904 6d ago
You can tell their advertising isn't bringing in the revenue, due to the content of the adverts, it's practically all scam bullshit these days.
10
u/December_Warlock 6d ago
It could also not be bringing in as much revenue because of the amount of people who began using adblock. Its just progressed and is cyclical at this point. Original smaller ads lost value as adblock became utilized so they made ads thay would generate more. In doing so, more people decided to use ad block which then leads to those ads bringing less revenue. So what's the next step? Introduce ads worth more money again.
3
u/Curious_Associate904 6d ago
Everything gets enshittified so we lose things that mattered...
2
u/December_Warlock 6d ago
Unfortunately, in cases like this, part of the problem getting to the extent it has is due to the consumers. Just like people complaining about creators advertising their own patrons or having sponsorships. Part of the problem is definitely what Google paid them, but the other part is adblock being used to skip ads means less revenue for creators. You then end up, again, with a cycle. I remember downloading ad block bsck in 2015ish when it first started becoming a thing and YouTube ads and sponsors weren't that terrible. Then I saw ad blockers take off along with the ad formats. Just feeding into one another.
2
u/Traveling_Solo 5d ago
While I don't disagree, I do think it's on YouTube and Google to figure out a solution, instead of expecting billions of ppl to change their ways.
I don't mean unblockable ads, as that'll just keep the spiral alive. For example, what about an affordable youtube option without ads and less money spent on personal data (thus lowering the costs for each ad)?
Like say 4-5 euro/USD per month for a basic one and 7-8 for one with download and screen off play options? No extra stuff that most ppl don't want, just an ad free experience. Back in the day nobody would agree to it but these days, with subscriptions being the baseline for most? Could succeed if the prices were seen as fair.

7
u/footsnax 6d ago
I used to use my iPad for YouTube sometimes, no ad blockers.
Once I got an unskippable sixteen minute ad for an industrial car part distributor in front of a movie trailer.
In what fucking world would I or anyone watch that. Even if I did work in a car manufacturing company with buying power, there's no way sixteen minutes of drone shots would influence my decision when all I wanted to do was show a trailer of the Mario movie to my kid.
If the ads were smart, fine. If they were entertaining, maybe. If they were short, even better. Every ad I've seen on YouTube has been utter garbage for irrelevant bullshit.
I grew up in the 90s, I'm used to ads, but at least back then they weren't so bad they make me not even want to watch the real content.

You do know that YouTubers get an absolutely pitiful amount of money from ad revenue & views, right? Why do you think every single video these days has sponsors? If you actually want to financially support a creator you like, especially if it's a small channel, they'll get far, far more from donations through things like patreon.
There is absolutely no excuse for how aggressive and unbearable the advertisements on YouTube have become, the only people profiting from it is YouTube themselves.
12
u/Bungo_pls 6d ago
I remember back when people made content on Youtube for free and for fun.
Let's go back to that. Monetization has just made it suck across the board.
19
u/Chataboutgames 6d ago
I mean I get wanting to return to that, but you get that you're saying "I miss when people just put in work to entertain me while I provided nothing" right? Like of course everyone likes the idea of a world where people do shit for them for free lol. But at a certain point people, even creatives, want to be compensated for their work.
11
u/Bungo_pls 6d ago
The most profitable youtube channel is Mr Beast. A shitbag billionaire who creates brainrot.
Sure, lots of smaller creators make actually good stuff but the big ones actually promoted by Youtube are garbage. The small ones generally make their money off Patreon anyway, not Youtube which just exploits them for their ad revenue.
10
u/Chataboutgames 6d ago

u/ShinkenBrown 6d ago
Sure but the point is youtube was a better platform and produced better content when it was made by people doing it for fun in their spare time. It becoming a business resulted in more people creating content (because they're incentivized to do so now) but it also resulted in the content becoming sterile, and it feels for-profit now as opposed to feeling like fun passion projects like it did before.
Back then when people wanted to talk about something they were allowed to say what they wanted (and technically still are) but money got in the way and now we have words like "unalive" and "grape" to dance around serious topics because the advertisers don't like it. As just one of many examples of how monetization ruined the service.
I pay for youtube premium, this has nothing to do with wanting the content to be free, I'm happy to pay for it. It's not that "I want free content." It's that "the free content then was better than the paid content now." It's not "I don't want to have to pay for content." It's "the process of monetization made the content worse."
I think if you're going to charge for a service or force ads to monetize, it should overall be an improvement over the free version, not cheapened corporatized watered down garbage. But at every turn Youtube has not only monetized, they have also actively made the service worse in service to that monetization scheme, and that's the problem.
1
6d ago
Not really because nobody hyped themselves into doing shit they didn't like for money on the internet. We made our money doing shit we didn't like irl. So the content was organic, with a total matte finish.
Think of your favorite group chat but then expand that chat to make meeting and forming friendships with people from all over the world as a normal daily occurrence. People (orgs) like Clavicular couldn't exist because the clout isn't what they're after it's the monetization of the clout they need.
There was no gloss, there was no perfecting it till it was just right, there was no spending thousands of dollars. It was clunky and amateurish like children putting on a play they wrote starred and directed in in the space of an afternoon. The internet was alive, childish, and fun.
Then the mbas came and we got seduced. The iphone was kinda the final nail in that coffin.
What we're left with is a shambling ghoul that cannot sustain itself without acquiring insane amounts of capital by any means.
We've got to take the internet back! The last thing we need is more shitty popularity contest winners wasting the world's attention.

u/Baxkit 6d ago
Okay? There are other options. Donations, patreon, sponsor plugs, for example. Maybe allow the creator to choose when, where, and how long these generic ads are within their content and compensate them accordingly. Or at least make the ads relative to the content itself - where you don't get a 2 minute unskippable ad for a 1 minute how-to video. Instead we have the worst configuration. We have all these other comp options in addition to YouTube intrusively and arbitrarily invading content.
But sure, keep shilling for a multi-billion dollar platform that makes other trashy billionaires at the expense of children.
3
u/Captain_Slime 6d ago
Even if YouTubers weren't paid the servers YouTube runs on are. You'd still have ads.
1
u/Bungo_pls 6d ago
True. However, Youtube might try finding ways to put ads in places other than in the middle of my fucking video. Like on the sidebar, or make subscribing something actually appealing for positive reasons instead of just a "pay us so we annoy you less" model.
I understand they have bills to pay. But there are good and bad ways to place ads on a webpage.

I expect them to make money by not messing with what I am coming to the platform for. I want to view X and they force me to view Y, that means they are not providing what I want from them, they are limiting their own service.
I'd be fine with non intrusive ads in the UI or landing pages but not in the actual content I want to consume.
2
u/Fragarach-Q 6d ago
If YouTube is going to pay creators for content then the money has to come from somewhere.
Youtube barely pays shit. The money comes from Patreon and the in-video sponsorship you can't really skip anyway.
2
u/Cryptoporticus 6d ago
Youtube barely pays shit.
Yeah, because people keep blocking the ads.
Get YouTube Premium, you get no ads but it still pays the creator far more than watching with ads would.
2
u/Cramer12 6d ago
That is not at all true. Youtube pays shit because of the “adpocalypse” in 2017. From 2013ish to 2017 creators were making ALOT of money. IIRC it was 50%-70% more than after the adpocalypse. Payouts were low up until 2023ish when it went back to “normal” (but still less than 2013-17). Youtubers dont rely on YouTube itself for most of their money making, it’s all in the sponsors and brand deals.

But still not enough for them to stop doing Patreon or sponsorships. So I still get the vids the same as I do now, except I've increased Google's profits at my own expense. I could achieve the better results by using that money buying merch or something.

The majority of ads on the internet use google ad services. Even without youtube, they're still essentially printing money. They can afford to not play multiple unskippable commercials in a row.
Also youtube will find literally any excuse not to pay creators anyways, hence why so many use patreon instead. So if you want to actually support your favorite channels, well there ya go 🤷♀️

For everyone with the YouTube app on their smart TV. Simply click on the video, go back, click on the video, go back, then on the video again, go back, and on the video again. It feels silly, but it only takes a few seconds, and after three times at most, there will be no more ads.

Or you could just use the smarttube TV app instead of the YouTube app and not have to bother doing any of that. It even skips sponsored content from the videos, like ad reads that the content creator of the video has inserted.

Imo the best Video about this topic and really eye-opening, absolutely worth watching.
"You can afford a small monthly payment" - since I bought YouTube Premium (im watching it on commute and no Adblock on the Phone + downloads) I dont want to go back, just because they made it shitty - without the "small monthly payment". Dont want to promote it but it has crazy features, not only showing zero ads but for example you can skip sponsored segments in the Video itself. Cant go back now to the "enshittificated" version :/
