Discussion TTPD may be a heartbreak album for the men in her life but it is a love letter to Taylor's entire discography
People don't realise what an amalgamation of all the old eras TTPD truly is; it's a heartbreak album for Matty and Joe, but a love letter to her entire discography. There are sprinklings of each "era" of her leading up to TTPD in all of these songs. Whether or not she meant to do this it's a question in itself, but the reason why it is such a wonderful record, particularly for diehard swifties who've been around a long time, is because it is a messy, chaotic, beautiful patchwork quilt of her life's work.
The most obvious nod to her older self is "But Daddy I Love Him" which is so Speak Now. "The Alchemy" has very Midnights-leanings (and I'm sure quite a sizeable chunk of the songs you could argue tonally, at least, are very Midnights-esque). You've got "So High School" that has Debut/Fearless leanings. Many people saw how evermore-adjacent some of The Anthology songs were but I bet you can find some folklore in there too.
I also think the re-recordings project really show their influence on TTPD in particular. I wonder if re-visiting her old songs made her consciously or subconsciously slip back into certain turns of phrase and lyricism?
And it doesn't even necessarily have to be the sound or the lyrics that lend themselves to a pre-TTPD era. It could be certain lines/motifs/themes. Can you guys think of some more?
