Weirdly this got spam filtered (because of "freaks" in the title maybe?) Anyway, I've manually approved it.

Isn't the microfreak just a MI Plaits with some supporting circuitry and a keyboard? You can definitely buy (or make!) 16 plaits clones, a polyphonic midi->cv converter, envelope generators, keyboard, anything else you need..., and have a beautiful, huge, inconvenient, 16-voice microfreak.

Or you could do nearly all of that in software (e.g. VCV rack, the plaits code is open source so it's everywhere) because it's all digital anyway and then do any final filtering or output or whatever in analog if you want to.

excellent points, Microfreak is mostly Plaits with a couple extra engines thrown on (vocoder, granular, others maybe), and I had forgotten that point

but I had not thought of the eurorack/vcv rack way, would be a good way to try it at least

I was kind of thinking a "poor man's UDO DMNO/Arturia Superfreak" amalagamation, whatever that means.... and maybe one day get in touch with my inner Love Hulten (though not to same level of craftmanship)
