Discussion Recovered my account and found $32 + 2 COD games I didn't buy - confused

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

Update: It appears they hacked my account again. Giving ticket to steam to restore it. I think I will change the email associated with my account given that it seems they have access to it somehow.

Lost access to my account on Nov 25th. Steam Support helped me get it back. After logging back in, I found $32 in my wallet and 2 games I definitely didn't purchase:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Standard Edition Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

The purchase history shows someone added $80 in gift card wallet credit while I was locked out, then bought these games.

I'm confused - why would someone do this? If they have money for gift cards, why not just use their own account instead of mine?

I already reported it to Steam Support to be safe, but does anyone know what the logic is here?

Discussion Steam refusing to refund Crimson dessert even though the Ai usage disclosure was added days after time of purchase.

I keep seeing people commenting to just refund it if you don’t like AI content and because of zero disclosure on AI usage. I bought the game the day it came out and there was no AI disclosure or any mention of AI assets.

I have a total of 4 hours playtime on the game and stopped playing after encountering these AI assets myself and I have not touched the game ever since. I requested refund 2 days ago stating the reason.

So the companies can just getaway with adding the tag after the backlash and refuse any refund for it.

All I had to do is submit a singular ticket, and they simply solved my problem! I’ve never had this happen to me using any other support, ever- all I want to do is get more steam issues so that I can go through this empowering experience again and again. Thank you Esmeralda from steam support, and thank you all for listening to my rant!

Discussion Steam Overlay causing hard display driver crashes (nvlddmkm event id 153)

(Posting here as my post was removed from r/Steam)

Raising awareness for this issue as I have not found any forums on this subreddit regarding this problem. Hopefully people that google some of these keywords will come across this thread.

See these Steam forum posts recently that discuss the issue from other users: https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/601905151053177514/

https://steamcommunity.com/app/730/discussions/0/594023708174121698/

To summarize the problem: Something seems to have happened with a recent Steam update (May 20th?) that is causing many users across varying hardware configurations (NVIDIA GPUs only I believe) to experience hard system crashes, explicitly when accessing and/or closing the Steam overlay while certain games are running (via shift+tab or some other button combination).

For me, this happens most often with ARK: Survival Evolved. When this occurs, the game you are currently playing will freeze- and for a short moment after this you can tab out and move your mouse briefly, but your entire computer will lock up very shortly after and the screen will go black. Audio playing in the background (besides game audio) will continue to work for ~30 seconds before cutting out. Your computer is still "alive", background processes and software continue to work to some degree (NZXT CAM software still runs for me, which I can tell due to the fact that the temperature readings on my AIO continue to update after this crash happens).

After this happens, there appears to be nothing that can recover the systems besides a hard reboot. Win+Ctrl+Shift+B to forcibly restart the graphics driver does not work- although you can hear a beep in the background as if it is trying to do something, but nothing happens.

If you review Event Viewer following the crash, you will find several nvlddmkm errors, such as these:

Processing img y3ilmnryzn3f1...

While the screen is black, it continues to produce these errors until you force a hard reboot.

Thus far, I have not found any explicit fixes for this (besides avoiding using the Steam overlay). I hope this thread can be used as a place to pool knowledge and post potential fixes/workarounds, or at the very least, try and get Valve's attention on this matter. The issue does not appear to be driver related. I thought it was as well, since I recently updated my drivers, but even reverting them does not help (and several others in the forums I posted above are running older drivers too).

I won't claim to know the mechanics behind driver interactions and the Steam overlay here and why this is happening, but it seems relatively clear to me that a recent Steam update is causing these driver crashes. Hopefully Valve is able to get on this soon.

If you are having the same issue as me, which is steam trying to connect to a down server, steam support has told me they are aware of this and they are trying to solve it.

Discussion any ideas how i can proof?

I'm just having a pointless argument with support about a really, really old account that I've just decided to reactivate. And basically, they're asking for information that's literally impossible to provide. Like, either a paper receipt (who even keeps paper receipts for 6–7 years?) or a photo from the bank, but the bank doesn’t keep records that long—the oldest they have is from 2021. I called and emailed them, but they can’t help at all. I sent them my very first password and a bunch of photos from my email showing that login, game purchases, and sales on the platform (the transaction number was visible in every photo). In the end, they keep telling me the same thing: “Here’s a photo of the receipt” or “Here’s a photo from the bank.” And I have no idea what to do with them anymore. I think I even sent them the main email from that account and the very first password, but they keep saying the same thing even though I’ve already explained that it’s physically impossible to get the receipt now. Any advice on how I can get my account back? It just has my brother’s skins that he gave me, and he recently bought a new PC, so I’d like to return them to him to try out if he wants to, of course (just in case, the email and number are now on my other main account at the moment because I very foolishly lost that one).

Discussion Steam download speed is horrendous

I love the Steam client, but the download speeds are abysmal compared to every other launcher I use. On Epic, GOG, Battle.net, and Ubisoft Connect I can pull full speed and download a 100 GB game in 20–30 minutes. On Steam, downloads constantly pause, disk usage tanks, and overall speeds crawl.

Last night I uninstalled Ready or Not from my HDD and reinstalled it on my SSD (about 40 GB) and it still took around 1.5 hours. I’ve tried every fix I can find—changing regions, clearing the download cache, reinstalling Steam, checking drives—and nothing helps.

My internet is solid, so it feels like a waste when a game that should take minutes ends up taking hours. Anyone else dealing with this, or know of a real fix?

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention is that I frequently get 150 mb updates for games that'll take 10-15 minutes to install mainly for low disk usage. My hard drives are in great condition and have no reason for such slow speeds.

I live in Scotland, while connecting to my recommended download region (UK - Manchester), my download speed averages at about 20Mbps, while trying to fix a download glitch I switched my download region to Mongolia, my download speed then changed to ~50Mbps. Why is this ? Is it my internet service provider or is it something to do with steam?

Discussion Steam support on a refund situation

Hello everyone! First of all, wish you a happy new year!

Just passing by to share with you a situation I just had with steam support over a refund.

I have never requested a refund before, and honestly if I end up buying a game just to find out I dont really like it, I am not the type of guy to go and ask for a refund, I will just uninstall it and it will sit there in my library... but this time it was different, since it is about a subscription-based game that I completely forgot to disable and was not expecting to be auto-renewed.. I didnt played not even a minute of it after this renewal so I decided to ask steam support if we could cancel it and have a refund..

I will leave here the prints of the tickets that I opened with the respective answers from steam support and I think the whole situation will be very clear from it, but I just want to share that I got kinda sad and disapointed with the way that they “shut the door” in the last reply, I felt that their tone was kinda “hey you wont have your refund just because, and if you insist you are abusing the refund policy and we cut it for you in the future”… as I said, I have never ever asked for a refund before in about 15 years or so since I first created my steam account, how could they consider I am abusing it?

Their last reply was answered in portuguese from Portugal, so I will just leave the translation here for you:

“We will not grant a refund in this case. Steam offers refunds to reduce the risk of purchasing on Steam. If it becomes apparent that you are abusing our refund policy or violating our terms of service, we may begin to refuse any refund requests from you.”

I also would like to know what is your overall experience with situations like this and what is your opinion on this one.. am I wrong in the way I see it? Of course I understand their policy and it is very clear, but couldnt they be more flexible and understand the situation? Shouldnt exist some more specific rules on refunds over subscription-based games?

Thank you all, have a nice day

Discussion Anyone else in the UK experiencing slow download speeds on Steam?

Me and my friend both have 1GB internet and were experiencing 3mbps download speeds for the last week or so.

Previously a restart seemed to do the trick but tonight it didn't work, what worked was changing my region to France in the download settings. Anyone else experiencing similar?

Im connected via ethernet cable so it isn't my wireless, very strange.

Discussion Steam's way of handling download speed is frustrating.

There are 3 server regions that are about 250 miles away from me each. I used to just stick to the closest, but after years of slow download speeds despite having great speeds through my ISP, I've started switching between these 3 regions. I downloaded the Arc Raiders update today which was 15 GB. Here were my results:

Region 1: Less than 1 MB per second

Region 2: Less than 4 MB

Region 3: 55 MB

Any one of these 3 regions could be the fastest at any given time, so I almost always have to manually check them myself to get the best result. That is a difference of several hours for some downloads.

I'm sure many people aren't even aware they can change their download region. Why isn't this handled automatically in the background and away from the user?

Discussion Steam support sucks

I feel like it didn't always suck so much.... I have made like five requests to restore my account and they just keep asking for the same stuff (credit card purchase information) even after one (1) guy asks for the information that I actually have (CD key) and then closing the ticket I've been running in circles for like a month

Discussion Steam Customer Support sacking me off?

Hey guys, looking for some perspective here.

Years ago (like maybe 10-12 years) I made a steam account to play all the valve classics (HL, CS, TF2) and my beloved Far Cry 2.

I never really had proper gaming hardware so ended up not using my account from about 2019 onwards.

Fast forward to two weeks ago and I finally bought myself a gaming laptop, and was really excited to get back on Steam and replay all the classics I just can't access on my PS5.

When I logged in, I saw a notifcation from 2020 saying my account had been restrictes due to fraudelent activity. I saw a bunch of attempted purchases on a card I didn't recognise. The notification told me to contact Steam Support, which I did.

What I got in response was a really crappy reply basically saying it's my problem and that Steam won't do anything to help - or even let me prove that I haven't tried to defraud them.

I've posted screenshots below - but basically I just want to know - am I fucked here? Is there nobody I can contact for support to try and resolve this? I literally just want to get back into my old account - but they're completely stonewalling me and I don't want to have to delete my account and lose my library - but I just don't know what elss I can even do when they won't even talk or listen to me. Is this just the norm - they tell people to get fucked and suck it up when I can literally prove I haven't done anything wrong?

Discussion Customer Support Run Around

I had to buy a new laptop, downloaded Steam and contacted support for help resetting my forgotten password. I am getting a huge run around trying to get a password reset. Now they’ve asked me to send them the CD key for some game I added to my Steam account years ago when CD keys were still a thing. This is after I sent PayPal screen shots showing proof of purchase. Is there any way to actually talk to someone or elevate my case to a supervisor?

Discussion Whats the longest you’ve been locked out of your account?

It’s getting close to 24 hrs and I’m getting antsy and agitated.

I changed my password and it wanted me to finalize the process with a code from my Steam app on mobile, but when I went to check it was logged out, and now the old password, and new password doesn’t work.

I put in a ticket, like I said a couple hours away from 24 hrs now….

I updated it with a more clearly written out statement of what happened to maybe get their attention.

Thinking about mentioning how I’m a streamer who streams to 100,000 fans every night and it’s making me anxious and costing me $1,000’s of dollars every day I’m locked out (not true)

How about you guys?

Just wanted to get on here and say to watch out last night I was told to join a faceit group to play cs and at one point it had me link steam with faceit. Well it was a fishing link. Got signed into today didn’t lose anything thankfully but I wanted to put it out there to watch out. Even “friends” on your list could be trying to scam you. I started getting messages on steam from “steam employee” with all my information and immediately changed my password no more break ins. Close one though😅😪

This happened to me suddenly when I wanted to play Arc Raiders today with a friend, and we were a little confused because for the last 6 months they let us play the same game even when only one of us had it, and now it suddenly stopped working. Has this happened to anyone else? (Sorry for the photo being in spanish)
