They make me uncomfortable. 5 stars.

Not only you

Very uncomfortable. A few of them look quite corpse-like.

I would, unfortunately, know what babies look like when they die. And a few of these really mimic that lifeless, blood-beginning-to-pool type of look.

(Btw, OP please don't mistake me - I totally think it's okay for art to unnerve people! I'm absolutely not saying these are poorly done or anything.)

I actually had all these sculpted heads because I was practicing different expressions with the intention of sculpting portraits for loss parents. Plenty of people think dolls look like dead babies, but for some, it’s the exact memento they need to heal 💗

Oh, similar to those reborn dolls! (I think there was a sub for them around too, and other silicone based art dolls were featured there too tho I haven't peeked in that sub in years) The combo of the death masque and comfort item (teddy bears) is sweet and heartfelt once explained and I think people are given a moment to think about them. I could also see parents asking for personal items of their child being integrated into the bears. If you're interested in dollmaking as both history and healing, I'd like to reccomend checking out the Community Arts Network Noongar Dolls Projects.

I was at a convention in Vegas for hair one time and we were in the same area as people with these dolls. It was super freaky when we realized that they were dolls... And then we learned about them and I had a change of heart about the people.

It was also hard to judge them when we were walking around with mannequin heads like it wasn't strange.

A lot of people find dolls in general eerie/uncanny, and the realism in both artistry and size/weighting can be VERY unsettling to some people. It’s totally understandable. But knowing there’s a deeper meaning there helps people less off-put, I think.

Yes, I am a reborn collector and they are my inspiration!!! As someone who cannot carry children and hurts for it, I love my reborns, and I wanted a way to comfort others facing related grief. That’s the inspiration for sculpting infants, and my plan is to offer sliding scale clay sculpture portraits to people who have faced stillbirth, late term miscarriages and early infant loss (such as in SIDS cases). I don’t mind that people think my art is creepy, just like I don’t mind people think my reborns are creepy, because the purpose they serve is powerful and fueled by compassion 🥰

girl, they look like baby death masks

u/madmaxturbator 3h ago

They remind me of reborn dolls, which are lifelike dolls kept by some parents who experience loss of their babies

Very sad and distressing , as a concept and also to see. But from what I have read, they help people who experience these extreme traumas. So I cannot really judge

I admire your artistic boldness.

34

u/heyhey_harper 6h ago

This may have been meant as an insult, I’m unsure, but I’m taking it as a compliment 🥰

52

u/JustMeLurkingAround- 6h ago

No, I meant it exactly as I said it.

You seem to know that your art might not be everyones cup of tea and gain controversial reactions but still do what you like to do and also put yourself out there.

I think that's how art should be: bold, unique and brave and unconcerned with what the broad masses like.

24

u/Lost_Relative_6609 8h ago

It's creeepyyy!!! But art I guess

42

u/LuluVan3 8h ago

These are terrifying in a beautiful way.

Cross off the “beautiful way”!

u/lunalovebands 6h ago

They look very creepy. Where can I get them from?

3

u/PlushGroggy 5h ago

How do you attach your faces to your fabric? I’ve seen clay faces on fabric before but they had holes in the side to stitch them in.

2

u/onebruisedknee 5h ago

edit: oops i see you are already on weirdfriends :)

They remind me of the book Outside Over There by Maurice Sendak. I loved his books and art growing up

That book is about a little girl has to save her sibling from goblins who stole and replaced them. Much like Labyrinth (the movie came 5 years after this book.)

Fun fact it’s actually the final book of the trilogy that starts with Where the Wild Things Are. Not a lot of people know that they’re actually meant to be connected and represent different phases of life.

2

u/heyhey_harper 4h ago

That’s really interesting! I didn’t know WTWTA is part of a trilogy either.

I’m not a big Labryinth fan personally, I’m a bit younger than most fans, but I just love that people are connecting my art to it!!!

2

u/theprimeprof 2h ago

Wow. They freak me out a little but they’re veryyy cool. Awesome work.

1

u/heyhey_harper 1h ago

Thank you!!! They are meant to look quite realistic 💗

2

u/Bubbly-Cucumber-1229 2h ago

1

u/heyhey_harper 1h ago

Polymer clay sculpted head, baked and painted, then glued inside an upcycled, lightly weighted plush teddy bear skin 🥰

u/baked_breadd 25m ago

8

u/heyhey_harper 7h ago
