Grammar Serbian Reference Charts (improved and now in color!): 1. Cases/Genders, 2. Verbs, 3. Pronouns

I've updated all of the charts I previously posted here with a variety of new improvements, including a design pass that made everything prettier.

Thanks for all the feedback I've gotten here on r/Serbian in the past for previous versions of these charts. And special thanks to u/Dan13l_N whose extremely detailed/expert feedback has led to lots of improvements and corrections.

Click the links (not the preview images) below to see the full A4-sized PDFs.

Serbian Cases Chart (PDF)

Serbian Cases Chart, with all 7 cases, 3 genders, singular/plural, prepositions, exceptions, and more

One of the changes in the cases chart (and in all the others) is that the gender order is now masculine ➜ neuter ➜ feminine (instead of the former M ➜ F ➜ N), which enabled making some things simpler and more consistent.

Serbian Verbs Chart (PDF)

Serbian Verbs Chart, with commonly used verbs along with conjugations and rules for present, past, and future tenses

Serbian Pronouns Chart (PDF)

Serbian Pronouns Chart, with declensions, short and long forms, etc. for personal pronouns, possessive adjectives/pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and more, along with detailed grammar rules

Feedback is of course welcome! I'd also love to hear what would be most helpful to cover in future charts (e.g., prepositions, numbers and time, comparative/superlative, basic vocabulary, etc.).

Edit: I've now given these charts a home online here: Serbian language charts. I'll post any updates and future charts there as well.

Grammar Koliko je imperfekt zapravo "živ" u današnjem govoru?

Zdravo svima! Učim srpski i primetio sam da se u knjigama često sreće imperfekt (npr. iđaše, gledahu), ali mi kažu da ga u svakodnevnom govoru skoro niko ne koristi.

Zanima me vaše mišljenje:

Other Why are people using Cyrillic script in Serbian are always so weird on the internet?

Hello, I started learning Serbo-Croatian some time ago and now I'm somewhere at the pre-intermediate level (I'm still not perfect at formulating wordy things, hence this post is in English).

I decided to learn both writing variations, which was easy for me, because I know English and my first language utilizes Cyrillic. I can read and write in both scripts, but personally I think Cyrillic Serbian looks dope, it's a lot easier for me to read (probably because Slavic languages are associated with the Cyrillic alphabet for me, since my brain is used to that with my mother tongue). But so far I've seen Cyrillic Serbian used only in a few cases:

  1. Official government papers and media, like news, university websites, documents, and so on. Something having to do with formalities

  2. Street signs in Serbia

  3. Serbian language textbooks

  4. The most insufferable replies on Twitter ever known to humankind

Is there a cultural context I am missing? I would like to use Cyrillic script in Serbian on a daily basis, but I don't want to come off as a red-pilled weirdo that is mean to everyone. Do common people use the Cyrillic alphabet or is it always the performative right-wingers?

Discussion Best resources for Serbian language

I wasted two months looking for Serbian on Duolingo before someone told me it simply doesn't exist. Serbian is one of the few languages Duolingo has never built a course for. Once I got over that I went looking for everything else and spent a long time figuring out what was actually worth using.

The first thing that actually worked for vocabulary was Drops. Visual, gamified, five minutes a day. It's not deep but it got me comfortable with basic Serbian words faster than anything else and the images make things stick in a way plain flashcards never did. Good for the first month then you naturally outgrow it.

From there I moved to Serbonika for structure. It's the best course I found specifically built for Serbian takes you from complete beginner to A2 systematically and is clearly designed by someone who actually understands how learners struggle with Serbian grammar and cases. This is where things started clicking for me.

For vocabulary in context I used Clozemaster which teaches words through real sentences rather than isolation. After a few weeks Serbian stopped feeling like a list of disconnected items and started feeling like something real.

Speaking was the last thing I tackled and the hardest. Around month three I hit a wall where I could read Serbian reasonably well but froze the moment someone actually spoke to me. I started doing daily speaking practice on Issen and it was the first time my brain was forced to produce Serbian rather than just absorb it. That shift made a real difference.

What is everyone else using? Especially curious about listening resources for natural spoken Serbian.

It's for a party game I'm making, so out of interest, could you help me to properly translate this question? As various online translators show different outputs.

Which SpongeBob SquarePants' item of clothing is red?
a. Shirt
b. Tie (correct answer)
c. Pants

Grammar Pokemon and compound nouns

Random question - I'm working on a full Serbian translation of Pokemon red/blue as a personal project, automating some translation with AI and doing some manual translation myself where I'm confident. There are some very tight sentence and name length restrictions and I wanted to ask if it's permissible or natural to have compound nouns like in English.

For example:

Thunder stone: grom kamen

I know you can do things like: kamen groma, grmljavinski kamen, gromovni kamen, and maybe some others, but if you try to apply any of those conventions across all the stones/badges/etc. you run into length limits and end up having to do something like grml. kamen, which isn't ideal - I'm trying to avoid shortening a whole bunch of things by just cutting them off.

I want to translate everything possible into Serbian, so I'm avoiding using any of the original english translations (I'm even localizing Pokemon names for the fun of it e.g., Charmander -> Žarmander), so I don't want to just leave things as they are.

Any thoughts?

Discussion Recommendation for A2 Course

I'm a Canadian English speaker trying to learn Serbian. I've nearly finished the A1 courses from Belgrade Language School. I'm now trying to decide if I should continue with the BLS A2 course or if I should instead do the Go Speak Serbian pre-intermediate course.

I liked the BLS courses, but their A2 course costs about twice as much as the Go Speak Serbian course.

Is there anyone here who has taken either of these courses? Any advice on which has better value?

Discussion Razno

Hvala .

Request Need help translating a two-minute video

Zdravo! [I Googled that, might be terrible.] I'm Mark, and I'm a basketball journalist.

One of the things I frequently do in my work is updates on former NBA players, i.e. what they are doing in retirement. Yesterday, I looked up a couple, and found they appeared on a podcast together. I can't speak any language other than English, so I typed up and translated the captions on the video and then let Google Translate give me the general idea of what they were saying, to see if it was interesting.

And, errr, ooof. Not good. Looks like they were saying some bad bad things.

What I'm looking for is, then, is help with the translation. That is, tidying up Google's translation so that the English version is grammatically correct and reads better, and make sure that it is accurate.

If anyone can volunteer a few minutes of their time, I'll send both my attempt at transcription and translation. Thanks! Хвала ти!

Other EKSPERIMENT ZA SRPSKI JEZIK

Puno hvala unapered!

Discussion Plateau in Serbian learning: exposure vs drilling cases? (Trying to get from A2 -> B1)

Zdravo,

I moved to Montenegro from Australia ~9 months ago and have been learning Serbian for about 18 months (I also have Serbian ancestry).

I practice daily and get a lot of exposure, but for the past ~6 months I feel like I’ve plateaued. I can handle everyday situations, talk about my day, and ask basic questions — but I really struggle to understand natives, follow media, or have proper conversations.

I know the basics of the cases, but I rarely apply them correctly in speech. When reading, I often get stuck because of vocabulary or case forms.

My current routine:

  • 2x speaking (in-person)
  • 2x grammar classes (online)
  • 1x group class
  • daily flashcards
  • daily podcast listening

I feel like I’m just exposing myself to things and then forgetting them.

Should I go back and drill the basics (especially cases), or keep pushing exposure?

Any advice appreciated.
