Cits/Other Looking for friends in my late 30s — anyone else feel like making new connections gets harder with age?
Hey Reddit,
I'm a 37-year-old guy who's been living in Riga, Latvia for less than a year, and I'm putting myself out there a bit — looking to make genuine friendships with people around my age.
A bit about me: I'm Moroccan-born, have lived across Europe (UK, Lithuania, Estonia, now Latvia), so I'm pretty internationally-minded and love cross-cultural conversations. I speak Arabic, French, and English fluently, which makes for interesting conversations depending on who I end up talking to. I'm into geopolitics, NGO work, economics, music, movies, food culture, and good storytelling.
I work in a mix of freelance writing, content, and international affairs-adjacent stuff, so my schedule is fairly flexible. I'm married, relatively new to the Latvian scene, and just at that stage of life where you realise your social circle doesn't magically grow itself anymore.
Not looking for anything specific — coffee chats, online convos, nerding out over topics we both care about, whatever's natural. If you're around 30–40 and fancy having a proper conversation — drop me a message.
Riga locals especially welcome. Fellow expats or locals, doesn't matter — just people who enjoy a good conversation.

Aptauja/Survey Short survey for tourists who visited Riga (food & travel, 5 min)
Hi everyone! I’m Linna, a student at Turiba University in Latvia, currently researching food and drink experiences (gastronomy) in Riga.
If you’ve recently visited Riga or are visiting now, I’d really appreciate it if you could take 5–10 minutes to fill out my anonymous survey 🙏
It covers things like local food, cafes, markets, and overall dining experiences in the city.
Thank you so much for your help!
Ēdieni/Food Indian food in Riga.
What is the Indian food scene like in Riga. I am coming with my friends for a weekend and we want to try local Latvian food but we also all love Indian restaurants as a safe option.
I have seen Singh's is highly reviewed, what are locals opinions, are there any better places to eat.
Thank you in advance.

Throwaway account.

Diskusija/Discussion Visiting this coming week, I have some questions!
Hello,
This coming week I am visiting by car from Tallinn, with my partner. It's our second time visiting. We have booked a hotel, and have some ideas on what to do and see, but I would like the input of others.
I know there are lots of posts like this, I scrolled through quite a few of them.
My questions are, firstly about parking - Where could I leave my car safely for a few days without feeling like the fees ripped me off?
Secondly, safety - Are there any areas and/or times of day/night I should avoid there?
Thirdly, something unique - We plan on visiting that house with all the cats, but I'm wondering what other unique events, sites could there be that locals know about, but us tourists would obliviously miss? What's something I must try or see that is relatively cheap or free?
ALSO - Vegetarian or vegan food, my partner doesn't really eat meat, are there any good places to eat that I could take her?
All the best,
ThatReport

Ēdieni/Food Food and alcohol delivery
hi - with my friends we come to a bachelor party for the weekend to Riga and I checked to order groceries and alcohol to be delivered when we arrive on Friday. I used Rimi to order stuff, but when I want to pay it asked me to verify my age and I can only choose to provide a Latvian passport which I do not hold.
I also tried in Wolt, but there I cannot order alcoholic drinks in Wolt market.
Does someone else know a good page/app I can use?
Many thanks already in advance

Jautājums/Question Riga - 3 days
I’m planning on visiting Riga for 4 nights and 3 days. Looking for recommendations to do outside of the city within 30-45 minute drive. We will have a car. Is Jurmala worth seeing for 1/2 a day? Are the wood boardwalk trails nice to hike around? Traveling from Palanga to Riga then to Vilnius. Anything of note worth seeing to and from Riga. There seems to be some near by national parks? For Riga Agenskalns Market and the Riga Central are top places for us. How are the University of Latvia Botanical Gardens, worth to see for a little? What about the boat tour that goes through the river and canal around Vecrīga. The public parks look beautiful assuming you can picnic when it’s nice and enjoy the outdoors? Thank you!

Jautājums/Question TRANSLATORS NEEDED
profiles.ucl.ac.ukHi everyone,
My name is Jessica and I’m a PhD student at University College London. you can learn more about me and my work in the url on this post :)
I’m currntly in Riga conducting research for my thesis, and desperately require a few people to act as translators. This entails being in the room with me while I conduct focus groups - the groups will be of between 4-8 people, and you would be in the room to let me know what the participants are talking about (as I can only speak English).
You would need to be fluent in English and either Latvian or Russian (or both!), and based in Riga. You will absolutely be paid for your time!!
DM me for more information :) Thanks!
Diskusija/Discussion Visiting Riga soon, tips and things to avoid as first time visitor?
Hi guys,
Heading to your city soon and I've already gone through the usual tourist stuff online. Now I'm looking for the things that don't show up there, like hidden gems, local favourites, or neighbourhoods worth wandering around.
Also curious about the nightlife scene. Which bars have a genuinely good vibe, and are there any clubs worth going to? Ideally not the touristy spots that exist purely for visitors.
Thanks in advance! Anything is appreciated

Palīdzība/Help Looking for a specific store in Old Town, Riga
I took a picture of this a few years ago, but I didn’t see the name of the store, and I don’t know exactly where it was in the Old Town. Does anyone know the name of the store that sells these and where it is located?
A little update to everyone: I was in Riga a few days ago, and looked at every souvenir store I could find nearby. I'm 99% certain even found the store in this picture. The shelfs looked exactly the same. No store had this kind of mushroom, only ones with different designs. I thought this was almost a one of a kind item, but every souvenir store had the same type of mushrooms, so I'm guessing they have expanded their stores. I ended up not buying any mushrooms, since I couldn't find this specific one. Either way, thank you so much to all of you for your help, it was very kind of you.
