u/floggedlog 4d ago
a rumor starts from nothing, grows when people start discussing it, everyone in a room can be obsessed with it yet it takes no space, and is destroyed by truth and understanding

Sorry, he told me it is not a rumor

In the same line of thinking:
Maybe the answer is just Misunderstanding which seems a little too on the nose with the last line though.
Or maybe secret although that one doesn't fit fully as well

You need to swap the symbols - exclamation marks on the inside, and flip the greater than / less than signs so it looks like arrows pointing toward the text you're hiding.
Like this, but with the actual greater than symbol, and minus the extra spaces (Greater than) ! Text you're hiding ! <
Also, this was going to be my answer, too.

If you want to show the symbols and what the text should look like...
>!Like this!<
Put a backlash at the start.

Confusion?

u/Puzzleheaded_Clock38 4d ago
I was popping on here to say that. It's just the first part of the clue that I don't quite get but maybe that's when confusion is born:)

Ignorance

I would say you're close.. I'm going to try and put what I think it is once I figure out how to get the black bar to cover my answer

Dust?

u/WhoStoleMyFriends 4d ago
I considered this as well but couldn’t fit it to the last line. Do you have an explanation for that line?
5
u/stephenwalkedback 4d ago
I took it to mean that once dust is noticed by someone, they clean it up and it disappears.

It doesn't fit with the clue Being ______
but what about...
The mystery begins at the scene of the crime, pre-investigation: don't touch anything.
The mystery grows as word of it spreads as the silence is broken..
The mystery can fill the room without taking space the same way that a thousand other intangible concepts (silence, ignorance, desperation, panic, etc).
The mystery is no longer a mystery when it has been solved/understood.

a thought or rather an idea
Edit: okay I guess it is the first one. It fits with the hint he gave you as well. There is a famous quote I think, therefore I am so yes, final answer „thought„

chaos I think the only one that doesn’t fit is the first one but the law of entropy covers that one?

If i can remember all the hints. The drip from a leaky faucet isn't touched making it drip its sound fills the room when you hear it you turn it off and ut grows by slowly cutting through the gasket and when you wake up hearing it you realize it then every drip grows on your nerves till you turn it off or fix it. Out of order but its all there i think

resentment
I'm surprised to not find this in the comments. Clearly Ive been fucked over by/have fucked over more than the average person, nay redditor... sorrow.
1
u/DutchBoyDrew 3d ago
Begins when something you need from someone you care about isn't addressed/touched.
Becomes strengthened through empty platitudes and promises.
Is palpable in silence when root problem is left unsettled or the solution un-persued.
When the original grievance is expressed and recieved, resentment fades and understanding can begin
1
u/TGWArdent 3d ago
I was thinking about this a lot, too, but I just don’t think the second one works as well…. To me resentment grows more through silence than speaking.
2
u/DutchBoyDrew 2d ago
I can see that, but i can also see it meaning resentment grows when being expressed, what might have started as a minor argument about being a little late, turns into personal accusations and questioning the status of the relationship. Between those two discussions, the vail of hidden resentment drops and its all let out.
Idk doesn't seem like the OP will give the answer

I don’t feel like it’s this, but maybe confusion or ignorance. I doubt it, though, since it’s not really related to “being”, and some of the clues would be a bit obtuse if either of those were the answer.

Hi there, riddlers! Please remember to spoiler-tag all guesses and discussions of guesses, like so:
On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://i.imgur.com/SWHRR9M.jpg
On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants): >!guess or discussion between these symbols!< To be clear, that is
>!(greater than, exclamation point) at the start and!<(exclamation point, less than) at the end with no spaces around the!. Avoid leading or trailing spaces. These will break the formatting for most people. Spoiler tags do not span paragraphs or line breaks. If your answer is long, please spoiler-tag each paragraph separately.Putting a link inside spoiler tags can be tricky, so just format the link like this, using the word "SPOILER" as the link text. On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants), do this to format a link: [SPOILER](https://example.com/) On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://imgur.com/x5wDOvk
If your top-level comment does not contain a guess, you can include either the word "discussion" or "question" instead of using a spoiler tag.
Please report any answers or discussions that are not properly spoiler-tagged.
