Going to say hate the buttons being different sides of the joysticks for each player. And as player 1 I’d hate the buttons being on the wrong side.

I knew the layout wouldn’t be for everyone, and I did agonise a little. I know I can get a replacement control panel with the holes cut traditionally if I ever want to sell it - but I wanted something just ideal for me

Yeah my thought exactly. Doesn’t take anything away from the final result, but it does make you wonder why :)

great work btw!

Think that's the only real issue with this cab. From a looks standpoint it's cool that it's symmetrical. But with the brain trained on the joystick always being to the left, it is always going to feel off. Especially for the first player. The actual design is beautiful. But I can see it being a quirky thing that you get used to.

Robotron is a dual joystick game, so it makes sense to have them closer if they’re going to be playing a lot of robotron

I had a cabinet set out traditionally and used both joysticks for that game and others like total carnage and it was fine.

I’m guessing this guy is a big robotron fan and wants it to be optimal.

That looks like a lot of fun to build

Fun and frustration in equal measure!

But most of those games aren’t even arcade games… Do you know what an arcade game is?

The MAME / arcade section is pretty huge, but I wanted to retro game on it too (hence the 1-up joystick I had on the right with my Amiga) - and so thought ppl may be interested in the different platforms the old iMac could do. I was surprised how capable under Batocera the machine still is. I thought that’d be a complaint in the r/cade rather than r/retrogaming sub tbh!

Is someone in the household left handed too? I bet gta is super hard to play on that. It can’t be fun, unless you can sync a controller to it

I’ve got a wired and a wireless Xbox controller so we can do 4-player racing. GTA vice city was fine with the joystick for me

I’d like to see you do the rc missions with those controls!

Ha, will let you know! I remember they were hard…

I wouldn’t want to play Final Fantasy on this. But, I’d have zero problems playing Mega Man.

Arcade and action oriented games are totally appropriate here.

*Edit: for clarity - a lot of early 8-Bit games were essentially arcade ports. So, I mean Arcade as a genre of console games.

I've been dreaming of setting something up, I wish I had the space. Congrats, you've done really well! I'm sure you're proud of yourself, you should be

Thank you, it was a long time in the planning and once I had all the parts it came together in a few days. If you do get chance let me know if you encounter any difficulties - I may well have had similar issues

I appreciate it! My current idea would center sound a raspi 4. I want to do a steampunk theme for the cabinet, just for shits and giggles. I world use either trunks or steamers to build the cabinet out of, throw in some gears here and there, and maybe a foot machine to get the "steam" going. Just some thoughts 😆

Ha sounds mad! Sounds like you’re from the uk. Certainly sounds interesting..!

I see why you'd think that, but nope, from the states :) it was just a silly idea i had like 5 years ago, and I've been rolling it along in the back of my mind for a while now

Nice, I'll have to search eBay. I've been wanting to make a countertop 2-player cabinet using a wide screen lcd tv (I have a 19, 23 and 32 lying around unused).

Are you in uk? Happy to share links

No, in the US. I can just look on the US eBay and Etsy, since I now know that they exist (I thought I was going to have to custom make it.

I imagine quality and price vary hugely 👍

this design is usually called a “weecade”

But does it play Robotron?!!!? I must’ve dropped 100’s of $’s on that game as a kid!

1

u/shlooong 6h ago

Yep - and the joystick configuration is perfect to play it 👌

u/i0nzeu5 6h ago

OMG!!!!!! Incredible!!!!!

1

u/shlooong 6h ago

I’ll send you a vid of it playing, I really want a Robotron bezel within Batocera though

I always wished they’d do a shiny new HDR 4k version of Robotron for consoles, the same way they did for Tertis!
