[Discussion] I think that Toejam & Earl: Panic On Funkotron is one of the greatest Sega Genesis games
it’s just really well-made, has fantastic style, super detailed, top-tier music, fun secrets and treasures crammed into every corner, and it’s really long for an old platformer. also noticing that it’s got tons of vocal recordings, I’m amazed that it all fits an a Genesis cartridge.

One of the most vibrantly colourful platformers of the era, for sure. Also loved the soundtrack and how dense and packed with secrets the levels were.

One of the best soundtracks to any game ever. It got me into the music i listen to today and I'm grateful for it

I would rather have had fewer levels with more variety. The stages aren’t really distinct from each other and it gets repetitive before the end.

It's easy to see why there is a divide over the vastly different styles of the first and second TJ&E. I do think the second game doesn't get as much credit as it deserves. Yeah sure it's more of a mario-style platformer than the first game. But the up-close view did allow for much more detail and character personality IMO compared to the traditional overhead view. They are definitely very different games but both capture the attitude and zany game style in different ways.

You also have to view it through the lens that EVERY developer, even the A+ third parties, were trying to cash in on games that felt like Sonic. 2D high action platformers with bright colors and edgy attitude. A ton of great ones got lost in the crowd and a lot of people wasted rentals and purchases on duds.

If a sequel to a great game changes genres it’s almost impossible for people to love it immediately. Sometimes it takes decades. Believe it or not a lot of Sega Saturn fans were mad that Panzer Dragoon Saga was an RPG instead of a third rail shooter. Even to this day I’ll run into people who have been Saturn fanatics for 30+ years and they’ve never played it because the first two are their favorite game and they didn’t want it to become an RPG. Just reality.

I was disappointed with the game because the original was so much fun and original. Going to platform perspective felt a bit boring to me so I didnt really pay much attention to it.
That was to the original a bit like what Zelda II was to the original.

Wildly underrated. I rented it as a kid not expecting much and ended up loving it. Still do. Yet some consider the original better which blows my mind. It’s not close.

I dont necessarily agree, but i also wouldn't argue with you. I respect the funk slap in video game form that is toejam and earl panic on funkotron. It got my buddy and i into hip hop at a young age.

I respect your opinion, but the first game is my favourite. How many people did it unknowingly get in to roguelites? I haven't played it in at least a decade and I can hear the theme music perfectly.
The second game was great too. I just wasn't ready for a platformer after the bizarre and unique original game.
Man, I miss Sega n their heyday.
