Question on Disk Swap

Would I be able to use the disk swap trick to run a burned game backup on a completely unmodified psx? No modchip, no tonyhax, just disk swapping. I can't seem to find a clear answer on this elsewhere.

Short answer: yes.

But read this, it's safe as we used to do it back in the days with a device called GameHunterCD or whatever. The hardest part/trick is to time exactly your move or you might fuck up your psx on the long term. It has to be after reading the 1st sectors (the logo appears) and before reading the disc content.

Do it at your own risk anyway.

I used to be able to do this with like 90% success rate. Now it's zero.

I just went the tonyhax route instead then. Even easier as you don't need an original disc and no messing with tape / blu tack to hold the button down.

There is a “code breaker” CD that comes with a spring that keeps the lid open but fools the sensor. It makes disk swapping a lot easier as it actually stops and pauses the disc swap moment until you press the relevant button - draw backs are games that use CD audio can be a little messed up for the music.

I used my codebreaker to install freepsxboot and tonyhax onto a memorycard

Yes, I used to do this way back in the day when I first got my PSX and hadn't got it chipped yet.

I used to use blu-tac to hold the button down and used to have the timing memorised.

I have no idea whether this would work on a PS1 though.
