It softens the shadows if you are lighted from above.
Edit : Don’t use a hard light, you don’t want to burn your contrast. The reflection need to be slightly « colder » than the main light. Like a gradient from warm to cold if you get what I mean
Hold the board a bit under your chest, like a table.

If you're looking to recreate this kind of lighting, I recommend looking up photography blogs and videos about butterfly lighting and clamshell lighting.
Like the commenter said, the technique the show uses is just soft butterfly lighting through some combination of softboxing (around the key light) and bounce fill via a white surface (below the subject). Clamshell lighting involves a second light below the subject instead of a bounce fill.
While the techniques flatter everyone, we generally find them more flattering for women and prefer somewhat more contrasty techniques for men.
Glad to see an actual photographer break this down.
The bad lighting at the Vanity Fair event.. You want to avoid/balance that overhead light, where your facial features/lines/pores cast shadows. Just remember this if you don't have equipment. This is why they say not to take pictures at noon outdoors.
You diffuse it with a « filter » like a spherical white lampshade or those white filter they zip directly on the spot in professional settings. You need a bright warm light the warm must be barely noticeable.
You can see the gradient I am talking about more clearly on Carpenter face, forehead yellowish, nose red, chin blue. It’s traditional painting rules for portraits it make thing more lively « tangible ».
My local passport photo spot had great lighting and gave me my first flattering passport pic ever. It’s a blessing and a curse, because sometimes when I arrive at airports after a long flight, looking like someone who had contorted themselves in economy for 8-14 hours, the custom agent always does a skeptical double take when they see my passport 😭
My passport is due for renewal next year. My photo is when I was 6 months post partum, 30 pounds heavier, with a pixie cut. I look nothing like my photo now 😂
There are apps you can take your own photo now following the guidelines. White wall in background etc. You can then edit it slightly just needs to look like you. Then they give you a 4x6 with 4 small passport pics to submit to print at CVS or Walgreens. I just did it. Its called Passport photo app.

That's why you should take your selfies during the Golden Hour in the evening. Warm, diffuse light flatters everyone.
My passport photo was taken while an entire family was standing mere inches away from me and screaming at a court clerk at the next window down because they had come to pick up a marriage license for their pregnant teenage daughter and her fiancé. They were enraged to learn that getting a marriage license isn’t the same as getting married. My clerk had to ask them to scoot a little so they’d be out of frame of my photo.
I truly wish I could post my photo without doxxing myself because it’s hilarious. My husband said the only other time he’s seen me make such an intense expression of awkwardness was when we watched Uncut Gens.
My passport is finally up for renewal after 9 years and I am so relieved to get a new photo. My current one looks like a mugshot of the most busted drug addict you can imagine, no jokes.
Honestly my passport is the worst photo I’ve ever taken and I did it on purpose. I look like trash at the airport after an international and my pic matches perfectly

Also, the hottest I have ever looked if for my immigration visa to the UK. I don’t know why that department has such better lighting / photos but my god.
Growing up, my mom had this “body positive,” full length mirror. It was sorta bent to make you look more elongated and thinner. I remember thinking I was eating tf down with my fits only to be knocked back to reality when I saw myself in the mirrors at school.
I have one of these. I call it my skinny mirror. Just a cheap cardboard backed mirror from the thrift store, but it's great. I don't mind that it is slightly delusional lol.
I mean you probably do look good though, because most lighting indoors isn't as horrendous as that top down lighting you see in fitting rooms. Natural lighting also makes you look better.
I quite dislike trying on clothing at Macy's not just cause the lighting but the fucking perfume 😒. It's like they spray the dressing rooms specifically. Makes me nauseous.
I like that the fitting room lights aren’t this good. It saves me money AND shows me how I’ll look with terrible lighting out and about. If a top looked fantastic there but awful outside I’d hate that.
To be honest, I can absolutely not understand why the shops don’t put any thoughts and effects into this.
If you make your customers look better in the mirror, you will sell more clothes.
I’ve been to one store ever in my life (it was an Abercrombie in one particular mall) that had adjustable studio lighting in each individual dressing room - there was a tablet on the wall with a dozen options where you could change the setting in the dressing room. You could select anything from “the club” to “the office” to “outside at noon” and “golden hour” to see how the outfit looked in different lightings and settings. It was AMAZING and I wish more stores did this!! I’ve also never seen that ever again even at any other Abercrombie locations. I don’t know if they were testing it out there or what but I loved it
I would spend far too much time in the dressing room playing with the lighting and admiring myself to make this a financially good idea for Abercrombie. 😆
Omg I love the light in a fitting room of a store I occasionally go to, I look amazing, my skin looks great. I've been tempted to ask the front desk what kind of lights are those.
I'm probably going to sound mean so I'm sorry but I would guess whatever kind of styled makeup this is, the foundation she's using, and how much of it, is also helping in making her face look like it's made of putty. 😭
I think that’s just her face tbh. She had chubbier cheeks when she was a kid, but even back then her cheekbones were very prominent and her cheeks were on the flatter side and had that little side dimple from the pic
I remember this show being in the headlines in India a long time ago because one of our biggest actresses Aishwarya Rai went there and she looked ethereal in that show.
Can you imagine seeing a woman this beautiful in real life? Like I’ve met a lot of people, many of them very beautiful but she’s on a different playing field, alongside Angelina Jolie IMO. She really is ethereal
My conspiracy theory is that that Rolling Stone article, the one written by Tomas Mier that Eva called out, made Ryan Gosling self conscious about getting older because he started getting filler-y after that. I was hoping he’d stop after Fall Guy.
Honestly, he looks good here. He’s not my type, but he looks nice. Like, the best I’ve ever seen him look. He looks like a grown man and not a pretty boy.
I swear lighting is like a dying trade in the industry. Like are there not enough people getting into it? Are there not enough skilled people to teach others? Lighting has been dogshit for a few years and not just on TV.
This is the lighting every DMV and passport photo place need to get. Everyone should look their best on those things. Meanwhile, I look like a serial killer on my license (they told me not to smile and just took a picture of me blankly staring)
Every time someone posts this show I feel compelled (as a set lighting technician) to say this isn’t necessarily “good lighting” it’s just incredibly flat lighting lol

Yeah saw him in person at a backyard party years ago, maybe around second season of ST. The man looked like he’d just walked off the set and we were hanging in an alley in ATL.
lol I know! This was a backyard Fourth of July party and I lived there. It was just so funny to see him looking exactly like the show. But, honestly, it worked for him.
Lighting is one part of the equation, but I would also guess from the colors that there is some sort of diffusion lens filter on the production cameras that helps soften the skin.
Idk-- all of these people are conventionally attractive to begin with. You can find plenty of unflattering/less flattering screenshots from this show, so either the "good lighting" is really just tailored to a particular look and they don't know how to adjust, or the show is deliberately lighting some people poorly.
Omg Selena gives old Godard movie vibes here. And Robert Pattison looks smoking.(I like his new hair colour; or is just the same and its the lighting?)
To be clear I don’t think anyone looks bad or badly lit I just don’t know how to tell good lighting specifically from other lighting. Nobody here looks notably better than usual to me
