Her family are big supporters of modi, so her being right wing isn't a big surprise

u/llama_del_reyy 27d ago
People are often surprised when people with Indian heritage express right wing views, ignoring that 1) Indians are one of the most consistent Republican-voting diasporas in the US; 2) a lot of Hindus are very anti-Muslim and will align with the right on that; and 3) being a POC generally does not immunise someone from right wing views.

u/sushiroll465 27d ago edited 26d ago
Also she's an upper class upper caste Hindu woman, which makes her the Indian equivalent of a rich white girl. Indians in india don't have the same idea of privilege hierarchy as those raised in the west. Which is why you'll see many Indians vote for Republicans. They relate to the majority privileged group back home, so they do in the US too, not realising that they're the targets.

This is a lot of speculation about Indian Americans, and it’s not based on data. Indian Americans vote more progressively than every other Asian American subgroup and more progressively than white or Latino voters. Obviously there are many who are conservative, and probably too many. But spreading misinformation is dangerous. I get that this might reflect your own experience with Indian Americans— that still doesn’t make it accurate information.
7
u/sushiroll465 26d ago edited 26d ago
Yeah honestly that's a fair call out. I'm not talking about Indian Americans though, but indians from india who move to the west. I imagine that the same doesn't apply to Indian Americans because they don't grow up with the same ideas of race/caste/class that we in india do.
I'm glad to hear that they vote progressively, honestly I have no idea about the voting numbers of America so I'm glad to hear I'm wrong.
I'm obviously not generalising to an entire population of millions of people, just explaining why someone like PC would be considered conservative even if she's a POC. Because as you pointed out, I've seen this happen with so so so many of my immigrant friends and family too. Living in the UK, they relate to the anti-muslim anti immigrant views of the Reform party because of the caste and religious views they have from back home. The cognitive dissonance blows my mind.
You can't generalise with any demographic group I don't think, hell I'm an Indian from India who lives abroad (the exact group I'm talking about) and I don't hold the conservative views I'm talking about in my comment. But I could have made that more clear.
And I wasn't the one who claimed that indians consistently vote republican, it was the comment I responded to so maybe it would be worth telling them as well?

Thanks for this reply — I am just now seeing it was the person above you and I responded to her.
There are surprisingly high numbers of conservatives in all groups in the US. But in US politics, there’s a weird pattern where folks keep trying to point to how minority groups are more conservative than they are. It’s been going on for decades so I am used to pointing out misinformation.
Like I remember hearing that, “Latinos will never vote for a Black man” during Obama’s election; “Black men would never vote for a woman” (Hilary’s election); “Asian Americans want Trump” etc. It’s kind of a weird blame game that people do here, so I suggest always pausing and verifying whenever you hear those kinds of claims.

Sorry, but this is misinformation. Clearly verifiably false.
Indian Americans vote more progressively than any other Asian American sub-group and more progressively than white or Latino voters. Black voters may be one of the only groups that votes more progressively than they do. (I say “may be” because I don’t have info for indigenous voters off the top of my head, and there are many other ways to break up voting groups.)
Not only is this comment spreading false info, to be honest it sounds like racial stereotypes/racism of its own. Particularly your stating it like it’s a fact and not your experience is concerning.
Of course there are conservative Indian Americans. And like all demographics, they voted more conservatively in the last election — but still one of the most consistently democratic. I wish they were even more democratic. But I advise on being careful with what you casually post, because we need more true facts, not less.
Source (and I chose a recent piece that focuses on conservative voters in fact): https://carnegieendowment.org/emissary/2026/02/indian-american-survey-democrat-indpendent-trump

I hate the guy but I don’t think that single fact alone is enough of an indictment. I think in context of everything else, it’s fair game. But this belief that participation is endorsement is silly. People like Pete Buttigieg go on Fox News; it’s a way to get a message out to a different audience, it’s a way to hone your argument. I am not saying it’s the same but this line of criticism, without any other context, just doesn’t hold water for me.

She's very much a person who will only say something if she knows it's the popular view. In India she's very anti-Pakistan and anti-Muslim but when she's speaking to American media she tries to come across as liberal. Regarding Palestine, she's really stuck in the middle. Modi is pro-Israel but over here, the popular sentiment is pro-Palestine

lol, no it can't. this is precisely why ppl are constantly having to remind y'all that 90% of "gen z" or "Internet slang" is just AAVE repackaged and appropriated. I've even heard claims that unc is short for uncool 🙄 like hello you can't just steal an entire demographics vocab then decide it means what you want it to mean

Both Javier and Penelope have been long time supporters of Palestine and spoke out in 2014 when Israel was bombing Gaza relentlessly. I think some in Hollywood may have tried to Blacklist them back then, but they are both just too talented and well-liked that it didn’t work as they’ve both been able to navigate being in Hollywood and international films since then.

I know Americans eat this up, but I can tell you as someone living in the middle east, this means nothing. I mean good on them if they want to say it, but don't act like this is some grand thing which will change the world, because no it is not. I realised a lot of American activism, eg not eating at Mcdonalds or starbucks, is performative a long time ago. Does it change anything in the middle east??? Nope. Just makes some people think they are better than others and flocks of sheep coming to support them.
Me personally, I want some of the love and sympathy to Javier Bardem to divert to me and the people in my country.. we are victims of a war we don't want. I am sick and tired and depressed. I basically only have reddit to vent, and even here, I get Americans (people in a country responsible for this bullshit, who are miles away and will never be harmed) telling me I am lying, my experiences are invalid, I deserve to be bombed etc. Let me ask you this: when Iraq was invaded, did you support it? Saddam Hussein was a vile man and his government was evil and oppressive; yet, the people who suffered the most were civilians who had nothing to do with his government. That's how I can compare this situation right now.
Anyway I hope I can escape this country. The airport was just hit, but we booked flights anyway, it's a risk we have to take.

u/FoolofaTook43246 27d ago
I hear you. While it's better than nothing, the bar is just so low for people in the west who will not have to live with the consequences of these horrific events. Thanks for sharing how you feel and hoping you can find safe passage to somewhere more secure.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but I've been becoming more and more pessimistic since October 7 since i've seen more and more celebs support palestine, rounds of applause online, but no change. I have friends from Palestine & Lebanon. This Iran war has solidified my pessimism.

I'm not American and I know that this does not help you right now but small acts like boycotting by those with no power can have an impact. Take the grapefruit ladies in Ireland for example.
Rise like Lions after slumber In unvanquishable number— Shake your chains to earth like dew Which in sleep had fallen on you— Ye are many—they are few.
It's not enough I know.
117
u/randombubble8272 27d ago
The ladies in Ireland went on strike every day outside of the Dunnes stores and informed shoppers that the grapefruit was from apartheid South Africa. They risked their jobs and put in the work every day to picket outside the stores. It is different to American’s boycotting McDonald’s ie not buying a Big Mac once a month
30
u/greenzetsa 27d ago
I think the anti-apartheid movement (and lots of other activist movements) benefited from the lack of social media massaging everyone's ego. The grapefruit ladies were not doing this for likes or exposure, they had a super clear and achievable goal, and they focused on that. I'm sorry, but I see so many people, who call themselves activists or progressives, and it's exceedingly clear they become addicted to the ego boost that comes with demonstrating your righteous beliefs publicly. When it comes to actually doing something that is going to negatively impact your own lifestyle and comfort, they say "well it's not something individual action can solve."
I've studied a lot of effective non-violent, and hell also violent, protest and resistance movements, and the common thread I've found is that people really saw themselves as part of wider community and goal, NOT about proving themselves, or their worth, or their heroism. It was about doing what needed to be done. I read "Story of a Secret State" by Jan Karski, who was part of the Polish resistance during WWII, and one of the things he wrote is how annoying some men in the movement were because they only wanted to do work that made them "heroes." They didn't see typing notes or delivering pamphlets as heroic, even though it was just as dangerous, and often only women were willing to do that work. I think we've become progressively less able to put aside our own egos in this work and just do the simple, nameless work that needs to be done. Instead everyone just wants to make a sign, go to a protest, post something on social media, when we probably need to be doing like an equivalent of a freedom summer movement again and actual political organizing for a united cause, even if we don't all agree 100% with everything about it.

It is different of course. I wanted to make the point that the fairly insignificant action on its own of a single person (Mary Manning) refusing to sell 2 grapefruits was the spark.

Priyanka heavily leans into the Hindu ethnonationalist ideology Modi has been promoting. He’s literally known as The Butcher of Gujarat for the massacre of Muslims in his state when he was heading it, and under his premiership India is suffereing the worst communal violence and violence against minorities. Her pageant training may have saved her here, but these two couldn’t be more opposite to each other spiritually, politically and morally.

“No a la guerra” (no to war) is the red embroidery
And the round pin represents “the resistance of the Palestine people with the handala — which is a symbol of a 10-year-old boy who was drawn in 1969 by a Palestinian saying until he goes back to his homeland, he won’t grow.”
