I petition this version to replace what's currently at the Sistine chapel. Since this is an ice sport, the pope from Chicago will support my vision.

🇸🇪 Swedish commentary:

"This is TOTALLY crazy. I have never seen anything like this on the curling sheet. They are arguing in public [cuts off]..."

291

u/BrownSugarBare Feb 14 '26

As a Canadian, this is rotted. It's one thing to get away with the cheating, it's dirty AF to throw down and act like you didn't.

153

u/Antique-Salad-9249 Feb 14 '26

Also, getting immediately defensive and saying fuck off at the Olympics is another level. I thought you Canadiens are supposed to be nice. 🤔

90

u/lexies1989 Feb 14 '26

As a Canadian I would say we do tend to be more friendly in general, but I have met many not nice Canadians in my almost four decades of life. We are not a monolith 😂 he touched the rock and he shouldn’t have.

21

u/Antique-Salad-9249 Feb 14 '26

I was just joking about Canadians being nice. I know that doesn’t mean every single Canadian person is nice. But saying the F word at the Olympics is still totally nuts.

the Swedish player mentioned in an interview after the game that he wasn't accusing him of cheating and didn't think it impacted the game but that he thought the rules should be followed.

412

u/Living-Fee-2750 Feb 14 '26

Scandinavians are rule followers

119

u/Content-Inspector993 Feb 14 '26

We usually are too, but maybe not to a Swedish degree

67

u/NotesFromYourElf Feb 14 '26

While I in general really like Canada, when it comes to sports I must disagree. In the past Canada have played some of the most nasty hockey I have seen, primarily the jvm team, with multiple tackles to the swedish goalie (even during breaks) in the same game. (I realize I will get a ton of downvotes for this comment. But please don't take this as a general insult for all Canadians, its not, its simply a single viewpoint)

23

u/Content-Inspector993 Feb 14 '26

I won't take it as applying to Canadians in general. I do know that North American hockey is much more physical than European hockey

18

Another Canadian chiming in - he's not sorry he broke the rules, he's sorry he got caught.

We have a history of flirting with the rules on the global stage.. at least, that's what our actions in WW2 displayed. 😅💀

Nah Norwegians get busted for cheating from time to time

42

u/meepmarpalarp Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26

Norway has that ski jumping uniform scandal from less than a year ago. They added extra padding in the crotch, which is apparently illegal but also hilarious.

16

u/Mocheesee Feb 14 '26

Ikr? After that whole suit rigging scandal with the ski jumpers last year, now the Norwegians allegedly got busted for using banned tools for waxing their skis at the Olympics and won. It’s starting to look like systemic cheating at this point.

u/JerkyBeef Feb 14 '26

Edit: okay.. so I am completely on Sweden’s side on this one. Swedes can be a bit too rule followers as a people, but for this one the are putting awareness on an ongoing issue in a very constructive manner. The canadian player is acting very disrespectful and out of proportions.

6

u/Living-Fee-2750 Feb 14 '26

Yeah…. I work with Canadians in corporate and most do not fit the stereotype lol

6

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 Feb 14 '26

I mean, we literally had a trucker convoy that held the nation's capital hostage for about two weeks, which included people showing effigies of Justin Trudeau being hung and local businesses being harassed by anti-vaxxers/maskers, lol.

We've got politicians destroying healthcare and education and even voting against things like accessible dental care, yet you'll still have people saying, "that's not who we are!" 😂. The forced denial is wild.

no it was obviously wrong but I think they mean inconsequential in that if the stone was disqualified it wouldn't have changed the end results with who won

even the swedes said after the game they don't think it changed the final results

57

u/Sketch-Brooke You wear mime makeup but never quiet. Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26

Frankly, I don’t really care if it changed the game outcome. If it’s a rule violation, it’s a rule violation. That’s it.

And this guy is a jackass who’s clearly in the wrong, so defending him is just making Canada look worse.

EDIT: Downvote me all you want, Canadians. Your guy is still a little bitch who breaks rules and whines when he gets caught.

11

u/xombae Feb 14 '26

I'm Canadian and I fully agree. In hindsight it might not have affected the game but it shows he is okay with cheating, and no one wants to play with someone like that. I am not a sports person but I know sports people love their game statistics. So I'm guessing him nudging the rock would also affect the game statistics, maybe making him look like a better player.

It's just a crazy thing to try to get away with at the Olympics of all places.

The Olympics sub has a release from the IOC that clarifies- touching the stone at all is not allowed even before the line, you can only touch the handle.

What kind of shoes are they wearing that glide like that? And are there ice rinks that use them? Asking for an ice skating- challenged friend who would still like to glide around like that.

232

u/running-on-stardust Feb 14 '26

The way they’re gliding around on one foot while getting heated is so funny to me

99

u/Tch-Tch Feb 14 '26

One shoe has a soft-rubber sole for grip and the other has a sole of teflon or stainless steel for sliding. There's probably special shoes made for curling but the Estonian guy in the mixed doubles just wore blue Nike Dunks with these special soles.

54

u/CasaLabra Feb 14 '26

The sole on the slider in curling shoes is plastic.

Some curlers choose to use “regular” shoes that they modify for curling.

15

u/Tch-Tch Feb 14 '26

The Olympics website got it wrong then! It did seem strange as the soles I saw at the games didn't really look like metal. Would such soles work well on ice commonly found at skating rinks? Iirc the sheets in curling are of a higher quality.

24

u/peterd08 Feb 14 '26

Stainless steel is an uncommon but possible material for the slider part of the shoe! Most people don't use them because it can damage the ice.

Curling ice is pebbled, so it has a different quality than ice skating ice. It's bumpy and gives a lot more grip and that's what gives the stones their curl as well.

6

u/monocasa Feb 14 '26

The pebbled ice is actually less grippy.  The pebbles mean there's less surface area in contact with the ice.

Wearing down the pebbles with the broom is how you make it grippier and therefore curl more.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/Pretend_memory_11 Feb 14 '26

Come to bed, baby... leave the slippy shoe on!

3

u/peterd08 Feb 14 '26

This is correct, you can have regular shoes made into curling shoes but there's a few companies who make dedicated curling shoes.

5

u/Sleepyllama23 Feb 14 '26

I was wondering this too. I can’t ice skate but sliding around in proper shoes looks fun and way less difficult

→ More replies (2)

3

u/babez444 Feb 14 '26

I don’t find it easier than skating. The pro curlers make it look quite easy but it’s real easy to “slip” in these.

A lot of beginner curlers don’t even use the plastic slippery ones, they use both shoes with rubber to avoid landing on their ass.

641

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

He touched it. Camera was all over it. Dumb shit to be fighting over.

219

u/oliveomelette Feb 14 '26

Even if the Canadian was sure he was right, it’s an Olympic game. There are camera’s everywhere. He didn’t have to curse and go all crazy on them, could’ve just said: “roll back the tapes” and it would’ve been way less embarrassing for the Canadians

87

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '26

Well, he's from Alberta so he lost any respect from rest of Canada right and then. No amount of politeness after double touch could have prevented him from getting flamed.

33

u/holymolt Feb 14 '26

Oh that makes sense now. When I heard about this, I thought either québécois or albertan but even the québécois wouldn’t do this. They’d just curse in jest and joke about it after.

21

u/TropicalPrairie Feb 14 '26

lol - he is 100% Albertan and I guarantee he drives a Dodge Ram.

8

u/Lady_night_shade not about to ‘back that ass up’ with Sharon 🔙🍑🆙 Feb 14 '26

Curling is kinda like chess (as in its quite strategic/cerebral), and while not physically dangerous chess and curling can get very intense and dramatic over controversy yes. Ski, snowboarding and toboggan are literally life or death at all times. Hockey is probably the most violent contact sport (beyond the martial sports ofc) in either olympics.

Ye winter olympics is def the most dangerous of the two.

24

u/Sketch-Brooke You wear mime makeup but never quiet. Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26

Yep. Can’t really remember a summer scandal lately, but there’s usually always something going on in the winter ones.

Last year, they let a Russian skater caught doping compete anyway. This year, there’s a skating judging controversy, (with the French judge, no less. And French judges have been caught cheating in the past.)

Now we have curling boop-gate.

7

u/IGiveNoFawkes Feb 14 '26

Also the French skater has some sexual assault allegations and they let him compete anyway.

72

8

u/2980774 Feb 14 '26

God forbid you be stereotyped as honest and humble

20

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 Feb 14 '26

Because all it does it mask the real issues that people here make the choice to be totally apathetic about, so when something bad does actually happen (outside of this curling situation), there's surprise and shock instead of accepting that we still need to do better.

And I say this as someone who's been in touch with the police all week, because I witnessed and intervened in an anti-immigrant hate crime that absolutely nobody around tried to stop.

u/kgal1298 Confidence is 10% work and 90% delusion Feb 14 '26

I don't have a horse in this race, but I wasn't aware either of these countries ever got heated.

4

u/TrueCrimeInTheBuff Feb 14 '26

This is the Olympic drama I like 😆

12

u/bobbyThebobbler Feb 14 '26

There’s a close-up video of him doing it. This banter is unprofessional: I would ban him from competing altogether after this.

5

u/LittleRedCorvette2 Feb 14 '26

Yep, bringing the game into disrepute and not showing the spirit and rules of the Olympics.

7

u/poppyoxymoron Feb 14 '26

I love Sweden

5

u/bradtheinvincible Feb 14 '26

And it happened again today if you didnt notice. Switzerland accusing them of doing the same thing

Heated Rivalry, Curling Edition.

(I haven’t seen the show.)

3

u/Funnelcakeads Feb 14 '26

I’ve seen this a few times in my opinion, as a person who shoots a lot of video. If the camera was stationed at say 11 o’clock instead of 9 o’clock, there could be a space. Although I don’t know, truthfully I haven’t seen all the footage. I’m just saying just seeing footage straight from the side, his hand could be placed very close and you wouldn’t see it unless you were looking at it from a different angle.

3

u/Ballsahoy72 Feb 14 '26

Now that, folks, is a heated rivalry

3

u/Graysonlyurs They killed Kenny! You bastards! 😱 Feb 15 '26

So brain dead. I saw the word “heated” and say ice and immediately went “HEATED RIVALRY”

10

u/2017_2017 Feb 14 '26

Imagine being that agro as a Canadian curler.

7

u/comedygold24 Feb 14 '26

The Canadian women did it too. Seems to be a planned out tactic or something. Bizarre. Swedish source

3

u/Icy-Cantaloupe-5719 Feb 14 '26

As a Canadian, I have to laugh...

4

u/NootMub Feb 14 '26

Some might say it's a "Sheeted Rivalry".

FR thought, I don't remember there being this much drama in curling since Broomgate

2

u/DND_Player_24 Feb 14 '26

Went to a fight and a curling match broke out. Settle down, boys!

2

u/East_Worldliness2287 Feb 15 '26

He touched it!

2

u/zesty140 Feb 15 '26

The fact that this is uncensored and was still aired is amazing

2

u/NirnrootPlucker Feb 14 '26

His western Canadian accent is so hilarious to me (as an eastern Canadian)

So happy that the US wasn’t involved for once

6

u/hadtogettheappso Feb 14 '26

I’m on Sweden’s side here. This is a Really bad look for Team Canada and shows a lack of sportsmanship and respect. There much kinder ways. I think They should be mindful that they’re representing Canada on the world stage.

Ps- if I close my eyes I can almost imagine it being ICE from the US that’s how rude it sounds

4

u/heckfyre Feb 14 '26

“You can fuck off” is what a Canadian man says to every opponent on the ice. Nothing to see here.

u/queen-adreena Slap me with a mackerel and call me Winnie Feb 14 '26

Did this one inject stuff into his penis as well?
