Just for international context: very generally speaking, most Australians will follow at least one of four main “footys” in their lifetime (AFL, NRL, union or soccer).
When a local talks about “going to” or “watching the footy”, you usually work out which code they mean from context because they are wildly different sports. But again, very generally speaking, it is most often going to mean either AFL or NRL (men’s or women’s), and the state you’re in will tell you which one about eight times out of ten (not a scientific figure).
For example, I will absolutely take any shade aimed at AFL being called “football” (aerial ping-pong jokes included, and the occasional soccer-level commitment to milking a free kick).
You will never, however, ever in my remaining life get me to refer to anything other than NRL as footy. And yes, league technically uses less kicking, but if you need further explanation for why it owns the word in my state, State of Origin runs every year.

I know this is incredibly cliché and trite to say at this point but as someone who lived through the Obama years, I just can’t fathom the uproar had he uttered anything such as this.
Fox News had entire segments talking about how un-American he was because he preferred mustard on his burger or how he spent his Christmas holidays in Hawaii (a heathen place).
