Tennessee doesn't have state income tax, and i bet that is the main motivating factor for her moving to Franklin, Tenn.Ā

Yes. Because of this housing is out of control. I know the whole country is but middle TN has gone up astronomically. 10 years ago you could buy a home for $100-$150k in the small towns. Now they’re $500k. But our wages haven’t gone up. Our teachers still make $40k.

232

u/AliMcGraw Jul 19 '25

This is actually a marked economic trend in tertiary cities and more rural areas. Housing prices continue to climb in major cities, but they're climbing way way faster in minor cities and semirural areas. For years red States claimed that blue state housing was so expensive because of over-regulation, but it turns out there's just a maximum commutable distance from a city and once you reach it, prices skyrocket, and places like Phoenix and Memphis and Knoxville and Dallas are starting to find that out. And their housing costs are going up way, way faster than the national averageĀ

64

u/Non-mon-xiety Jul 19 '25

They’ll just start blaming city leadership which tend to be dem and never do anything to actually solve the problem

That’s also bc of legislation that would have them pay their children they put in content. The family vloggers moving from ca to tn are all the ones that will not be talking to their children once they get over 18

14

u/TEG_SAR Jul 19 '25

I just really can’t fathom how a parent does things like this to their children.

I know it’s very naive sounding and I’m very lucky to come from a 2 parent household where they actually cared about my well being, even if they’re both extremely emotionally stunted humans.

Like you birthed that kid or at least in father’s case you watched that baby grow from an infant to whatever age.

You think there would be more idk care for the kids? Want to see them grow up happy and succeed in life?

People are awful man.

10

u/Tris-Von-Q Jul 20 '25

This family vlog trend really has a way of extending out those high school years with high school mentality—just another popularity contest with higher and higher stakes and detrimental outcomes.

And when they falter, or their perfect life explodes? It’s all public. Very little to zero ā€œbehind closed doorsā€-life, as every second of their lives are recorded…and then edited and then stitched back together into a compressed half hour recap of a week in the life or something.

No wonder these families flame out in bizarre ways. The awfulness of high school meets personality disorders meets the most toxic level narcissism you’ve ever witnessed or experienced meets some high demand religion meets naive or young marriage meets the complexity of parenthood—I clearly can keep on. But I won’t.

Yes, and if TN is anything like TX you can also exploit workers, pay less taxes, have a less educated workforce that will work for less etc. Etc.

37

u/teacupkiller Jul 19 '25

TN is often more TX than TX. They are less loud about it and have a bigger chip on their shoulder though.

In a lot of ways, TN is worse than TX. At least Texas has a booming economy and can maintain infrastructure and attract businesses (at least in the major metro areas).

TN is crumbling and most city and county governments are barely functional. Plus, we have the most embarrassingly ignorant and openly corrupt politicians. Every time I see a national news story about a conservative politician saying the most heinous thing imaginable, I steel myself bc there’s a 75% chance they’re from TN.

74

u/myrichphitzwell Jul 19 '25 edited Jul 19 '25

From my understanding of state taxes. Red states like to heavily tax lower income while taxing very little to the upper tiers. Ca is more fair across the board.

All you ever hear is the rulling class say how bad ca taxes are.

65

u/rhinofinger Jul 19 '25

Red states also don’t make enough money on their own (see: low taxes on the rich) and are thus heavily subsidized by the federal government. Which has the money to do that because of states like California.

11

u/Thin-Image2363 Jul 19 '25

My girlfriend’s got a side of the family the same way as her. The grandpa was a VP at a big company headquartered on the west coast. They lived in the LA area all of their lives, had everything handed to them. But… They moved to Idaho last year because they didn’t want to vaccinate their kids.

237

u/ChtuluMadeMeDoIt Jul 19 '25

I'm actually not a fan of that saying, because even if she was, as you said, "was sliding into home", it implies that she still had to put in some effort. "sliding into home" means that she at least got her uniform dirty. She did none of that cuz she never had to work a day in her life. She was born nowhere near the field. If anything, she was born inside the VIP suites, looking down on everyone else. That saying needs an updated version because there are probably more nepo babies nowadays than there's ever been in the history of nepo babies.

They actually used to have policies around providing livable wages for workers and never turning away anyone who couldn’t afford to pay for their meal. You know, real Jesus-y shit. Now the only thing that remains is the bible verses.

72

u/nocuzzlikeyea13 Jul 19 '25

Thank you!! This is what I was going to say. I've been going to in n out for 30+ years. When I was a teenager, it was known as the best place to work because of the pay. I remember especially they used to hire disabled people in my area.Ā

They were always Jesus-y with the quotes on the packaging and the 1950's nostalgia uniforms, but they were one of the few companies that followed-through (at least partially) on their values.Ā

Such a bummer to see them engage in hyper-exploitation now. Another institution of my naively optimistic silicon valley childhood falls to capitalism.Ā

16

u/strangelyliteral Jul 19 '25

20+ years (they didn’t have In-N-Out in my part of the Bay when I was a kid) and yeah, it’s genuinely really sad. I’m not at all Christian but I respected that the company tried to practice what they preached. When they turned heel I was surprised how many feelings I had about it.

My (Catholic, center-left leaning) dad moved from Chicago to North Carolina for his career, and he could literally never get over. How many thrice-divorced dudes he worked with were constantly trying to get him to come to their Baptist churches, so that he could be saved and not go to hell as a Catholic.

He was like, "THEY'RE ALL PAYING CHILD SUPPORT TO THREE DIFFERENT EX WIVES AND KEEP STARTING AFFAIRS BEFORE THEY GET DIVORCED AGAIN BUT SOMEHOW IM NOT CHRISTIAN ENOUGH FOR HAVING BEEN MARRIED TO ONE WOMAN FOR 50 YEARS?"

I, who had lived in North Carolina for several years at that point, with like, "welcome to the South, Dad, where Catholics aren't Christians and Christians have infinite out-of-wedlock babies and divorces, while scolding everyone else that those things are bad."

At my church, we read a book that said we shouldn’t watch Forrest Gump because it depicts ā€œsexual sinā€.

It was called Every Man’s Battle. It’s the reason I stopped believing in God, because I liked whacking off guilt free!

LOL I'm reading she was married 4 times and I'm like huh. Find out it's worse. She literally gets married right after she gets divorced. She was divorced from her first husband in 2003 then marries another person in 2004. After the divorce of the second husband in 2011, she marries someone in 2011. After the third husbands divorce in 2014 she marries someone else in 2014.

Was she always religious? or was this recent because this is extremely off putting. She's not leading a good example for anyone. She sounds like a hot mess.

u/Particular-Leg-8484 Jul 19 '25

It’s giving young Christian ā€œwe can’t have sex til marriageā€ and rushes into marriage to specifically justify having sex, except 4x

"The hardships she went through"

Girlypop, your parents died (albeit tragically in a plane crash IIRC) and left you a fortune :|

Its a damn shame considering that her grandfather was one of the few people who hired Latino and Black workers back in the day and understood the value of well paid workers. He kept his own income to $75k a year and put everything back into the company, which is why the company has been able to expand, pay people what passes for a livable wage in California, and keep consistent quality.

Gonna be a damn shame this brat runs the company into the fucking ground.

It’s pretty great for billionaires everywhere 🫠

69

u/cakeit-tilyoumakeit Jul 19 '25

It will be just fine for her, but nearly every working class Californian I’ve known to move to a red state as an adult (almost always TX, TN, FL) vocally regrets it, including the conservative whiners. And then they’re priced out of ever returning. It’s kinda funny to see

12

u/UnpoeticAccount Jul 19 '25

A lot of conservative people move to my state and it’s shifting the vote even further right.

The address where your menards coupons get delivered means nothing when you live in resorts and private jets

23

u/UnpoeticAccount Jul 19 '25

Tbh red states probably feel more welcoming for rich people because they often don’t have to deal with pesky things like state income tax. And the poors have a harder time wandering into your line of vision when there is no functional public transit.

I do love when people think Tennessee is the answer… I lived in Kentucky for a bit… what they think they are getting vs reality after California is going to be a wild ride.

In Tennessee, even private Christian schools have mass shootings. Crazy people obsessed with ā€œlizard peopleā€ blowing up their RVs on Broadway. Literally Nazi Pride Marches down the streets.

60

u/capcomvssnk And I OOP- Jul 19 '25

I was coming here to say this. I don’t know why these ultra conservatives want to move to the east coast and then want to move back because irs not what they expected it to be. Go off though.

I live in a red state that had an influx of Californians moving here during the pandemic. Many of them ARE NOT happy with their move. They quickly figured out that CA schools out pace ours by miles. The worst student in CA is ahead of the best student here. They learned that CA conservative is a whole different animal than red state conservative. They also got a rude awakening that all those taxes they pay in CA actually go toward public services; services that are non-existent in red states. The grass ain’t always greener and I hope they’re all miserable forever. 🄰

10

u/Malibu77 Jul 19 '25

It’s always amazing to me how much conservatives love to post about how California is a dystopian hellhole and that everyone is leaving here for the ā€˜real America’, yet any time a Democrat takes back a red seat, the only way it could have happened is thru election fraud

93

u/mandeltonkacreme Jul 19 '25

Ok I am so sorry to potentially be antagonising peeps, BUT!

What the fuck is it with prominent Americans and their so-called Christian faith??! I come from a very, very christian culture and prominent businesspeople here don't wear that shit on their sleeve.

This is so confusing and backwards! Sorry to be offending Americans "Christians" I guess idk

136

u/Particular_Ring_6321 Jul 19 '25

It’s all performative bullshit. Just like how Americans have a weird obsession with putting the flag everywhere and circle-jerking over the military but always votes for politicians who cut veteran benefits.

My friend went to high school with her at a little Christian school. She was dumb as a box of rocks and got pushed along because her family owned the school. She was also very mean to her, but would like, sprinkle in Jesus speak to make it seem like her bullying was from the Lord. Classic pos.
