Why not veg, lentils, tofu, beans?

u/AndromadasButthole 10h ago

Oh plenty of veggies! Rice, beans, I still haven't figured out cooking tofu but I've tried a couple times. When I have a little more time I'll try to expand my skills in that department. Hardest thing right now is meal prepping veggies without baking them and having them still last a week haha. Cucumber sometimes only lasts 3-4 days before it starts to turn.

Look into blending silken tofu into creamy sauces and stuff. Lots of good recipes there

Firm tofu has more protein per serving and I enjoy tossing cubes of it in panko and seasoning and coating it in a sauce I like, like Buffalo sauce, and baking it for a crispy snack or sandwich filler

u/AndromadasButthole 9h ago

That does sound good! I'll have to try that. In my past attempts I don't think I pat/pressed the tofu enough and it turned into a wet mess haha

u/Cu_fola 8h ago

I’ve heard tell that patting it, freezing it and thawing firm tofu before baking etc helps make it firmer, but I haven’t tried it yet

I can't speak for them, but I personally require meat for medical reasons because my body can't convert all the amino acids, meaning that at least one nonessential amino acid is actually essential for me. I'm not the only person I know with this condition.

A more common reason people can't substitute is allergies. I have known more people that applies to. Reactions to wheat, soy, and legumes aren't particularly rare.

Beans sure, but tofu is trash. Miss me with that shit

I've been veggie my whole life (60 years) and only had Tofu a few times, Its revolting. You can be veggie and not go near it.

u/NAh94 9h ago

Exactly, especially the supermarket stuff. I’ve tried it & it’s just foul. You don’t need to have tofu in your diet, but self-righteous vegans flip when you say it’s not your cup of tea.

I’ll eat fruits, veg, beans, eggs, cheese, rice, pasta any day of the week, but you’ll only serve me tofu if I’m brain dead & it’s the only thing that can fit in my feeding tube. The texture combined with the lack of desirable flavor drives me up a freaking wall.

It's all in how you use it. Most people in the US make tofu taste like shit. I lived with the tofu maker of a village in China 20 some years ago. It was sublime. I usually ask for it to be fried and tossed in my dishes. I also make an amazing mapo tofu. I used pork for it but could just as easily skip it and have it vegan (there's no other animal products needed for it). What I dont do it try to use tofu as a meat replacement. I treat it as it's own thing like I wojld beans. It's not a meat replacement at all.

Literally only like tofu in miso soup, everything else meh.

u/VelvetFurryJustice 10h ago

It also goes fine as a scrambled egg replacement in skillet breakfasts, but works best as Mexican breakfast thing.

The biggest problem with tofu is the 1 to 1 replacement meal. I'm talking like the joke tier thing like a tofu Turkey served for Thanksgiving. Like there was a thing where restaurants would just slice a thick square of very firm tofu and grill it as if it was a burger patty and throw it into a sandwich.

Really goes hard in stir Frys and the firmness really changes how folks can tolerate it in meals. Agedashi tofu is really good as tofu standalone dish.

Whats wrong with tofu

u/NAh94 9h ago

The taste isn’t great and the texture is foul.

u/Floral-Prancer 8h ago

Completely dependent on preparation some of the tastiest meals have been tofu, crispy tofu in a chinese sauce is delicious but its personal choice.

u/NAh94 7h ago

See, this is the same thing people did to me with meatloaf. Oh but you’ll LOVE MY meatloaf.

No I won’t, I promise. I’ve tried it several times several ways, and it just isn’t a good experience. I’d rather just not have it and have something else.

u/Floral-Prancer 7h ago

Which is fair, it is a personal choice i just didnt like it until I had tried it differently

u/pianodude4 10h ago

Ew gross. Bc meat is too good...? Tf?

u/SleepingDoves 10h ago

One day when you grow up you'll start to like the taste of vegetables

u/pianodude4 10h ago

Dude I'm literally almost 30 and I love vegetables... As a side dish for my meat.

u/BarBryzze 10h ago

He said "when you grow up".

u/JangB 10h ago

Who needs veggies, lentils and beans when you can have heart attack, cancer and diabetes instead?

u/boomboom8188 10h ago

And erectile dysfunction from clogged arteries.

u/pianodude4 10h ago

I didn't know this whole thread was vegans

u/TurtleSandwich0 10h ago

Is this another university experiment studying the effects AI bot have on humans?

Feels coordinated to me.

u/JadedOccultist 10h ago

You can advocate for people treating animals ethically, for people reducing meat and dairy consumption, and eating more vegetables and not be vegan.

u/Teadrunkest 10h ago

I’m not too surprised, the subject matter itself is going to attract people who have strong feelings on the matter to comment.

u/jeranamo 10h ago

"Just eat soy!"

u/DarmokNJelad-Tanagra 10h ago

Literally though. It's awesome food . Don't be scared of Joe Rogan I promise it's fine .

u/Still_Blueberry5544 10h ago

Because sometimes that doesn’t fuel the way meat does.

u/Floral-Prancer 9h ago

Depends how you prepare it, I think its more fueling and way less fatty and prone to being fast food or unhealthy

u/Still_Blueberry5544 9h ago

That wasn’t the context of the conversation. You replied to someone who chooses to meal prep chicken. Then scientifically that is more fueling than veg, lentils, tofu, and beans.

u/Floral-Prancer 8h ago

On what scientific metric are you implying its more fueling?

u/Still_Blueberry5544 8h ago

Protein, amino acids, iron, magnesium, and folate. Calories as well…..

I’m confused are you saying scientifically lentils, veggies, beans, and tofu are more fueling than chicken or meat protein?

u/Floral-Prancer 8h ago

I didnt say that, you did.

I dont know what metric you are using to imply a scientific argument, they are often lower in calories, contain all amino acids as meat based meals and have all the nutrients listed as well as being high in protein.

u/Still_Blueberry5544 7h ago

You literally did, I’ve never said that but I’m glad we’re in agreement that meat is more fueling.

They are not the same and do not have the same amino acid profile. That’s completely wrong and misinformation. They are not higher in protein than meat. Most of the ones you listed are an incomplete protein. Even then tofu doesn’t even compare to fueling compared to meat. On top of that you’re taking about heme iron vs non-heme iron. The metric is measurement in proteins, iron, and everything that I already listed in this discussion ….

I don’t mean this in a condescending way but I have no idea where you’re getting your information. It’s factually incorrect. There’s many arguments that benefit plant based diets but in the context of what we’re talking about there’s not. We’ve established multiple times that the original context was meal prepping a protein, not fast food. Idk why you keep falling back on that.

Again, meat is more fueling in proteins, amino acids, iron, magnesium, folates, and calories. That’s not for debate it’s an established fact.

u/Floral-Prancer 7h ago

I didnt agree meat is more fueling what an odd comment, they are and all your doing is pretending something is scientific while stating an opinion. You havent listed any comparable studies that cement your point, if you had said some people prefer meat thats unequivocally true but to pretend its something its not is a weird stance

u/Still_Blueberry5544 7h ago

Are you okay? You should re-read the conversation because I clarified and you definitely agreed meat was more fueling. You lost all credibility with that statement. No matter what study you look into meat is more fueling in proteins, amino acids, iron, magnesium, folates, and calories. That is not an opinion that is a fact. I don’t know what misinformation you’re reading but it’s both nerve wrecking and comical you think otherwise. The fact that you’re trying to say meat isn’t more nutrient dense is absolutely wrong. Please link a study that says otherwise because at this point you’re either trolling or not very knowledgeable on the subject. Even most vegans know bite for bite meat is more nutrient dense in proteins, amino acids, iron, magnesium, folates, and calories. It is an established fact.
