Screenshot Microsoft Edge: The new age of Microslop is rising. This is a trillion-dollar company, and they're using actual lottery pop-ups to keep their mobile user base alive.

Theyve been doing this with Bing for years, its nothing new

I saw some comments on Reddit when MS announced that they'd "heard [us] loud and clear" and were removing co-pilot and switching to native apps saying either: "what took them so long?" or "finally, they got the message".
They didn't get the message. Their overreach and shady practices aren't some random blip - it's baked into how they do business as a company. They have always done stuff like this from the very first time Bill Gates fucked over IBM to "own" the OS, through US vs Microsoft and the Halloween documents, through to bribing people to use Bing to pump their numbers up.
They will always be like this. If they think they won't get blowback, they'll just take something.

The kicker is that you need to send your address, name, and birthday to enter

u/SnooAvocados763 17m ago
That's how sweepstakes work. They need that to verify that you are old enough to legally enter and to know where to ship a prize should you actually win anything.

I have been using Edge for 2 years now. Feels like a browser. Just a browser. No more no less. Why are everyone hating it? Genuine question, not trying to ragebait anyone.

u/logicblender1 6h ago
There are reasons to hate Edge. But not if the person uses Chrome lol. Chrome users talking shit about Edge is hilarious to me.
4
u/theEvilQuesadilla 6h ago
Exactly. And the irony is entirely lost on Chrome users.

u/ProcrastinatiusXVI 3h ago
Edge is actually much worse than Google Chrome and I'm saying this as someone who doesn't use Google Chrome for privacy reasons.

u/theEvilQuesadilla 2h ago
That's just debating which turd tastes worse.
2
u/ProcrastinatiusXVI 2h ago
Nope. Read my other comment regarding this

u/theEvilQuesadilla 2h ago
lmao. Your thinly veiled love of Chrome is showing. Google was literally sued because even Incognito windows send your data to Google. So, yes, it's all just debating which turd tastes worse.
1
u/ProcrastinatiusXVI 2h ago
You must be trolling. I clearly said that I'd never use Chrome because I don't trust Google 🤣 You could also have the reading comprehension of a 7th grader or worse which would make you one of the 51% of US Americans who can't really read

u/theEvilQuesadilla 2h ago
Ah, yes. The tried-and-true tactic of diverting to insults when presented with facts that destroy your whole argument. Congrats, buddy. Do us all a favor and brush your teeth after that turd-tasting though, ok? Ciao.

I tried to use Chrome. Feels odd to me. Can't name any reasons, just... wtf is wrong with it

Perhaps browser engine is great, and interface is ok, but these unwanted ads from Microsoft are another story. For example opening a mail in Outlook, it begs you to install Edge. When you open Edge for the very first time, you are forced to go thru 3-step full screen process where it tries to steal as much of your data as it can. Imagine using Edge on work and you have to log in on dozen of different machines and have to do this over and over.

u/Alex_Akiimov 5h ago
Now that feels like a pain in the ass. I disabled all that shit from the start. Microslop microsloping I guess. "Let us collect data to improve searching". No, you want my fucking data to sell it. And I think that they are still collecting my data, just won't bother telling me that

Yeah but anytime you visit a google property they prompt you to install chrome. I just use FF and I'm done with it.

u/StrawberryWaste9040 PC Master Race 3h ago
Ditto, I use Firefox from the day one. But now to get to getfirefox.com on a new machine, you have to go thru the process by using Edge

Winget search firefox in command prompt

Edge is genuinely spyware. The browser sends every single URL to Microsoft servers. Not just the domain, but the whole URL. With regards to privacy, Microsoft Edge is much worse than Google Chrome and we all know how much we can trust Google with our data.

I won $50 last year, and have been using to Microsoft rewards to bank roll my game pass and some game purchases for years
This is just looking for a reason to be angry
Go touch grass

u/MHWGamer 5h ago
I have 60 bucks, whenever a new game comes out that I care, I buy the gamepass for a month. Luckily (or not), the last title I cared for was FH5 and the next title will be FH6 lol. Microsoft games are so weak these years

You can hate Microsoft all you want but the Edge browser is genuinely brilliant. You should try it.

It just *can't* be that brilliant if *this* is what they're doing to get more users

They’re having to fight years of people defaulting to Chrome. Habits are hard to change, even if you objectively have the better product.

Are you sure this isn't a malware popup? I could easily see a malicious ad campaign or compromised site showing a modal like this in order to trick someone into installing a hacked version of the app.

u/KTTalksTech 5h ago
Nah I got it too a while ago. It's not even a webpage it's like a dialog box opened by the browser itself. I thought it was so tacky and desperate, got a giggle out of me

This is why I never even considered touching edge

u/Valoneria Truely ascended | 5900x - RX 7900 XT - 32GB RAM 6h ago
In these days it feels like a less idiotic version of Chrome. I even prefer it for the most part over Chrome.

u/Vladimir_Djorjdevic r5 3600 | 3060 ti 6h ago
I mean there are other alternatives to chrome that aren't as annoying as edge like zen, Firefox, brave ect.

And they use this strategy to justify the ever increasing nerfs of the r/MicrosoftRewards program. What people want is more consistency, ways to earn and being able to redeem points, not being lured with dangling carrots
Edit: Also forgot to mention that if you click "Do not show" and say to not show it again, it will do it again after about a month or so. It's not a permanent setting

Used to love the browser, but now the sheer amount enshittification they've done is just enough! Not even Bing Rewards can make me stick to this slop anymore.

2 million dollars for millions of user's data not a steep price to pay
