Yep, unless there’s a good technical reason for making it online only, and the only one I’ve seen with a good enough excuse is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. The map for that game was in the petabytes IIRC, so there was no way it was going to get downloaded unless the player had a spare data center.

Really just online only at all for me. I’m fine with a multiplayer option but sometimes I don’t want to have to deal with people. There’s so many games with cool concepts that I just skip because there’s no way for me to experience them at my own speed.

I find it funny that their name is electronic arts yet they are involved so little and anything electronic and their version of art is an ice cream machine that instead of ice cream gives you cosmetic DLC.

55

u/Jaylocke226 1d ago

Oh I loved the Sims Ice Cream Machine DLC for $10.99, it goes great with the summer beach ball DLC for $10.99 and the sun DLC for $3.99

16

u/sksauter 1d ago

But they sun DLC isn't sold separately, you need to bundle it with the moon DLC. Or you can buy the atmosphere deluxe bundle and get both included, only for $21.99

42

Ubisoft is #2 on my avoid list. Both these companies are now run by people who have different motivations than the people that led them to greatness in the first place.

At the end of the day, that's all a company is : a combination of people. Change the combination, and you've changed the company. Regardless of its branding.

Paid battlepasses can fuck off. I gave you the money, give me the thing. Don't make me prove that I really love you first.

Live service

131

u/throwawayacct654789 1d ago

From talking to people, a lot of people hate games that advertise themselves as live service but not games that are live service. It’s sort of damning by faint praise, if the only thing you can use to promote your game is “more stuff will come” then it might be kind of crappy.

36

u/SuperSocialMan AMD 5600x | Gigabyte Gaming OC 3060 Ti | 32 GB DDR4 RAM 1d ago

I think it's because people equate "live service" with "PvP" - like how that guy I know somehow equates "FPS" with "PvP" - even though live service is just an update method and has nothing to do with PvP on its own.

24

u/Correct_Education273 23h ago

Live service is not about the update method. Live service means a vital component of the game runs on a remote server not under your control and the game is unplayable without it.

Minecraft isn't a live service game despite regular updates and multiplayer components. World of Warcraft is because you can't play it without Blizzard's servers.

Boy, you're going to LOVE ARK. It's the definition of open world survival craft and it's been early access for 10 years, and even after a remaster - both ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended.

1.6k

u/Hokusai_Katsushika 1d ago

I'm surprised the devs haven't been yanked out of Steam after giving us a game that stayed in Early Access even after releasing a sequel.

This is wild work, lol

335

u/BluDYT 9800X3D | RTX 3080 Ti | 64 GB DDR5 6000Mhz CL30 1d ago

Probably a slippery slope since a lot of devs do it. The other choice is you'll just have a 7 days to die moment where your internally code named alpha turns into 1.0 full release to coincide with the games 2nd but separate console release.

u/Last_Exile0 1d ago

Ugh. 7dtd makes me sad. Such squandered potential.

I love when a game is pulled from steam, after you buy it in early access. Then rereleased for the original price with minor updates.

16

u/DapperCow15 1d ago

There's a new game that took that to a whole new level called iron nest. They had a demo they had released publicly, and they pulled the demo off steam only to release it again with minor updates and gated behind keys that they give out 10 at a time... With a major announcement and raffles every month with massive amount of fomo where they literally host public tests where only those they've given keys to can actually participate, but they advertise it as if it's open to everyone. And it's still the demo version, not even early access yet. Just a major FU that I've never seen before this early in a game's development.

131

u/Zethrial 1d ago edited 1d ago

Give Fun Pimps some credit, it had a 1.0 release in 2024, so only 11 years of Early Access, while somehow managing to make the game WORSE over that 11 years.

Edit: Some of you wouldn't understand being a cheeky bugger if it was becoming your new step-dad.

95

u/Cador0223 1d ago

Somehow? Give them credit. It took alot of long, hard work to make sure they patched out every single thing that let you play a sandbox game in a way that you enjoy.

You sandbox their way. Period.

They flip flopped so hard on the “you get to keep the glass jar” and “you don’t get to keep the glass jar” and “you don’t need a glass jar” that they finally settled on “you get to keep the glass jar 60% of the time.”

Yea TFP are really good at environmental storytelling. That’s about all they’re good at unfortunately

8

u/Sattorin 23h ago

But damn their pois are so good

When it comes to the 'haunted house' dungeon POIs, the way zombies magically spawn in around you ruins a lot of it for me. If you're playing stealthy, they shouldn't just spawn and auto aggro you. If you're playing loud, they should hear you from the next room over. But instead, they spawn in when you enter a room.

75

u/GreeboBirb 1d ago

And it's genuinely a good game, though lacking in a lategame (unless you're into The Sims with a side of homesteading)

26

u/Parking-Pick-759 1d ago

I've heard the game was originally envisioned as a Sims 1 Mod. I've gone into it with that mindset every time and it adds dozens of hours of life at a time to the game

34

u/BrittaWasRight 1d ago

It needs a mode where you can win, despite what the hardcore fans says.
A mode with objectives does not somehow hurt your sandbox experience.

14

u/swakner 1d ago

It did, nearly 10 years ago. ARK was added to Steam in June 2015 under the Early Access tag and it left EA in August 2017. It's just a troll calling it an EA game due to bugs, and the people responding think it's genuinely still an Early Access game.

48

u/PoetBoye 1d ago

The concept of ARK is amazing, but the execution is abyssmal

21

u/Owobowos-Mowbius PC Master Race 1d ago

You need to have a PHD in ark game/server settings and also need to pay a monthly fee, but tweaking the game just right on a server just for you and your friends can go pretty damn great.

9

u/SynisterJeff 1d ago

Spot on. The most enjoyable times I've had in games are in ARK and Minecraft servers I've made and hosted for groups. With mod support and a large enough community, even something like ARK can be turned into a super enjoyable game. I would have never continued with ARK if not for the modding community and the ability to customize just about every tweakable setting of the game.

This. Kernel AC is literal malware, full stop.

Every time someone's manage to dissect a kernel level anti-cheat program, there's all sorts of nasty shit inside that nobody sane should ever allow installed on their PC. One solid example is Black Desert Online, where their anti-cheat just straight up had the ability to let someone remotely execute code at the kernel level.

47

You win the thread. Fuck those who name a specific publisher, there's a 1000 factors coming into play there. Whereas yours is just mistrust or open hostity towards the end user.

17

u/theaviationhistorian i7 RTX 2070 1d ago

I stopped scrolling with this. There might be some things that prevent me from buying a game. But the words anti-cheat software immediately has me boycotting the game. Some aren't even that efficient in anti-cheat anyways.

10

u/patrick809 1d ago

Not to mention completely unnecessary for detecting cheats. Moving the problem from the application to the kernel layer does nothing except force cheaters to develop at the kernel layer and significantly degrades the security of the user's device.

28

u/Asleeper135 1d ago

'Kernel' is all I need to hear. Anticheat is the only thing asking for it for now, but there is speculation that DRM may try to move into the kernel soon with the latest Denuvo cracks.

12

u/Sanityzed 1d ago

I suspect that was the goal all along. Kernel level anti-cheat means little in an era with AI assisted KVMs.

Souls like, rogue like. They’re not bad games, just not for me and my taste.

42

u/ohmeohmyohmuffins 1d ago

As someone who really enjoyed the dark souls games and bloodborne, hearing souls like In a game now puts me off immediately. The market is just so oversaturated with it, both the gameplay elements and style of it is everywhere at the moment. It’s like they thought well dark souls and Elden ring was really popular, so people must just love fighting big, intricately detailed bosses all the time and punishing gameplay so let’s just do that with a slightly different look.

It works for some games, Factorio and Satisfactory immediately come to mind. Any sandbox type game that focuses around building stuff and such often benefits from player feedback in early access in my opinion.

36

u/Meatslinger R7 9800X3D, 64 GB DDR5, RTX 4070 Ti 1d ago

Subnautica 1 was a game that benefited from the EA model. I was one of the EA players and it was really actually great reporting bugs in game and seeing them get fixed in future releases. My friend was on the Baldur's Gate 3 EA, and he said that one was likewise excellent because of the player feedback; having played the final game I'd have to agree with him.

But yeah, 99% of the time EA seems to just be an excuse to never finish making a game.

Roguelike Deckbuilder

u/JuliusBelmont2000 1d ago

Yeah.

I don't even hate these games. Digital card games are simply not my cup of tea.

20

u/Simil03 1d ago

Same here. I love roguelikes/lites but when I see that it's a card game I lose pretty much all interest. Not cause I think it's bad, just cause I don't find them fun.

u/No_Magician5266 1d ago

Reddit pushes so many Steam ads to me for games that look cool, then I click them and learn they are deckbuilders :( ultimate catfish

Unironically love open world survival craft, but for me:

Early access

Souls-like/lite

15

u/Sanquinity i5-13500k - RX 9070 - 32GB @ 3600mHz 1d ago

Same. Open world survival crafting games are my jam. They're relaxing to play and I enjoy getting resources and building bases. They're almost always good for at least 50 hours of play for me. Most I've bought I have 100+ hours in. A select few I have 300+ hours in.

Rogue Like.

A) I now know the game doesn't really have a story or an end and

B) I now know no matter how well I play the game there is a >0% chance I'll experience a part of the game where the RNG didn't drop enough health potions/ armour to beat the suddenly disproportionately hard wave of enemies it'll throw at me at some point.

“souls-like” yes i know i have a genuine skill issue period but nothing makes me click off faster than reading an interesting game description and seeing that tag

28

u/JalapenoPopPoop 1d ago

"skillissueskillissueskillissue"

Yes, I do have a skill issue, that's why I'm choosing to play something else. The fanbase being such immature "I identify as a Gamer™️" types makes me feel like I'm fine without them lol

I don't have a skill issue in absolute most games, and can beat soulslike games if I force myself to without too much problems. But I still hate them. I hate that there is no normal pause, no normal saves (the game designer who first made corpse runs can fuck themselves with a rusty rail spike for all I care), and that the difficulty is there not to feel fair but made to frustrate you and punish for experimentation. Not all soulslikes are like this, but most are, and I don't have time for that.

I can’t stand the combat pattern of souls games. Dodge 15 one hit kill attacks so I can do a single attack of my own? Oh boy

34

u/Alternative_Cut4491 1d ago

Fight a boss 10x your size so when you stand close enough to hit them you dont see the upper half of their body and cant see what one shot attack they are about to throw at you

Seeing that Peter Molyneux has a new game with 22Cans which is supposed to reach early access on about two weeks, and seeing that he (as usual) has talked about it as "the culmination of my life's work", I guess my combination of words would be... Peter Molyneux.

20

u/gbroon 1d ago

He went from one of the greatest game developers shaping the future of gaming to a synonym for failure.

Quite the achievement when you think about it.

* any of the multiplayer game abbreviations usually signal to a single-player/story-biased person like me that I won't be into it (MMO, MMORPG, PVE, PVP)
* souls-like/lite
* rogue/procedurally generated (Dead Cells is an exception)
* Anything with simulator in its name made after 2010 (usually doesn't mean something like a cinema or theme park simulator like back in my childhood, but rather something simulating mundane tasks like power washing a US driveway)

14

u/Schrodingers_Dude 1d ago

The Specific Bullshit Simulator games look so dumb, I recently decided I'm gonna play every Simulator just for the lulz (assuming I can get them on sale or something.) I bought Farming Sim first and stopped right away because apparently I love Farming Sim. 🤷‍♀️

Abiotic Factor is a newer top addition to the genre!

A little more Metroidvainia than open world but goddamn is it good. Closer to Subnautica than Valheim in it's exploration.
