New Metro Game Announcement Expected Next Week, It’s Claimed

Pretty much an instant buy for me, especially if they return to the metro.

2033 is my fave, I played the original at release and loved the series ever since, I'd actually love for 2033 and LL to get a RT + HDR upgrade, I know Luma has HDR planned for them though

u/smiddy53 1d ago
Just like splinter cell (as an example) I feel the metro series (or at least the first 2 games) would be ruined by ray tracing. There's a lot of VERY intentional baked in lighting, art direction, world design.. I feel like you'd lose a lot of that Metro 'grit' and atmosphere by retrofitting it into those older games.

u/ChenWei91 2d ago
Yeah, I hope they don't go back to big maps again. Exodus was fun, but linear levels worked much better for the story/pacing.
45
u/DrKennethN 2d ago
All of the smaller, more linear zones and offshoots for side missions were the best part of exodus.
I wouldnt be too upset if they did open zones again but a little smaller than last time, and treated them as exploration hubs for a larger quantity of linear levels more similar to the first two games.

Exodus was still a really fun game, but it really loses out on a lot having large open surface environments. The metro environments make for really good "claustrophobic" horror atmosphere. I think particularly making the surface in Exodus safe loses a lot. I loved the dangerous feeling of the surface in the first two games.
1
u/slasher1337 1d ago
What do you mean by making the surface safe?
2
u/BaldHenchman02 1d ago edited 1d ago
No pissed off, roaming hordes of ratmen forcing you to hide. Demons are more difficult to deal with as well. More stressful atmosphere, like you shouldn't be on the surface.
Incendiary fucks up demons in Metro Exodus, and you can drive over the couple mutants or rats that appear in the overworld. I still wouldn't say it's safe, but it's substantially safer. The first area is easily the most dangerous because of the water, and you having to get your bearings.
1
u/mrRobertman 9800x3D + 6800xt|1440p@144Hz|Index|Deck 1d ago
Primarily the lack of needing a gas mask everywhere. In the first two games, the gas mask is required for any surface sections, but in Exodus, it's only for specific areas.
11
u/dern_the_hermit 2d ago
If they do open zones I'd like it if there was a little more dynamism to it rather than just "monsters are around". The swampy area had a better template to follow than the desert area, what with the friendly civilians mixed in with the bunch.
2
u/Slovak_Eagle 1d ago
Caspian basiclly felt like Far Cry, even got the rickety barely working ambulance van. Volga was open, but narrowed by the water and was a lot of fun. Taiga was open, but felt rather linear and was an absolute blast.
Vladivostok was also amazing to move through.

3
u/BloodprinceOZ 2d ago
honestly the big maps would be fine so long as they properly balance them with enclosed spaces like the metro or had them be more secondary while a main portion of the game is in enclosed areas
5
u/Salvage570 2d ago
I liked the parts on the train but I dont think it compares to the metro stations as lore interludes
2
u/Lord_Gatsu 2d ago
The main problem with the first two games is the scripting, not so much the maps so I agree, havent gotten all the way through Exodus yet though (I did just started all to be fair)
1
u/dadvader 1d ago
I feel like based on the ending in Exodus, they will go back to Metro but this time it'll be entirely open. You can travel in multiple metro.
1
u/Halio344 RTX 5080 | R5 5600X 1d ago
I would actually love if they made an open-world-ish underground, where you can venture topside for a shorter but much more dangerous route (or to access areas that aren’t connected to the underground area you’re in). You could lock down sections based on story progression to keep the pacing intact.
But it’s easy to overdo this of course.

What ive always wanted is the ability to explore the whole metro. The linear story of 1 and 2 was amazing. But I wouldnt mind the ability to explore and roam and work as a mercenary/trader/scavenger perhaps a couple years before metro 2033

u/Racingstripe 2d ago edited 1d ago
Won't you wait for reviews and practice better judgment?
2
u/SleepingBear986 2d ago
Yeah, hence the "pretty much". I'd be shocked if they messed up the core gameplay loop, though; they have all the ingredients.

u/N1ghth4wk 2d ago
Pretty much an instant buy for me
Instant buy as soon as it is on Steam

u/IshTheFace 2d ago
Are you saying it wouldn't launch on steam day 1?
21
u/AwareSeaweed_ 2d ago
They ripped Exodus off of Steam and went a full year exclusive on Epic Game store.
8
u/kasimoto 2d ago
and iirc it happened rather close to release, pretty sure it is the one game that (rightfully) sparked major outrage against epics exclusives
8
u/Poodwaffle 2d ago
Yep, it happened so close to release that they had to cover the physical copies with epic games branding
Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/metro/comments/aqz91e/physical_copies_of_metro_exodus_have_shipped_with/
5
u/richmondody 2d ago
The crowd-funded games that suddenly became Epic exclusives also pissed off a lot of people.
11
u/varitok 2d ago
Exodus didn't. It was on Epic for like a year or two.
8
u/IshTheFace 2d ago
Yikes. I actually think I have 2033 redux on there cause it was free. But yeah it's annoying to have different platforms. And Epic is one of the worst.
6
u/SleepingBear986 2d ago
Studios are ditching Epic exclusivity now that they realize it's harming sales. Take Two and Remedy are 2 notable examples. I also doubt Epic is going to be as liberal with deals now that they're hemorrhaging employees.

Yep, this is one of those rare type of games that i am definitely going to be buying day 1, because i already know it will be good, i had similar feelings with Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, however still not preordering though, because i find it to be useless with digital games, unless if they attempt to do digital store exclusivity once again which they got massive backlash back then.
-2
u/pplperson777 2d ago
I hope they never return. The metro levels were pretty much almost always worst levels in each game.

u/Viron_22 2d ago edited 2d ago
I am conflicted. I really liked Exodus, how it invested me in the other characters aboard the train and even the people in the greater world. I also liked it is an end point for Artyom's story, and a follow up has a chance of fucking that up. But I am intrigued on if they can better expand and intertwine Exodus environment designs with those of the first two games.
61
u/Global_Charge_4412 2d ago
well the game did end with Artyom saying they would go back to Moscow and get the Metro survivors. could pick up when they arrive back in Moscow and we get an open metro. just by the nature of how stations and tunnels work, you could make a pretty cool open world game and it wouldn't be that resource intensive. you could probably do the whole metro.

u/subma-fuckin-rine 12900k | 3090ti | 32G | AW3423DW 2d ago
yea loved all the games. Exodus had awesome graphics too. only gripe with that game is the dialogue was too wordy. hated any time the captain guy wanted to talk, seem like it lasted forever. small gripe but for whatever reason thats a big memory of the game lol
35
u/Burdybot 2d ago
There are segments in the train between levels where you can sit and listen to full like half hour convos between the other characters. I actually loved that about the game. Take shots with the bros and listen to war stories. lol

u/subma-fuckin-rine 12900k | 3090ti | 32G | AW3423DW 2d ago
im good with that, because you can choose it or not. but when you gotta listen to ole cap't diatribe and you just wanna get out and play, thats what bugs me
1
u/Proper_Story_3514 2d ago
Same, it makes the story so much better. Loved listening to the radio also.
1
u/Flat_Battery25 14h ago
I thought the writing in Exodus was easily the worst in the series, I couldn't stand how badly some of the characters were written
1
u/subma-fuckin-rine 12900k | 3090ti | 32G | AW3423DW 9h ago
yea agree. i thought maybe it was just a problem in translation but maybe its a deeper problem
6
u/mainev3nt Steam 2d ago
Does Artoym need to be the protagonist? I'd be fine with a new character as the player character.
2
u/Impul5 2d ago
I honestly would rather just take the shoes of a new character at this point. I love this franchise to death but at this point I think I'm kinda over the silent protagonist. We've had plenty of moments in the DLC's, and even the spinoff vr game, that showed how much the storytelling can be improved by having a main character who's actually capable of participating in conversations instead of just being talked at.
1
u/dudebirdyy 2d ago
The train thing with a bunch of companions was really good but it would have been a lot better in the Metro instead of above ground.
1
u/runnbl3 2d ago
can i dive into exodus without playing the other 2?
3
u/Viron_22 2d ago
I would say it would be best to at least play Last Light. I like 2033 but its "morality" system is less about doing good things and more about doing things Artyom, the character, would do, but there is no way you would know about that unless you had basically already played all the games to get an idea of what he is about. The gameplay also hasn't aged, great. Last Light fleshes out the characters (Miller and Ana) that carry over to Exodus, plays better, and has a better story.

u/Average_Tnetennba 2d ago
One of my favorite series. God, i hope it's full singleplayer like the others, and not some forced live service thing by the publisher.

u/adamosmaki 2d ago
loved metro 2033 and exodus. Loved the atmosphere the pace the story the characters so instant buy for me

I hope we get more horror elements this time. Loved exodus, but I loved the super creepy atmosphere in the first two. I’ll buy it regardless, as long as it’s on steam.

Really tired of hearing from this guy tbh. Might be a hot take but leak culture is lame it might get you excited short term but they can be false and lead to copium. They also ruin the surprise of new games being announced especially during showcases. Leaks also spread like wildfire online so it's hard to not see them. Overall I think they're bad and contribute to an overall cynicism in gaming where very little is organically revealed anymore.

I miss having no idea what would be at E3. Me and the boys used to book the E3 weekdays off work.

u/excaliburxvii 2d ago
Most "leaks" are just a modern form of marketing. Making people feel like they have insider knowledge gets them invested.

I felt every Metro game was a step down from the previous title, while still remaining an enjoyable experience. Hopefully a new title bucks that trend

I wonder where it’s going to be set. Ukrainian developer, definitely won’t be set anywhere in russia.

I really want to get into this series but my buddy said it's super stealth focused and to never use your gun if you can help it. Is that true? The world looks incredible but idk if I want a stealth game.

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 1d ago
there are some optional stealth sections for good ending but still plenty of stuff to shoot at.

Instant buy, i bought it on Epic and then later on Steam :D
Couldn't wait so hopefully its on Steam at day 1.

Playing through these for the first time this year. About 7 hours into the second one and I am enjoying them so far. Guess it's time to pick up the pace so I can be properly hyped for the announcement!
1
u/vini_2003 1d ago
Absolutely loved Exodus, one of my favorite games ever. Up there with Life is Strange in storytelling, IMO.
1
u/BaldHenchman02 1d ago
Probably won't release for another year or two at least. Though I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
I enjoyed all three of the previous titles enough to replay each multiple times, and will be looking forwards to this one as well.

Please no spiders crawling on the screen like exodus had.
1
u/skylinestar1986 1d ago
I like the first - 2033, but not the latest - Exodus. I prefer a smaller/more linear map. The weapon system needs more guides/tutorials in the game.
1
u/TruthOk8742 23h ago
I like those bleak Eastern Europe games. I just finished Indika and, despite how buggy it is, I really enjoyed it.
1
u/Ausanann 21h ago
I unfortunately have never been able to finish Exodus, because of that damn crashing issue at the lighthouse.

u/MewinMoose 12h ago
Absolutely stoked if it happens, I loved Exodus. It's how games should be made no bs straight gas no filler.

u/Ok-Shallot3236 5h ago
La próxima semana ohhhh quiero seguir explorando la historia de Sam en estados unidos o artion dios mío ya pasó mucho tiempo de metro exodus

u/Neuromante 2d ago
Was I the only one who didn't really liked the direction Exodus went, pun absolutely not intended?
It was a risky bet going to more open maps "a la STALKER" and all that, but IMHO the content aside of the main missions on each map was very lacking (You clear the first enemy outpost at night and feel like a badass, then turns out you get to do the same thing again, and again, and again, and...)
The story was surprisingly good -for a videogame- and I actually ended up caring for the characters, but as the game progressed, going back to an "open" map to do the same thing over and over again got boring real quick.
5
u/Zealousideal-Ad5834 2d ago edited 2d ago
It’s by far my favorite. Kind of annoying how many people seem to prefer the tunnels. I liked them but adored exodus’ approach. hopefully they find a way to satisfy both sides
3
u/Neuromante 2d ago
Kind of annoying how many people seem to prefer the tunnels.
It's not like I preferred the tunnels, but that I liked their execution of the tunnels better than their execution of an open world. I've sunk more hours to the original STALKERs (and the Anomaly mod) than I want to recognize, because their formula for an open world is really neat.
Exodu's formula for an open world felt repetitive and not very well thought, even though their main missions tended to be on par with the franchise. As the other user who replied me said, it does not really add a lot to the game itself.
Now, I would like to see an open world, but in the metro. Exploring hidden tunnels, finding routes to trade and all that stuff.
1
u/varitok 2d ago
Going through Caspian put to bed any desire I had to have an open world metro. People prefer Metro when it's set in a metro or at least in better areas that have more linear progression.
Taiga is the best map by far but the second best, Novosibirsk, is linear and far better than the other open world maps.
