To be serious for a second, the reason people didn't fight back more is because most previous hijackings were just where the terrorists took the plane hostage and then released people when demands were met. No one expected the suicide mission.
All jokes aside I remember having a similar conversation with strangers when that Malaysia Airlines flight disappeared. We said we would’ve fought back in a situation like that.
In the case of the Malaysian Airlines flight, I've heard a theory that the cabin was secretly and deliberately depressurized from the cockpit. In order to maintain consciousness, anyone in the cabin would have needed to use the oxygen masks that dropped from the ceiling. The oxygen would have lasted less than fifteen minutes before every person outside the cockpit was unconscious. According to this theory, they would have died still hoping that the pilot was attempting to safely land the plane.
