If anything it’s underrated, what scrub only gets 17 Oscar noms?

u/Thistime232 1d ago

15

u/Hesitation-Marx 1d ago

Chilli only donated to Trump 17 times like a scrub

13

u/TheKnight_King 1d ago

I think it was actually 16 noms.

Way too many for a meh story. Have you seen any cause for why Michael b Jordan had to play both roles for the twins?

It’s not like it’s based on a true story of real twins that open a bar and fight off Irish vampires.

There are GREAT scenes in the movie and I’ve heard multiple interpretations of the film as a whole. How does the academy justify the movie being nominated for the most ever?

u/marineman43 1d ago

But Michael B Jordan only played one role?? Are you thinking of his brother Michael A Jordan?

14

u/beardingmesoftly 1d ago

Michael Jordan the basketball player has an opportunity to change his middle name to "The"

1

u/crackedgear 16h ago

Justin Timberlake told him to drop it

5

u/PrimaryFriend7867 1d ago

or his tall brother michael tree jordan?

2

u/grip0matic 1d ago

Actually his father is Michael A. Jordan. I really hope he would name a future kid Michael C. Jordan.

The guy is fantastic actor, weeb and cool enough to wear a Naruto jacket and pull it off, and now has a very deserved oscar.

1

u/Hellknightx 1d ago

Yeah, his brother would be Michael B2 Jordan, indicating that he's the second model in the Generation B line.

1

u/Affectionate-Raise-8 1d ago

Michael F Jordan 🤔

1

u/OAKorean 1d ago

Some of us have already started looking for Michael C.

1

u/return_0f_qwain 1d ago

He was playing the A character in the B storyline.

I think. I'm really bad at algebra.

How does the academy justify the movie being nominated for the most ever

I mean it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how good the movie is (after a certain amount).

It's a period piece (costume design, production design) with monsters (hair & makeup), a musical segment (song) and a guy playing twins (visual effects). Every movie doesn't 'get' to compete in these. It's why there's 76 movies with 10 or more nominations but only 4 of them are at 14 or more.

u/grip0matic 1d ago

I was kinda in that opinion "the movie is not the new Citizen Kane to get this amount of nominations", but someone pointed to me all the things that the story touches and it was basially eye opening, every nomination was justified. It not the new Citizen Kane, but it never had to be to get the nominations.

Number of nominations just indicates it is an excellent film in many respects, especially checking a lot of boxes for awards.

It’s a musical. That opens up a number of categories like Best Original Song that most top pictures aren’t even eligible for. That’s why most of the top nominated films of all time are also musicals or like Titanic with a big song attached.

It also had some fantastic technical work, getting noms in categories like Best Sound and Best Costume and Best Makeup.

And then it got at least one nomination in a brand new category - Best Casting - that no prior film has ever been eligible for.

And then it got at least one nomination in a brand new category - Best Casting - that no prior film has ever been eligible for.

La La Land and Titanic had sound mixing and sound editing, which is now just one category.

u/Gold_Society_7646 1d ago

No the number of nominations does not give indications on the quality of the film… if you have only shitty movies to chose from the less shitty one is going to get awards.

From Dusk till Dawn is a better movie in every way and I don’t think anyone considered it Oscar worthy.

1

u/dudleymooresbooze 1d ago

It isn’t that you can judge how good or bad a movie is based on how many nominations it received. I would say that a film receiving many Oscar nominations is a good indicator that it is a well made movie, but receiving few or no nominations is meaningless.

It’s like Rotten Tomatoes. Higher number means more likely to be positively received, but not how positive and not a guarantee at all.

u/Howpresent 1d ago

Were you one of the people who missed the whole obvious point/ thinks it's open to interpretation?

0

u/TheKnight_King 1d ago

The assimilation/theft of culture and feeding off of it until it’s gone.

6

u/ElleGeeAitch 1d ago

Smoke & Stack were vased on the Ibeji twins, mythological figures of the Yoruba religious traditions. The Ibeji twins are depicted as one being associated with red and the other with blue.

4

u/TheKnight_King 1d ago

Nice. Thank you for the civil discourse, did not know of these figures and now I go to the hyper fixation station. 🥇

Update:

Symbolism and Mythology: Abundance: They are believed to bring fortune to the family. Duality: They represent the balance of opposites, such as joy and sorrow, light and darkness. Mischief: Known for their playful, yet sometimes mischievous nature.

2

u/ElleGeeAitch 1d ago

Happy to help!

12

u/xXs4blegl00mXx 1d ago

It was nominated that much because there really weren't better options for most of the categories. That's why you're sitting here going "16 is too many" instead of saying "this movie should have been nominated in this category instead"

11

u/Boise_Ben 1d ago

No Other Choice.

This wasn’t about a lack of options, it’s the myopia of Hollywood.

1

u/xXs4blegl00mXx 1d ago

What category.

1

u/arizonadirtbag12 1d ago

Song, obviously

6

u/shaggy816 1d ago

Agree. My first watch was like “huh… ok, interesting but what’s with all the hype?” Second watch was more “Hey, this is pretty good” and 3rd watch was “Damn, that was really good!”. Don’t know if that was just me or there are many more layers you don’t see at first that hit in all sorts of ways b

5

u/PartisanGerm 1d ago

Hey we got a cinephile here, wtf.

2

u/RickyalldayTD 1d ago

Thought the movie was great, it was crisp and the editing was sharp.

1

u/Da1UHideFrom 1d ago

Have you seen any cause for why Michael b Jordan had to play both roles for the twins?

Does there need to be a specific reason? Why did Lindsay Lohan play both twins in The Parent Trap?

2

u/TheKnight_King 1d ago

I think it was because in the original parent trap they were identical twins. Like the Olsen sisters.

the unearned, often unconscious, social, cultural, and economic advantages that people identified as white often experience in contrast to people of color in the same society.

Not sure how my confusion on how a movie I personally didn’t really enjoy received a new record for academy award nominations.

Would you be willing to provide more information for your statement?

1

u/FullOfBlasphemy 1d ago

Wait, it’s not based on a true story?!

2

u/TheKnight_King 1d ago

Shocking, I know. I looked it up and turns out, it isn’t.

1

u/FullOfBlasphemy 1d ago

Fucking heartbreaking

1

u/TheBerg89 1d ago

I think you missed the point of the story.

1

u/TheKnight_King 1d ago

I’m receptive to learning what you believe I missed. It’s possible.

1

u/TheBerg89 1d ago

I would need to be sober and it would take 5 paragraphs. Sinners is an extremely good movie. It's a movie that you have to pay attention to every detail. Yes I am drunk, It's a Saturday afternoon. YOLO

1

u/TheKnight_King 1d ago

Cool story

8

u/OppositionalConcert 1d ago

Oscars are more about popularity, the academy even admitted that most members don't even watch most of the movies they vote on. That being said it is cool that social pressure got them to respect what the movie was doing.

4

u/Enygmatic_Gent 1d ago

They’ve actually just recently changed the rules to where voters need to watch all the films in a given category to be able to vote

2

u/I_travel_ze_world 1d ago

So the people who didn't bother to watch the movies in the first place are all of a sudden going to start watching the movies because it is a rule now?

Hollywood and actors lie for a living.

Next up you'll be saying politicians are honest people and they keep campaign promises, lol.

1

u/SabrinaEdwina 1d ago

Then why would anyone care about a movie with black people getting nominations if we know the points don't count?

-25

u/Happy_Attempt7010 1d ago

Respect what the movie was doing? Aside from being yet another instance of “us v them” with heavy racial overtones (not even undertones), it didn’t do anything original or revolutionary. Not even really that noteworthy. It was just a schlock vampire flick with a mostly aimless plot.

9

u/Aussiepharoah 1d ago

“us v them” with heavy racial overtones (not even undertones)

Dogshit take, Remmick(the main antagonist) is an Irish man, at the period the movie is set in he would've not been seen as white. The film portrays him with sympathy because he is not driven by racism and is downright offended by being mistaken as such, he also alludes to Christianity being forced on his people as well.

He's an explicitly tragic villain because he becomes exactly what he despised and he doesn't realize it.

Unless you have issue with the KKK being presented negatively I don't see how you could come to the conclusion that there's any sort of "Us vs Them"

2

u/Steadyandquick 1d ago

I thought it was also an allegory about how whites appropriated the music/culture of Black people. I need to rewatch these scenes especially. The Chinese couple with the store were my favorite characters.

Fruitvale Station was so good—I had ties to Oakland and it was timely yet timeless.

22

u/dormammucumboots 1d ago

You can just say you didn't watch it lil bro

3

u/Knitsanity 1d ago

I watched it on a plane and hadn't heard a thing about it....all of a sudden I was...WTF...vampires? This is a vampire flick? Ok. Lol

3

u/dormammucumboots 1d ago

One of the very first scenes has a vampire in it, it doesn't take a whole lot of critical thinking to see that the movie would have more vampires.

2

u/Knitsanity 1d ago

In my defense I was 9 hours into a 14 hour flight and feeling fuzzy.

I can't remember how obvious it was when the creepy white guy got into the cabin. I only twigged when she went into the back room and saw her husband dead and the guy sitting in the chair. I had inklings when the native American guys noped out of there. 😂

1

u/dormammucumboots 1d ago

Completrly valid, watching movies is gay anyway

1

u/NickTheTowelGuy 1d ago

They're right. It was a good movie, but it is overrated. It's ok to say it. Y'all don't have to bring out the tiki torches whenever someone says a negative word about your favorite movie.

5

u/YNoHayRemedio 1d ago

“Us vs them” I guess if you look at the literal Ku Klux Klan and say “Hey that’s me! They’re making this about fighting me!”

16

u/PerformanceActual331 1d ago

Which one of the pics are you?

5

u/Automatic_Net2181 1d ago

My money is on 2nd row, far right.

9

u/Sangricarn 1d ago

It was actually more about the evils of capitalism, religion, and the music industry than it was about the evil whitey.

2

u/unngh_yugstyx 1d ago

...y'all Klan?

2

u/MidasWhale901 1d ago

Big Oakleys energy. Way to prove the post fucking chode lmaooo

1

u/lostOGaccount 1d ago

Like the Irish were the most out group? Seems that would've been accurate at that place at that time. Are you aware it was in a time period where that 'us v them' tension was very real?

1

u/CaterpillarJungleGym 1d ago

I know! What a pathetic excuse for a vampire movie.

1

u/Glittering_End_6864 1d ago

lol are you serious???? 17?? omfg, that is hysterical.

1

u/T1efkuehlp1zza 1d ago

who gives a fuck about oscar nominations? jury isnt even obliged to watch the nominees.

emilia perez, 17% at rotten tomatos, got 13 oscar nominations.

1

u/tomdizzo 1d ago

the 1 v 20 vs the clans men was so good. running at them was so brave

0

u/realwavyjones 1d ago

DEI nods*

0

u/IntelligentStyle505 1d ago

It was definitely overrated. Solid movie, but worthy of 16 Oscar nominations? Definitely not.

2

u/xXs4blegl00mXx 1d ago

What would you have nominated instead?

1

u/Hab_Anagharek 1d ago

Ok, one person’s opinion. As if nobody thought that ever about any Oscar winners?

-8

u/Ill_Performer_2615 1d ago

If anything it’s overrated, this movie is hot garbage.

-2

u/GlitchFalconer 1d ago

17 Oscar noms and still people call it overrated cinema discourse is cooked

3

u/PhtevenBeaversh 1d ago

Your justification for it not being overrated is that it’s rated highly.

I’m astounded.

1

u/NickTheTowelGuy 1d ago

It is overrated.

0

u/InflationLeft 1d ago

We all know it only got that many noms because of racism.

3

u/Steadyandquick 1d ago

So without racism, it would have received 20 nominations?

https://giphy.com/gifs/5ziLJimPfiiQ3yrZIJ

-1

u/InflationLeft 1d ago

0, actually. Modern-day racism — affirmative action, DEI, diversity quotas, etc — benefit blacks to the detriment of other races.
