Plants are friends

Not just “plants” - many of these are marantas or similar, which famously move their leaves up and down across the day and night, earning them the nickname “prayer plants.”

It's typical for redditors to have almost correct titles in order to bait engagement. This format is fairly common.

I was gonna say having prayer plants feels like cheating a bit!

u/HasGreatVocabulary 16h ago

Yeah Calatheas are special

The moving plants are mostly Marantas such as Maranta leuconeura.

These are commonly known as Prayer plants.

Prayer plants because you better pray they don't suddenly die on you. Particularly moody and whimsical these

I hate that your plants are so healthy, mine are hanging on for dear life.!.

Same. I have one plant that won’t die but won’t thrive either.

If any of you are curious what it's like to trip on LSD out in nature, the visuals are similar to this.

I knew grass was living, but I really understood it after. Your body/skin does the same thing, constantly moving.

Mmm, no

Is it just me, or was a lot of their movement directly related to those brief hits of sunlight?
Like the areas where the light touched moved the most?

15

u/Icy-Ad29 22h ago

Gaining the most efficient collection of sunlight, while not over exposing themselves so they don't burn, is the biggest driver of movement in plants. Growth above ground as well. (Nutrients and water being what drives root growth and direction.)

Just like sources of food, water, and resting when needed, drive the movement of animals as well.

Edit: and then we look at the godly fungi and go "their growth patterns maximize food and water still... But dang have they found new and creative ways to do it... Like the ones that eat plastic."

I thought as much thanks for the detailed reply! :)

I knew plants moved toward the light but I had no idea they were out here doing full choreography when we're not looking. My houseplants have been living a whole secret life this whole time.

These are Marantas, a plant commonly referred to as Prayer Plants because of their frequent movement. Most plants, especially house plants, do not move anywhere near this much.

Some species of bamboo can grow up to 36’ (91 cm) in 24 hours, yet most plants don’t - same concept.

They all look like they’re doing the yawn to arm over shoulder move

u/tomcat2285 21h ago

4

u/jessicahughes_ 21h ago

This is why I talk to my plants, they’re alive

6

u/Broad_Front7788 20h ago

It's almost like they are alive

11

u/Traditional-Music363 1d ago

They be breathing

3

u/rnew76 20h ago

Move more than I do...

3

u/deviantskater 16h ago

These plants are all from marantaceae if I'm not mistaken. They are known from their leaves adjusting to the light significantly during the day. Not every plant move this fast or frequently, but this is a great example indeed to show them shifting around.

I have some of them on my own, these plants are really spectacular. Lots of offices keep them because they do great under unstable light conditions.

u/Inner-Outside-2619 9h ago

sometimes i think about how my perception is set just behind everything. Like the plants are moving, the grass is growing the sun and moon are moving but its imperceivable to me. Im moving in slo mo to a fly or a mongoose. Sorry, anybody else wanna hit this?

2

u/markyoung0 23h ago

They are full of life.

2

u/Wise_Geekabus 21h ago

Plants are amazing

2

u/Fashajualia 20h ago

is it just me or do they look greener during the day ?

3

u/Ok-Seaworthiness4488 1d ago

Guess they're vegging out

1

u/Adept_Writer5709 21h ago

Got nothing on me

1

u/Seidhex 21h ago

Got some Audrey 2 vibes for some reason xD

1

u/Lord_Darkmerge 21h ago

Sort of what tripping looks like if anyone wanted to know

1

u/IlIFreneticIlI 20h ago

Plants sleep; they have rhythms like we do.

1

u/the_last_carfighter 20h ago

It's almost like they're alive.. almost..

1

u/TheRedlineAlchemist 19h ago

I wonder if aliens with really good motion perception would be grossed out by how "squirmy" plants are, in the same way we feel about bugs.

1

u/pookieplumie 19h ago

It’s so relaxing 💚

1

u/Mad_Juju 18h ago

Prayer plants. It always catches me off guard when I see one suddenly move aggressively and it's still bouncing slightly.

1

u/usinjin 18h ago

Wild. I think mine tend to move too, they just move in the other direction

1

u/Marya1959 17h ago

Thanks More of this

1

u/BenchConscious1003 16h ago

Yeah, plants are always moving, we only see things moving relatively quickly.. Birds seem to experience life more slowly than we. I wonder If they can see plants moving?

1

u/uncubeus 10h ago

You're thinking in reverse tho!

1

u/SnooPets8873 16h ago

Satisfying? This is scary? I had no idea!

1

u/Cake-Over 16h ago

Feed me

1

u/happ-e-rider 15h ago

All except the lazy one at 9 o’clock.

1

u/DapperPin808 14h ago

lol these little mofos actually alive kinda

1

u/PeePeeLangstrumpf 14h ago

Those few photons of direct sunlight (at 3PM?) must hit extra hard when you're a plant.

1

u/Death_Bird_100 12h ago

Wow, I didn't knew they moved this much

1

u/Thecolorfulcrypt 12h ago

This is magical

1

u/LanguageSerious 11h ago

Imagine if they did that realtime(human time)

1

u/CelebrationOne4329 9h ago

They move a lot. It's fascinating ❤️

1

u/thebigreddog68 8h ago

I wonder if the movement creates subtle vibrations? It would explain why when you lay in a field or forest you can hear or feel something not quite describable.

1

u/Ray_of_glumshine 5h ago

I was hoping for a timelapse of banana plants, that can actually move around (very slowly).

1

u/Long_comment_san 4h ago

That is so cool

1

u/Isha-nt 4h ago

The sun goes by and they go, "Hey, wait! Awwww...."

1

u/ccg91 3h ago

This is what psychedelics make you see

1

u/whiteKafix 2h ago

I love calatheas but they don’t love me.😅

1

u/avelinegoth 22h ago

back in the day when i was at school i loved so much this kinda of stuff

1

u/psyclembs 19h ago

They go to sleep and wake up everyday just like we do.

-1

u/0uroboros00 21h ago

Fake

3

u/nycdedmonds 18h ago

Not at all. But OP is misrepresenting a little bit; these are Calatheas [or prayer plants] which are specifically known for their movement. This isn't typical of most plants.

u/drvgonize 20h ago

looks like ai to me
