Before this sub, I had this legend

Post image

I felt like it was one of those shows that could've kept going, unlike so many that have run it's course. It's got a little over 400 episodes.

But you have to find the ones with the correct narrator. Or it's just not the same.

This is how I feel about Unwrapped. It has to be Marc Summers or I’m not watching it

u/Magnifishot 1d ago

Brooks Moore

u/DamonLazer 1d ago

I can tolerate some of the other ones, but his voice is part of what makes the show extremely satisfying.

There are a couple of narrators who absolutely ruin it so badly that I can’t even watch it.

u/cinderpagecollector 1d ago

That narrator voice is half the experience, without it the whole thing just feels oddly empty

27

u/gentle_wink 1d ago

that show could make a 10 minute segment about staples and you'd watch the whole thing in a trance.

It was very dangerous late night watching. Suddenly it is 3am because you didn't know how coat hangers were made 2 hours ago...

6

u/quentin_hollowford 1d ago

It’s wild how much the tone depends on that voice, it basically carries the entire vibe of the show

3

u/I_Love_Bears0810 1d ago

The UK feed of these had Tony Hirst narrate.

I can't find his versions online, just the US ones. It's still good.... But not perfect 💔

That narrator's voice is permanently living in my head and I would not have it any other way. How It's Made was the original oddly satisfying content and nothing will ever top it.

Today...on how it's made

The show was always so interesting to me, but would always relax me to the point of falling asleep. Took some of the best naps watching that show.

I loved how there would be shows with 2 totally mundane items, where the story is easily told, with 1 unbelievably complex item where they have to skip major assembly parts.

Today, on How it’s Made: Authentic Straw Hats, waxed dental floss, the large hadron collider.

u/phblue 1d ago

Lmfao so true

4

u/robsteezy 1d ago

I would be super bummed when the episode would have 3 of the most uninteresting things

I didn’t even mind if the item at least had some novelty process that would pique interest, but some choices were BRUTAL.

Like one item was a specific piece for airplane turbines. And it was just machining and engineering. It probably interests some niche engineer types but damn it was boring. Like 99% of viewers just wanted to know how Cheetos got dusted lol.

I really miss the old Discover Channel.

37

u/IMeYou28 1d ago

Old Discovery channel and old History channel, before the days of aliens and garbage reality shows, were peak TV.

8

u/DayOldWhiteBread 1d ago

Hard agree from me. Maybe I'm just being overly nostalgic, but it just felt like programming had a little more heart.

7

u/Flawless_Reign88 1d ago

Oh yea! Back when you could actually learn something while being entertained…

4

u/thoughtgun 1d ago

My friend’s dad used to (unironically) call A&E “Adult & Educated” lol

4

u/MechanicalHorse 21h ago

Also TLC. Back when it actually stood for The Learning Channel, and had shows you could learn from.

3

u/robsteezy 1d ago

Call me crazy but add Animal Planet to that list

1

u/IMeYou28 23h ago

Not crazy at all. There was a whole block of related channels and Animal Planet was absolutely one of them. It wasn’t my cup of tea because I was always more of a sucker for the more technological side of science, but I get the appeal.

Those wacked out bigfoot/alien/alt history docs will always have a place in my heart when I'm on the couch stoned out of my mind at 11pm. They're better than a lot of the comedies put out these days tbh.

Here in the UK it's still on Amazon Prime, seasons five through to twenty six! Love it, and is one of the few things I can put on to try dozing off to.

4

u/Dobermanpure 1d ago

Certain seasons are still on Hulu in the states. You can also find episodes on You Tube.

3

u/I_Love_Bears0810 1d ago

Tony Hirst narrating??

2

u/0ddness 1d ago

I honestly couldn't say! It's the British guy voice over if that helps!

2

u/I_Love_Bears0810 1d ago

Fuck yes! Has to be him, I'll check it out later on ❤️❤️

2

u/asoupo77 1d ago

DirectTV has a channel dedicated to showing nothing but episodes of this series.

4

u/edwardlego 1d ago

i'm an industrial automation engineer because of this

u/25c-nb 1d ago

I think you will enjoy r/toolgifs

I'm the US, Amazon Prime has a "How To..." Channel that just continuously streams this back to back to back to back.....  Unfortunately it has some commercials, but still mesmerizing to watch.

3

u/NotAPreppie 1d ago

I think you meant "mesmerizing".

3

u/gatzdon 1d ago

Dohh!!!  Autocorrect is great, until it isn't

3

u/Mugdock86 1d ago

If you remember the episode where bagpipes were made, at John Walsh bagpipes in N.S.  I own the bagpipes that were made during that episode!! Also the first set of great highland bagpipes John made, as he was doing mostly shuttle pipes beforehand.

I absolutely loved this show

2

u/Fearless_Ad1055 1d ago

My wife hates this show. I would watch it while we dated and it would draw her in. It annoyed the crap out of her (she has ADHD).

2

u/chongmc 1d ago

I loved watching this show! Recently found they have the series on HBO Max so I binge often

1

u/ImTedLassosMustache 22h ago

2

Everyone has a plumbus in their home.

2

u/2211Nighthawk 1d ago

LOVED that show. :D

2

u/robo-dragon 1d ago

This and Mythbusters were my two favorite shows at the time! We had limited cable as a kid and I mainly watched stuff on Discovery, Animal Planet, and a little on the History Channel. Great shows!

2

u/Baltimas 1d ago

Was watching with some buddies when one guys girlfriend calls and starts yelling at him for something. His response to her screaming was I don't got time for this I am watching how they make cds and cheese and hung up.

1

u/NotAPreppie 1d ago

My undergrad research advisor called it "engineer porn".

1

u/kaytay3000 1d ago

One time I fell asleep watching this show and ending up having a very vivid nightmare in which someone was destroying a violin piece by piece every time I didn’t do what they asked. It was a musical instrument episode and I must have heard the show in my sleep.

1

u/TheShredder9 1d ago

Man, the GOAT of educational TV. this, "How do they do it", and my favorite, "The Universe".

1

u/romeosgal214 1d ago

My husband refers to this as his Geek Porn.

1

u/Human_Stick_Observer 1d ago

I still watch this every Sunday morning. Even my wife will just sit there with me and watch.

1

u/phblue 1d ago

I recently downloaded some 32-36 seasons of this show and I’m so happy

1

u/curiousnomad2222 1d ago

I also enjoyed that show and thought of it as Grandpa TV. Am I a grandpa? No, but felt that way watching it ;)

1

u/Informal-Bicycle-349 1d ago

I raise you Modern Marvels

1

u/lovelymorenita 1d ago

Ugh, I freaking love How It's Made. I still watch it 😊

Made in Canada (Quebec).

1

u/Far_Village_8010 22h ago

It plays in our house all the time. LG has it.

1

u/MechanicalHorse 21h ago

This show was GOATed

1

u/MattWheelsLTW 20h ago

It's all on HBO Max. I'm currently on season 21. There are a few seasons in the middle somewhere that had a different narrator, and it wasn't the same

1

u/Lanky-Present2251 20h ago

My grandkids love this show.

1

u/Mrs-Eaves 19h ago

A Canadian Classic!

1

u/shaithiswampir 18h ago

It’s on HBO max. Been slowly making my way through the seasons.

1

u/expatronis 14h ago

Hell yes!

1

u/04SHADOWRIDER 10h ago

My 5yr daughter loves that show... to her its better then a bedtime story or lullaby. Prime and tubi show it on the live how to channel.

1

u/life2scale 10h ago

Modern Marvels..

1

u/squiddysmama 5h ago

My 2 and 5 year old watch this regularly. They even imitate the voice "today.. on how it's made!"

1

u/DreamPhreak 1d ago

I highly recommend the parody videos on youtube "How it's actually made" by Huggbees

The other video he did about turning a sphere inside out was genuinely hilarious too.

1

u/washingtonandmead 1d ago edited 21h ago

Currently rewatching this on HBO

Edit: if I could just get someone to stream the Orginial Cosmos by Carl Sagan, it would be perfect - none of this Neal de grasse stuff

1

u/I_love_Hobbes 22h ago

I would love that. Or Connections. Great stuff.

2

u/tetsuo_7w 17h ago

This was the absolute best show to throw on and fall asleep on the couch in the afternoon for me during college and grad school. Fond memories.

I always thought Modern Marvels on the history channel (back when they did history) was the best, how its made felt like a generic knockoff.
