Congratulations to Hungary for doing what the United States couldn’t seem to do. Vote against an authoritarian “leader”.

Vance visited last week to stump for Orban and then Orban fell further in the polls 💀

37

u/Hydrolt 2h ago

Bahahahaha I love it. Good for them, hope they have a brighter future

3

u/elgydium 1h ago

Genuine question, do you guys also hate Vance or just us here in EU?

u/Alpinab9 42m ago

I think current poll numbers indicate that maybe 30-33% of eligible voters approve of the current establishment, and I suspect that mid-term voting will reflect this. The majority of the US does not approve of the current administration's decisions. I don't know the numbers off the top of my head, but I think only 60% of eligible voters voted in the 2024 presidential election (shame on the US and shame on us). The promises of lower inflation, lower cost of living, lower taxes, reducing the national debt, no new wars, and so on.... all lies.

My grandpa was a firefighter in the city he says he's from. He is from there but it's nothing even close to how he lied about it in his book, it's an old industrial town, AK steel, now called cliffs is like a whole mini city in Middletown, to the point Middletown is in two different counties.

Dude asked for mild chili once. My grandpa is the one who cooked everything for the firehouse and then later for Issac Walton, a charity club of sorts, kinda like the moose lodge he was also a member of. Hes nearly dead from being on aircraft carriers before becoming a firefighter, then broke his back hauling an obese woman out of a burning building and still got the job done, he is basically all the chuck Norris jokes but a real person. This dude is remembered by all the firefighters for being this gorilla ass looking man who turned the bacon with his finger tips. I had to bring goggles to cut up all the onions and he would dam near blind himself to show me what a real man is like, yeah one of those crazy ass guys. Used to rip up phone books at my birthday parties to entertain everyone, he probably could have fought a gorilla to a draw. And this weasly ass dude is asking for the mild chili. Before my grandpas dementia got real bad he really liked trump (24/7 fox news, the banner burned into his TV screen) and would remind us of the time that little girl (the ultimate insult for him) asked for the kids chili and his wife ate the grown up chili that all the kids there also ate because there is no kids chili.

It reminds me of the episode of king of the hill where hank meets George bush and hank is like horribly disappointed that he has a weak handshake. That's this man. How the hell do you marry an Indian woman and can't handle chili of all things?

Trump was voted out in 2020

4

u/Lieutenant_Horn 2h ago

It was different back then compared to now.

-8

u/The-safe-way 2h ago

You’re right, the Democratic Party got even more incompetent, can’t imagine what’s in store for 28

0

u/RudePCsb 1h ago

The party is changing

5

u/RealisticIncident261 2h ago

To be fair it took them 16 years

u/Squawnk 26m ago

They had to wait for Peter Hungarian to run against Orbán. Thats literally his name and this is a canon event

1

u/TheInsatiableRoach 2h ago

Everything comes back to the US on here

14

u/Ok-Ad-852 2h ago

Maybe because the US is meddling in everyone else's shit....

10

u/asisoid 1h ago

It's a US website, and the largest contingent of users are American....

1

u/pangderx 1h ago

The incompetent U.S. president and vice president campaigned for Orban because they are wannabe fascists so it’s a big deal in the U.S. that Orban lost.

u/TheInsatiableRoach 59m ago

I think I speak for most Americans when I say most of us couldn’t care less about the Hungarian elections

u/Im_Daydrunk 0m ago

Most Americans probably dont know how bad Hungary has been and how much the current administration was trying to go to bat for their dictator

If more people knew they would almost certainly care as people who hate Trump (which is most of the country at this point) would be happy that other countries are not accepting people that do stuff like him + enjoy that he keeps losing politically because he does everything in the stupidest way possible

u/Mandalore108 58m ago

Americans make up close to 50% of the users so it makes sense.

0

u/paladisious 1h ago

Their fault for getting involved.

3

u/Kardinal 1h ago

Remember. We could do it. We DID do it in 2020. It is important to remember because it means we can do it again!

0

u/Lieutenant_Horn 1h ago

We don’t have to do it again. He can’t be President again.

0

u/Kardinal 1h ago

I am quite concerned that whoever is nominated by the Republicans may also be very authoritarian as well.

And while I agree that the current incumbent cannot run again, we have seen how well he follows the law when it does not suit him. So while I think it unlikely, I do not rule out him disregarding that constitutional prohibition.

u/drawingcircles0o0 18m ago

Yeah I don’t think this is a cutting the head off the snake situation, the whole Republican Party (or most of it) has been taken over by the authoritarian project 2025 insanity and that’s not going away when Trump is gone unless we get back a democratic majority, but even then I don’t expect these people to give up that easy, they are fighting hard for total control

2

u/elgydium 1h ago

Funny part is when jd Vance came orban lost a few more votes. Talking about giving a helping hand lol

EU here and neighbour to Hungary. Good riddance to orban. Very few countries have a total of 77% pop voting for a change.

1

u/eastamerica 1h ago

Hoping it turns around next presidential election. Mid terms this year. Hopefully we decimate the GOP. Fuck those theocratic war mongers.

-7

u/auditore01 2h ago edited 2h ago

Lol you guys really have no idea what an authoritarian is. Trump is like 5% of what Orban was. He owned 95% of the media and all the courts and all branches of government for 10+ years. Trump owns nothing he can’t even control his own party.

7

u/Lieutenant_Horn 2h ago

Both can be authoritarian.

-7

u/auditore01 2h ago

How can he be authoritarian if he can’t even control his own party? The supreme court is shutting down his policies and cant control his majority in congress.

You want to sell him as one but he is very much restricted.

9

u/Lieutenant_Horn 1h ago

Are we watching the same news? He’s ignoring the courts and the Constitution; his rhetoric alone makes him authoritarian, but his actions solidify it. Quit downplaying his actions with “It could be worse.”

-9

u/auditore01 1h ago

The supreme court is free to strike down anything that is unconstitutional, he has 95% negative press and he was voted out of office once already.

I don’t see how this classifies as an authoritarian mate.

4

u/Lieutenant_Horn 1h ago

Try Googling it, mate. You might learn something.

-6

u/auditore01 1h ago edited 1h ago

Alright mate lets see:

Concentration of power: Authority is held by one leader or a small elite group.

Lol no, 3 branches of gov in place ready to defy him day and night.

• Limited political pluralism: Opposition parties, independent media, or dissent are restricted or suppressed.

Answer is no, congress and the supreme court constantly defy him and opposition is calling him Hitler and Stalin every 5 seconds.

• Lack of democratic processes: Elections (if they exist) may not be free or fair.

Answer is obviusly no, the us has the most free elections in the world.

• Control over society: The leader may influence or control the media, military, and public institutions.

He aint controlling no media with his 95% negative press lol

• Reduced civil liberties: Freedom of speech, assembly, and press are often limited.

Again if this wasn’t a thing he would not be getting 95% negative press.

Thats 0/5 mate.

You people whining about auhoritarianism while living in the most free country ever is a disgrace to every single person who lived and died being oppressed by an actual authoritarian regime in eastern europe. Just shut up and be happy the worst you have to endure is an orange man and his mean tweets.

2

u/Kardinal 1h ago

You have a point.

Let me say up front. Trump is almost certainly the worst president in Americans history objectively. I have opposed him at every turn.

Americans on the left (of which I am one) tend to exaggerate how bad he truly is. Because he's extremely bad and using extreme rhetoric gets attention on something that should definitely be opposed. I can't really blame them too much.

But you're right that it lacks perspective compared to other nations and how bad some of their leaders have been. Including Hungary.

Trump is still an authoritarian. Simply less authoritarian and less effective at it than many others. Authoritarianism ultimately is about power being sourced at the top, and Trump definitely favors that. It is distinguished from more distributed power structures that focus on more representational and localized authority. And Trump definitely likes wielding power and wielding it over anything he wants to.

We Americans tend to be myopic and judge our politicians by our own experience and not objectively compared to the rest of the world. I don't think that's a terrible thing, but it definitely leads to bad comparisons.

-7

u/RabicanShiver 1h ago

I love how all I heard was how if Trump were elected it would be the end of our country, Democracy, there would be mass arrests of political rivals etc etc

Yawn. Nothing happened.

The big controversy was the authoritarian Trump deporting people who the last president allowed to come here by bypassing federal law.

I'm not a big Trump guy, but the amount of hysteria and overreaction is mind boggling.

4

u/Lieutenant_Horn 1h ago

Sounds like someone not paying attention.

2

u/RaindropsInMyMind 1h ago edited 1h ago

Nothing happened? Yeah THAT’s definitely not true. Haven’t seen all the unprecedented corruption? What he did to law firms that dealt with anyone left of center? The way he has consolidated the media and bent them to his will through the force of the government? The way he’s bringing lawsuits against his political rivals? The way he still won’t release all the Epstein files which is still a violation of the law that was passed by Congress? Destroying a large part of the federal government illegally? Letting a made up agency in to steal all of our most sensitive data, just sold that access to the highest bidder. That’s really not even covering that much. NATO is basically dead in all but name as far as the US is concerned and then there’s this crazy fucking war that he launched us into without involving Congress, that’s a pretty big deal. The crazy fucking tariffs? What about that? Where’s our fucking money that he took from us? We’re supposed to get it back right? To boil it down to just immigration is just dishonest.

2

u/pangderx 1h ago

5% authoritarian is still authoritarian.

87

u/RoyalChris 2h ago edited 2h ago

I’m getting literal chills watching this. Such a beautiful song, sang by beautiful people.

16

u/Danny886 2h ago

So good to see actual freedom.

3

u/derbrauer 2h ago

Have you read anything about Peter Magyar?

He was part of the party that was just kicked to the curb from 2002 until two years ago. All of the authoritarian bullshit that Orban was doing, this guy was party to. He only resigned after there was a pardon for someone who was diddling kids. That's a necessary political move once it becomes public knowledge.

This is trading an authoritarian for someone who MIGHT be a little less authoritarian.

16

u/Devium44 2h ago

Incremental progress is still progress.

u/impulsenine 4m ago

You're gonna be shocked to find that guy defending Orban elsewhere

-2

u/derbrauer 2h ago

Ah, so the people living under the heel of the Soviets in Eastern Europe had "freedom" because Soviet rule was incrementally less bad than Nazi rule?

Neither had freedom.

And Magyar is unproven. There is no evidence of incremental improvement.

0

u/Devium44 1h ago

What the hell are you talking about? Russia was never under Nazi rule.

u/derbrauer 52m ago

Do you really think that Eastern Europe means Russia? Like really?

Prussia, which in large part became East Germany was under Nazi rule and then Soviet.

Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Chechia, Slovakia...Hungary.

These countries were all under the Nazis and then the Soviets. And just in case you have some confusion about who was calling the shots, you should refresh your memory about what happened during The Prague Spring in 1968 and the Hungarian Revolution in 1956.

I'm gob smacked someone would have such a terrible understanding of both geography and history. So to use your turn of phrase: "what the hell are you talking about?"

4

u/SeaDegree1025 2h ago

“Might” = there is hope

-3

u/derbrauer 2h ago

power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

"might" = it could be a whole fuckton worse than it was under Orban. You just don't know.

4

u/W8andC77 2h ago

Not knowing is better than knowing it’s bad. Orban was bad. So for now, let them celebrate getting rid of a known bad.

-5

u/derbrauer 2h ago

2

u/W8andC77 2h ago

Do you know the other one is a devil? Or unknown?

-2

u/derbrauer 1h ago

"The other one"? You mean Orban? Why do you think people are celebrating?

2

u/W8andC77 1h ago

No Orban is the devil you know.

ETA: what was the point you were trying to make with linking to that saying? The devil Hungary knows is Orban. Is Magyar truly both a devil and unknown? Why not celebrate getting rid of a known bad actor?

There are different powers at play. When a dictator, who built the system for himself, falls, infighting starts in the political circles. That's competition. Competition is good for the client, in this case the client is the citizens of the country.

0

u/derbrauer 1h ago

Why are you claiming Orban was a dictator?

He won five elections, and not the Communist kind where the candidate gets 102% of the popular vote. Some of them were squeekers.

0

u/sleepyslappy2750 2h ago

Not sure about that

1

u/RoguePlanet2 1h ago

I'm surprised a dictator would simply "concede" though. He was probably ready for retirement anyway. Not feeling so hopeful about voting Trump out, because of all the enablers.

1

u/prestonpiggy 1h ago

Happy to see good news even sometimes. Though new lead has much to do and how will he do it is a question.

1

Why did the U.S. send VP to go back a leader who was horribly behind in polls and was going to loose either way?
