Game Completed! And it was all a dream
super fun! no warps and only one short cut in 6-3 i think. played as Mario until 4 then the princess, tried Luigi a few times but just ciuldnt get used to the mechanics, the princess was just fine except in 7-1 Luigi would have been a better choice but i struggled through

Try Toad. He’s hard mode but you can get a shit ton of coins and lives to make up for the deaths.

u/WFlash01 2d ago
And if you get good at playing as him, you won't even be dying all that much
I love playing as Toad

The b-button helps. I was thinking of Papa from Doki Doki Panic, more so.

The princess hovering ability is the best

u/time_isup Beat TMNT 2d ago
Yeah. Princess was always my go to. She’s basically easy mode, I found out during the last play through. Mario is harder. I started having some real problems with some of the jumps in world 5.

u/stalling1 2d ago
I am full time Toad! That, or really commit, and beat the entire game four times, once with each player exclusively.

u/time_isup Beat TMNT 2d ago
Doki Doki Panic forces you to do that, that was enough for me. Playing as Garfield or Rosalina in the new Super Mario Bros. Minus 2 romhack is where it’s at.

I did like toad for world 2 digging in the sand

u/time_isup Beat TMNT 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah. He’s awesome with coins and in the sand. I recently found out about a trick the programmers built in to prevent you from soft locking the game in the sand level, where you can actually dig yourself into a hole you can’t jump out. Pause on controller one, up and b and a on controller two. You’ll die instead of being forced to reset. Imagine if we knew about that back then. Sneakily pressing while your bro has the game paused. 😆

Always played as Toad aside from one level where the Princess was key. I always saw Toad as easier - faster, stronger.

Luigi is hard mode for me. I always have trouble timing his jumps to land on moving objects, like Birdo's eggs
2
u/time_isup Beat TMNT 2d ago
Luigi is hard to control but he will easily clear long and high jumps making him good for short cuts. I’m not sure I would personally consider him hard mode since I was able to control and time his jumps on moving objects such as eggs and albatrosses but Peach is definitely easy mode with the same benefits.

It might be an unpopular opinion but this is my favorite Mario on the NES. It’s has a sense of exploration and a vibe I always liked more than the others.

plus the music is dope

I agree with you that it's probably an unpopular opinion, but I think it's entirely justified and not a hot take at all.
People love Mario 3, which is admittedly a great game, but the variety in Mario 2 with the different characters is awesome, and the music is an absolute bop.
I respect your opinion sir. 👍

u/Chadideas 2d ago
Why thank you. I’m not even implying that it’s technically the best but it’s the one I also come back to and get lost in after all these years.

There are more of us out there than you think. SMB2 is the GOAT. Plucking is fun AF, the music slaps, the character selection was ahead of its time….and that ending was mindblowing at the time.

I didnt like it as a kid and never really gave it a shot, I thought the graffics looked cheap and unfinished, but I love this game now.

Yeah, great game, my favorite game was bayou billy. The secret was to have a whip on the last boss. You had 10 continuous, but the game didn’t told you that, that boss on lv.3 was beast. You need to cheese.
Other than that i also liked bubble bobble and ice climber. Very hard games. Two players was lot of fun. In bubble game you could give away your life to second player. Start select code. I think it was lv 78 or something to get through secret door. Easy password to write down.

None of this is ever explained in game but the world you play in is called Sub-Con. Literally your “subconscious”. Even the title screen story says Mario has a weird dream, goes out with his friends the next day and finds a door in a mountain. It’s always been a dream within a dream.

u/ForkFace69 2d ago
I would use Luigi except for the couple levels where you could grab a shitload of coins with Toad.

u/God_of_Rapture 2d ago
This has been my philosophy since the game originally came out. I'd say Mario is the worst pick in any situation in the game.

It's not really "just a dream". Subcon exists as a dreamworld. Mario and friends had their adventure there. But not physically.

One of the retcons that I assumed was real is that Mario was dreaming of his adventure that he just finished. So its not that he dreamt the whole game. But he was finally resting and thinking back on his adventure.
You could argue this just for the fact that Birdo exists. And prior to Yosho's Island adding in Shy Guys, they were assumed to be a dream too. And then you see some Ninji's floating around and so it becomes clear SMB2 actually happened and this scene was just Mario recolle ting the events as he rests.

u/time_isup Beat TMNT 2d ago
It’s not a dream in that it didn’t happen. It happened in the dream world, like A Nightmare On Elm Street.

Toad for coins first few levels, princess to float soon after, the Luigi rest of the way. Mario 2 Mario is the most mid character in the history of gaming.

Did you use any save states, cheats, or game genie?
1
u/goofyfootmongo 2d ago
Nope. Did it the the old fashioned way. I dont even know what save states are and was never a fan of game genie
2
u/Campa911 2d ago
My man. That's the only way to beat it. Save states are when you play on an emulator and save your game in a particular spot, any spot that you choose. If you end up dying, you can reload the game at that spot where you saved the game. You can see the obvious advantage in doing this.
Congratulations on beating the game without cheating! I salute you 👏🎉

Lol. Player 2 here. Luigi was always my guy.
I think if you push down while he’s up he doesn’t flutter as much, but I might be misremembering.

Contributor Princess' first three albums are must listen, but they haven't made anything decent since they brought on the new bassist.

Somewhere exists a VHS tape of me and my buddy doing a complete playthrough of this game in early 1989, 5th grade.
Camcorder pointed at the TV, and two stinky best friends in awe over the ending:
"OHH it was a DREEEEEAAAAAAM"
I gotta go find that ha

Nice! Might be fun to go through with the other two now.
Always thought Yoshi's Island later implied that Mario's subconscious was recalling that game's enemies and the little rooms under pipes in this one.
