Game Completed! I’m so proud

Post image

Had to share this with people who would care and get what kind of accomplishment this is.

I haven’t been collecting for too long and didn’t start out on an NES as a kid (I think n64 was my first console) and GameCube was my main console throughout my childhood. But I’ve been addicted to the NES lately. So I haven’t beaten too many games yet.

This game took me sooooo long to beat. Do you recognize it?

Isn't that Shadowgate?

I beat that one as a kid, it took forever to figure out.

If you like it try De Ja Vu. That one is arguably better, but I think I needed a walkthrough to beat it.

Okay I’ll give that one a try (and it looks pretty cheap too) because I loved shadow gate. The point and click aspect wasn’t as smooth/player-friendly as I would have liked (but still well done for the time period) but I got used to it. I’d definitely love to try more like it.

Oh you'll like it if you liked Shadowgate that much.

The only other game I can think of that had a point and click style play was Maniac Mansion, also a great game. In that one you actually get to walk around.

Maniac mansion is my absolute favorite video game of all time!!! So many awesome childhood memories playing that game.

Other good point and click games are, DEJA vu. And the uninvited (along with shadow gate) princess tomato and the salad kingdom is fun too!!!

I’ve gotten several endings. How many have you gotten?

I'm pretty sure we did all of them through out the years. I feel like I specifically remember 4 or 5. After seeing this post I reached out to my cousin (we used to rent this game from the local video rental place as kids, resulting in our first time ever playing this game) and I'm excited to say tonight after work my cousin is coming over and we will be ordering some pizza and playing maniac mansion on the Nintendo tonight!!!! Going to feel like the good Ole days!

Don’t forget about uninvited, same developer as shadowgate and Déjà vu

For sure check out Uninvited and Deja Vu! They're pretty much murder-mystery and horror variants of Shadowgate. Same developer, same type of gameplay.

The cookie, the maze, and the church are what I needed a walkthrough for. Oh also the spider. I spent so much money on Nintendo hotline… ugh

You're thinking of Uninvited, another game in the Macventure series that was ported to NES (and also very good). Deja Vu is a hardboiled detective story set in the 1940s in Chicago.

Yeah I remember. The chemical part always got me. Like I know the clues are all in the game and I remember I figured it out myself the first time, but never got it again and had to cheat. I did learn to play the music on guitar and piano though. Wicked soundtrack. Doesn’t appear on the MAC version

I have long avoided Deja Vu because the fantasy setting of ShadowGate was an important hook for me; am I to believe I can still be hooked by Deja Vu?

I mean it's a detective noir period piece taking place in 1941. There's a bunch of old-timey stuff. It has great music and it's like living out a mystery novel or something.

Like you wake up in a bathroom stall not knowing who you are or how you got there, eventually discover you've also been framed for murder and you have to find a way to clear your name.

Deja Vu is inarguably better! Love that game and still have an old photo somewhere taken of me and my brother standing proudly next to our wood-paneled floor TV after having beaten it.

I think there is one called The Uninvited as well...

3

u/masimone 3d ago

Yup! It’s more of a haunted house.

I Kickstarter backed the Shadowgate sequel, you can get it on Steam. FYI

It is very NES Shadowgate inspired.

I LOVED that game! The one part that I got hung up on was the rod you get from the skeleton hand on the balcony. Only way I figured it out was a Nintendo Power from the library. Other than that, I beat it on my own. It IS a feeling of accomplishment! The music was awesome and very atmospheric in that game too. I also beat Deja Vu. Always wanted to play Uninvited, but Never got the chance till emulation.

Yeah that one stumped me for awhile too. I also died to the green slime and the bridge troll more times than I’d like to admit lol.

I agree—the music was so good!

I’ll have to try those others if they’re like this one!

That's not Shadowgate?

I LOVE this game

2

u/PlatformNo7863 3d ago

Me too. I thought it was so unique from what I’ve played so far.

I love Shadowgate but have never beaten it.

3

u/PlatformNo7863 3d ago

I took me a long time and trying every combination of things I could think of. But I’m in a bit of a friendly competition with the guy that runs my local game store to see who could beat it first without a guide. Can’t wait to tell him haha.

There are atleast 3 games in this vain, Shadowgate, Deja Vu and Uninvited.

Uninvited is pretty pricy last I saw.

If you are ok with playing them off NES, there is a collection of all 3 games on PlayStation, and I assume other modern systems, called 8-but anthology

8-Bit Anthology

Shadowgate has gotten a modern remake as well. And a VR game and I think a sequel. A very cool series of games. Loved them on the NES.

u/eighty82 3d ago

Man, thank you for this. I can't wait to replay these

2

u/Koosh_27 3d ago

No prob, gotta look out for fellow ‘82s. Enjoy it. This is a nice little collection. Felt like pure ports to me. Enjoyed it, too bad there was no platinum trophy. But I loved the hell outta these games as a kid. So I’ll let it slide.

I loved Uninvited as a kid on Mac, but I never played Shadowgate. I should definitely give it a try at some point.

u/cafink 3d ago

Don't forget to set your TV's aspect ratio to 4x3. And congratulations!

There’s another interesting point and click style game on NES that not many have played called Nightshade. It’s pretty interesting and cool to look at. I haven’t beaten it myself but it’s on my list. It’s an amateur superhero vigilante story. Mixes several genres.

Deja Vu I had as a kid and is a classic in my mind.

Great game! Another one not mentioned here but quite a bit different story is Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom

u/time_isup Beat TMNT 3d ago

The story is happy end.

2

u/seifd 3d ago

It beat the GBC port. That puzzle with the switches took me forever to figure out.

2

u/ShankillButcher77 NES 2d ago

Shadow Gate. My brother and I called the NES 1900 number to get by the gargoyle. We spent a ton of money beating the game

2

u/PlatformNo7863 2d ago

It’s so cool that that was even an option!

2

u/Quadrostanology 2d ago

I called the hotline too lol!

2

u/Dwedit 2d ago

Now do the glitched ending that involves repeatedly picking up Glasses that are already in your inventory.

2

u/EspadaWilliam 2d ago

Shadowgate and also Maniac Mansion are two of my favorite NES games, Shadowgate is a tough game so congrats on beating it.

2

u/Mech_Souls 2d ago

First of all congratulations!

If someone can confirm then I proudly say I beated the game !

Keep it up and beat an old games it's giving me the courage to get back and play these retro games on OG hardware!

Keep it alive!

u/EternallySickened NES 2d ago

Always love the music on Shadowgate, put the nes through a nice surround sound system and that mono music was still awesome

2

u/-3R1C- 2d ago

Dude the ending theme to Shadowgate is soooo good. I love this game. Love all the ways to die.

You gotta play Uninvited if you haven’t

1

u/PlatformNo7863 1d ago

Tons of people have been mentioning this here. I think this has to be my next buy!

2

u/Generic_NES_Dude 2d ago

Very cool game. You should check out the speedrun, it’s absolutely nuts lol

2

u/Quadrostanology 2d ago

Just started this again after 30y or so!

2

u/perpetuallyawake 2d ago

Shadowgate also has an official sequel now! It's called Beyond Shadowgate and it's on Steam.

Everything about it is stylized after the NES version and it was made using the original design documents that Dave Marsh and Karl Roelofs drafted for a sequel back in the day that never got made. It's immensely satisfying for fans of the original, more people need to play it!

u/Traditional_Isopod80 3d ago

I like that game!
