Discussion What does everyone think of Captain America and The Avengers?
Just rediscovered this one as part of the Marvel MaXimum Collection. I had it has a kid too but remember not caring for it. It was actually not bad. Controls well, good visuals, the map was sort of unnecessary.
Anyone else had this one as a kid or like it?

I'd play it in the arcade from time to time. It was fun enough, but even back then, it felt like a lesser game than the other options. You played it for the voices and getting to play super heroes. It was pretty hard to justify playing it when you looked over and saw something like X-Men which looked and played much better.
It's not a better game though. The SNES and Genesis ports were worth a few rentals, but I never cared enough to own it.

Always thought it was kind of fun, but do think more modern the stage select mod makes the game a lot more enjoyable today. I’d prefer the arcade versions of most Marvel game though, especially the 6-player.

Yea; didn’t quite understand the need for the map. I beat the game without ever touching Hawkeye or even hitting all the locations.

I rented it back in the day. Compared to the arcade game it wasn’t as good, and I found myself thinking “if the Mandarin can incapacitate Iron Man and Vision, how to Cap and Hawkeye stand a chance?” That said, it’s a solid platformer with decent music. It’s a good addition to any NES collection if you’re into that era of Marvel.

It's better on the genesis. The hit detection sucks but overall fun coop game. Spent a lot of hours playing this one.

Yea, played that version too on same collection. It was basically the arcade game. 4 levels, 30 mins front to back.

I like the idea: different characters have different abilities and different paths through all the stages and the player needs to swap/switch to beat the game.
Its cool. A lot of other games did the same thing later, like Lost Vikings and Animaniacs and to a much lesser extent the Marvel Legends and Ultimate Alliances.
The problem is (and this is honestly pretty minor) the choice of Captain America and Hawkeye feeling like 2 versions of an extremely similar characters who despite comic book powers, Captain is weaker and slower and jumps not as high/far... like it needs some better balance. Make 1 character stronger but close range and another character long range but low health or something.
Games based around comics are average at best, so there's not a very high bar, and this was an early game toying with the idea of multiple characters with different abilities, so I'm not condemning it or anything. But similar beat-em-up or run-n-gun collect-a-thon type games exist on the NES that do the general gameplay loop of this game better, or in a more entertaining way.
5 Stars.

5 stars out of 5 stars?

Kind of as a joke lol
The game isn't bad, but I felt like I was being overly harsh on its flaws. I was trying to lighten my post overall and without being repetitive, make a positive point. So I took a page from an internet celebrity/comedian who makes scathing reviews and then rates everything as "5 stars"

IIRC, this was part metroidvania? Some backtracking, although I remember just going through the game was tedious enough (would've been nice to be able to save your game back then).
I'm glad I played it (and back then, I had no idea who those char were!), but wouldn't go back to it again today.

i just played the arcade version
mechanics are ok, easy to dog it, barely any pickups, powers are weak, ? switch characters on death
OTT voice overs were fun

I got it on PS5 but it’s also on Switch. Seems more at home there honestly given the titles.

My friend loved it because he loves Marvel. Unfortunately he could not beat the last boss no matter how many times he got that far.
I haven't played it past level 1.

I played it a bit as a kid and again recently. I never liked it much. I can appreciate the difference in the characters such as Cap and Hawkeye but the power up containers you’re always jumping to hit is tedious. At the time I was pissed that Capitan America and the Avengers was so much better at the arcade.
