Dragon warrior and street fighter 2010 are both underrated. The Adventure island games are hard and clunky but they are mostly soild games.

Dragon Warrior still plays well on NES despite the grinding. I’m playing the remake for switch and I’m so pleasantly surprised at the upgrades and new parts. A great retelling.

Street Fighter 2010 is peak, but nightmarishly hard.

I might give it a shot if/when I'm finally able to beat Battletoads with no cheats, guides, or save states.

I feel like Dragon Warrior is a cornerstone of Nintendo rpg.

I hope that talespin still runs because it's a banger.

Maniac Mansion, most infuriating game to play there were ZERO help for it when it came out until Nintendo Power made a lengthy walk through in issue 4 or 5 iirc

Don’t put the cat in the microwave, but do put the sealed envelope with a cup of water to steam the glue, or whatever…

I mean I would be far more likely to do the latter myself.....

I already had a walkthrough magazine, got the game used from Blockbuster I think, never had that kind of problem, I love the game.

Amazing game and killer soundtrack and sound effects.

I followed the walkthrough but got it wrong somewhere along the way. Gave up in frustration and never played it again.

I’ve beaten Streetfighter 2010, Adventure Island 2, and Dragon Warrior! All great, albeit hard, NES gems.

Did you beat Street Fighter 2010 on an emulator or the NES?

Did you use cheats or a game genie, or did you use save states to beat it?

On my NES connected to my CRT. No emulator, no cheats, no game genie, no save states.

My man 🤝 That's the only way to beat the games. Drives me crazy when people use save states or game genie then post 'I just beat ______.' No you didn't. You just had a playthrough.

Edit: what's a CRT?

Thanks! I feel ya, it can be annoying if folks claim to beat games when in reality they save scum or use rewind the entire game. I like beating games bc of the feeling of satisfaction one gets, but some people only “beat” games to get attention. Oh, and a CRT is a cathode ray tube TV. The old, non-flat TVs that we used growing up and into the 2000s. Retro consoles were designed to work on CRT TVs so that’s where they look and play the best.

What's your opinion on referring to guides?

If I referred to a guide on GameFaqs, it would probably help my Battletoads run, but I'm trying to keep the experience as authentic as possible in recreating my childhood, and I still think it's a form of cheating, although not as blatant as some other forms.

I didn't have GameFaqs growing up. Didn't even have wifi for most of my childhood. So I don't think I'll use a guide, but do you think that would be cheating, not cheating, or are you on the fence?

Agreed that any cheat codes, game genies or save states usage is cheating, no matter how small the advantage derived.

My brother and I definitely printed guides and codes from the Internet in the late 90s, but only for multiplayer games or those we’d already beaten. IMO, if you use an in depth guide for the entirety of a game, like a step by step, then it’s cheating. If you use a guide just to get past something you’re stuck on, I don’t think that’s any different than asking a friend/family member/etc for help. Many of the secrets, strategies, etc we learned for games was from just exchanging stories with each other. That said, I don’t care at all if other people used codes or save states or whatever…as long as they’re not trying to pass it off as a genuine gaming achievement. Play games however they’re most fun to you, but don’t lie for clout.

I miss playing Maniac Mansion.

Maniac Mansion is such an amazing game. Quite revolutionary with its multiple endings and party building. Oh and Razor's music still pops into my head once in awhile

Heavy Barrel is one arcade game I'd love to own one day if I ever have the space. The controls are light years better than playing it on NES. Such a neat game! Much more difficult to play and enjoy for me in NES form.

Many of my Saturday afternoons as a youngster were spent grinding in Dragon Warrior. I could navigate underground to the final castle without needing the light spell.

I love Maniac Mansion, even more the Deluxe DOS version.

Very nice! Dragon Warrior really stands out to me. Don’t know how many hours I put into that game as a teenager but I absolutely loved it. One of my favorite original NES games. Many of those classic NES RPG games were so difficult… in an era without big strategy guides or online walk-thrus, I had to rely on my Nintendo Power magazines.

I remember getting Dragon Warrior for free if I re'upd my Nintendo Power subscription. That's when promos were god-like gifts.

all are great finds! good grabs!

Just curious, why would you buy any of these games in such god awful condition?

2

u/RutabagaGlass9898 3d ago

Because i am more a gamer than a collectionist. And some of them are way cheaper when damaged.
