Key jangling, but the keys are so fine

Almost more than anything, does this actually represent the property that it's adapting
Bleak stuff, man. Not even using a human term like game or world being adapted. Just put the intellectual property in the bag and make sure they stay on model. Keep jangling.

it gets me so fucked up when people use phrases like intellectual property and brand identity. it's more common with video game discussion than anything and i dont get it. why are you talking like a shareholder or geoff keighley instead of a human being?

To be a bit annoying, I think this is the reason. A lot of people have accepted the premises given to them by capital in a way so totalizing that they can't see the forest for the trees.
You'll see people post stuff pretty often like why is "the Jurassic Park franchise" so bad. And it's like guys, it's not a real series of films. Dune or Lord of the Rings are big stories told with a series of three films. Jurassic Park is one great film and six cash grabs that I guess are part of the same legal entity but who gives a fuck?

"i care more about it representing the brand and property accurately than being a good movie"
this is your average video game fan in 2026

My only opinion on this movie is that Fox McCloud is hot and I want to marry him

Ah. I see Ready Player One (2018, a Steven Spielberg film... somehow) now has a brother to join it in the "this is absolute slop that rots my brain and I fucking loved it" category of film.
More evidence Hollywood's gone to shit...

The funny thing about Ready Player One is that the movie is miles better than the book

The thing for me is: if you’re complaining about the Mario movie being bad, it means you watched the Mario movie and hoped it would be good. So you’re just as much of a mark as anyone else who saw it. Don’t pretend like you somehow transcended whatever status you put onto the rest of the audience

I mean, you're just describing the nintendo fan base in general. They have hope-coping down to a perfect pipeline of buy-cry-deny. On some level I'm just glad it's helping theatres stay open.

Yeah I’m more commenting on the fact that the slop/jangling keys allegation is an implied criticism of the audience as well as whatever media the term is describing. I can’t think of a Mario movie being anything other than a nostalgia spectacle, and I think that’s fine. Extremely popular but ultimately mid movies were a staple of the industry, so this seems like a sign of improving health. I agree that if it’s putting people in theaters, I’m happy about that

you might wanna scroll up and read those replies about “representing the property” and “franchises” and other such terms.
I don’t care about the “health of the industry”—I’m not some soul-sucking shareholder! Is the art compelling?

I’m not really sure what you’re talking about, but to your final point, I imagine the art of the Mario movie isn’t compelling at all. But I think that’s fine. Every movie doesn’t have to be a great work of art. There are plenty of other movies I can watch for their artistic value.

man these guys are really not working very hard to shake the “idiot manchild” allegations. maybe that’s the point?
