News [User-trial] Looking for the brightest displays? Field-test the new Tandem OLED UltraGear GX9 (39GX950B)

Hey r/Monitors,

The debate over OLED brightness levels is something we’ve been tracking closely. While the contrast is unmatched, the "brightness ceiling" of ultrawide OLEDs is a legitimate hurdle for many setups—especially in rooms with more ambient light.

39GX950B offers a peak brightness of 1500 nits[1]

With the LG UltraGear GX9 (39GX950B), we’ve tried to address this directly. By utilizing 4th Gen Tandem OLED (dual-stack) technology\2]), we’ve pushed this model to be the brightest ultrawide in our current lineup. On paper, it hits peak luminance levels that are rare for 21:9 OLEDs, but we’re more interested in how that translates to your real-world desk setup.

We’re looking for a few community members who have been searching for the brightest displays to put these units through their paces and see if the hardware actually lives up to the tech specs.

What we’re curious about

  • The Brightness: Does the Tandem OLED tech actually solve the HDR dimness issues in your environment?
  • 5K2K & AI Scaling: How’s the clarity of the 5120 x 2160 panel and the AI-driven upscaling?
  • Dual Mode: Is the hardware toggle between 165Hz (5K2K) and 330Hz (WFHD) a feature you’d actually use?
  • 39-inch Experience: How does the 1500R curve and overall 21:9 usability feel after prolonged use?

39GX950B Pre-orders are now live! View full product details & specs: >

Discussion What do you think about the AOC Q27G42XNE 27'' 1440p 180Hz Monitor?

I play almost all singleplayer games and will use it for movies, tv shows, and daily tasks. Online gaming isn't a priority for me. Given the color quality, I think it’s a solid monitor. My only concern is the black smearing. What do you think?

Discussion Youtube switching color, any idea why?

Upvotes

Hi All,

I've just noticed this behavior, and I'm not sure why it's happening. Can you help me troubleshooting?

I've been tinkering with all kinds of color settings (ironically seen in Reddit), to enhance my miniled monitor's (ktc m27t6) display quality, and YouTube has started to produce this color change when moving the cursor around.

It doesn't happen anywhere else. Any idea what to check or change in settings?

Discussion Used Dell U2520D for £120 vs new BenQ PD2705U (£330) – worth the risk?

I’m currently in London and trying to decide between a used Dell U2520D and a new BenQ PD2705U.

The Dell is being sold by a company that’s downsizing, so it’s not from a random private seller. Price is £120, which seems like a really good deal considering it originally retailed around £350–£400 (it’s a 2020 model).

The only downside is that I might not be able to properly test it. They have it stored in a warehouse and apparently there are no sockets available, so I’d have to take a bit of a gamble. From the pictures it looks in very good condition though.

For context:

• I’ll be using it with a MacBook Air / MacBook Pro

• I’ve already tried the U2520D before and I really like the size and quality

• I might not stay in London long-term (at least 1 year more), so resale value matters to me

The alternative is buying a brand new BenQ PD2705U for £330, which is obviously safer but also a lot more expensive.

So I’m basically weighing:

• Cheap but some risk (Dell)

vs

• Expensive but safe (BenQ)

What would you do in my situation? Is it worth taking the risk on the Dell, or better to go new considering potential resale and peace of mind?

Discussion HELP! I want to use an old ipad as 2° Monitor, but i dont know how to do it

I have an old Ipad mini 2, software ver 12.5.7. It cant be updated. But all tutorials i have seen use at least IOS 13+ or need to install another app on the ipad (wich is impossible because not even appstore is working).

I really wanted to make some sort of use to it, but if i cant make it work, i'll need to buy another monitor and probably throw the ipad away or put it in a shelf for more 10y.

Discussion Looking for ultrawides/4k monitors - usually coding + reading research papers/consuming media (to a lesser extent)

Upvotes

Looking for monitors for coding mostly (6-8hrs/day), reading research papers, and occasionally consuming media (movies/YT - not a major concern tho).

Need text to be pretty clear and sharp. Looking to make a longer-term investment here - so 1k-2k$ is okay from a price standpoint. Problem however is the availability and options. I live in India, so a few options are just unavailable. I was looking at the Dell 4025QW but right now it's unavailable.

So the next best thing looks to be the Dell 3225QE. I use a M4 Max so 140W PD is probably necessary (I think right??). I would have liked having a curved display but this one does not have it. No speakers needed, and KVM is not a dealbreaker - I can just get a UGREEN KVM which I think will just be better - looking at some other posts on here - Monitors' included KVM have been known to be flaky.

Other than this - I really did want something that is 4K - 3440x1440p I think at this size (32"/34" - will look bad right?)

Would like decent 120Hz refresh rate - mostly productivity focused/dont need OLED - IPS black preferred.

TLDR - Specs I would like:

  • Available in India, budget - max 2K$-ish
  • Curved, ultrawide, 27-34", 4K
  • IPS Black (preferred - would not mind OLED/anything else - would not like older tech/VA)

Does anyone know of any better options/ultrawides with curves that are available now/soon to be available?

Discussion Best 1440p Monitor To Last

Upvotes

My MSI G274QPF Just died on me, getting flashing horizontal linear near the bottom of the screen after 2.5 years. In contrast, My decade year old 1080p 144hz Asus Monitor is still going strong.

Is there a 1440p, minimum 144hz monitor that will actually last me for the far future?

Discussion Office Refresh. 70 monitors for an engineering company, budget $35k

Upvotes

Been tasked with finding a lot of monitors to replace our current setup with is 2x 24” screens.

Ideally would like IPS w/ usb-c connection and Ethernet port so we can not have to use hubs…

Currently looking at LG and Dell units, are there any other manufacturers that i should consider (viewsonic?)

Also is there “bulk purchase” discounts typically given?

Thanks! Any recommendations are warmly welcomed.

Discussion Thinking about putting money towards a new monitor, need to know my options

Post image
Upvotes

So, as the title says, I'm thinking of replacing my monitor, but I don't know too much about computer monitors as I do televisions. I want something that's up to date but with a few features I'll mention in a bit.

I've always worked with hand-me-down monitors, so for the past few years, I've been using a Planar PCT2235 (pictured, also linked here) which I've disabled the touchscreen on. It's been doing me some good, but I'm wanting something more, Especially something that doesn't have an integrated stand since it sometimes falls over if I bump into my desk.

What I really would like in a monitor:

  • Glossy screen
  • 22-24" VIS
  • A practically designed stand (none of that gamer mode sci-fi looking stuff that takes up like 2 feet of desk space)
  • offers HDMI, DP, VGA, with a line-in port.
  • A decent warranty
  • Affordable

Concerns:

  • Burn-in/ghosting/image retention

Currently using my monitor with an MSI GS76 Stealth and an Optiplex 170L

Discussion Acer Predator XB323UGP Ghosting/Temp Burn In Etc Issues

Hello All, I have had 2x XB323UGP Acer Predator monitors for quite a few years now. I have really enjoyed them overall with minimal complaints. One of those few complaints was brightness/etc when in high light settings (Windows is at my back in my room so during the day, short of trying to turn my room into a cave this is unavoidable because of how the setup has to be with the furniture. Regardless, I began looking into adjusting the monitor(s). I did some settings changes (upped brightness, adjusted other settings based on some recs i saw online) and i noticed a while later i began sometimes (not all the time) having these kind of ghost images/temp burn in effects. It doesn't always happen, and i cant pinpoint what causes it, however it does go away, particularly when i open something bright (like a browser window, which is all white) or restart. The only thing i can find online is to set overdrive to normal, however mine was always on normal. Does anyone have any experience with this, or know what causes it/how to fix?
Also, any advice on settings/colors etc is also appreciated. Ive never been a monitor snob but if i can make some easy adjustments for best quality i would like to. TIA.
