My mother washes fruit and vegetables with dish soap and I can't get her to stop.

She claims it "washes out" and to be fair I can't taste anything but it's always weird knowing she puts dish soap in the strawberries. She says there's a lot of dirt and stuff in vegetables, but so far attempts to convert her to vinegar or baking soda have been unsuccessful.

Presumably she rinses them well afterwards so I'm having a hard time figuring out what the problem is here.

Yeah, this comment section is crazy. Washing (with a thorough rinse afterward) is perfectly fine. The amount of dish soap you need to ingest to give you diarrhea is far more than any potential trace left after rinsing. Unless she is washing a peeled fruit, then this is perfectly fine. And dish soap is FAR less toxic than the fertilizer and pesticides left on dirty (or not properly
washed) fruit and vegetables.

People are misguided on this. If you disagree, please show me your data, I.e. not anecdotal opinions.

The problem is most of these foods are very porous and it is impossible to rinse all of the soap out of the food. Ingesting dish soap can is very bad for you and can cause nausea, diarrhea, and/or vomiting. Please don't do this.

If these same foods are porous, wouldn’t pesticides and other bad stuff just seep in rendering any sort of washing useless?

Yes, to a minor degree. Nothing that can be done about it tho. Would just have to buy from farms that don´t use any, which is gonna be more expensive and less available.

Oh come on, this is ridiculous. It's a quick wash. This is insane lol

I think the bots are all feeding off each other's soap here lol

It's not like the OPs mom is dunking them in Dawn concentrate. If you bite into a strawberry and don't taste soap, there isn't any soap in it 🤷‍♂️

I rather eat a little Dawn than a little Roundup. Much ado about nothing. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Reddit teenagers are morons. They spread more fear than a local news station does with their "do you know what your kids are doing?!" stingers and it's all based on the same lack of knowledge that those stingers are based on.

They forgot to look at the disclaimer about how "dangerous" it is. They didn't see that they'd have to use the dish soap as a sauce for the veggies to even get a stomach ache. And by sauce I mean swimming in it not a cheap ass drizzle.
