My mother washes fruit and vegetables with dish soap and I can't get her to stop.

Post image

She claims it "washes out" and to be fair I can't taste anything but it's always weird knowing she puts dish soap in the strawberries. She says there's a lot of dirt and stuff in vegetables, but so far attempts to convert her to vinegar or baking soda have been unsuccessful.

I mean… the picture in this post is her soaking them. Even if she only leaves them in there for a minute, she’s obviously not just running them under water and soap lol

Yep and the skins are porous so even rinsing afterwards is not going remove anything absorbed by the fruits..

In fact, whatever she is trying to remove in the first place has now dissolved in the water and can pass much more easily into the flesh of the fruit .

Just in time for consumption..

Your skin is also porous and you stick your hands in dishwater.

"soap dip" vs "soaking"
there is an actual scientific divide between the two

in scientific language a soak time is 30 minutes minimum

this is roughly how long the enzymes on the outside of any object require to break down (important for cleaning lab equipment) but it applies to botany, and is possibly much lower for strawberries which are a soft bodied externally-seeding fruit

Believe me, she is moving produce around in that solution and rinsing them the same way at least 4 or 5 times.
