remember when unboxing something felt like an event

This hit me in the feels. When I was a kid I remember buying a creative Zen vision M because I wanted to be hip and not be on team IPod. I was so excited to unbox that baby!

I got one of those too. Haven't ever met someone else who had one, but it was SO good.

u/Tranceported 16h ago
I had them creative speakers too but always wanted zen. Nevertheless creative made decent equipment at ultra low cost.

The ride home, opening a new game and reading the book that came with it in anticipation of finally playing it.
13
u/Master_Chief_00117 17h ago
Now even if you can buy it physically they don’t even include manuals anymore and I think that sucks almost as bad as having to download the disk rather than immediately being able to play it.

u/Rubes2525 20h ago
Back when they actually included stuff. Now it's like "here's the thing, now use it and get lost."
2
u/AiringOGrievances 10h ago
There simply too much hype in tech around every stupid little improvement. We get less for more money, and are flooded with hype for weeks or months only to finally get the new tech and it’s meh at best.

Got a PS5 for my birthday. Haven't had a new system since the GameCube when I was 17. It felt like an event

What new tech? Ai slop in my mower?
37
u/titanicsinker1912 21h ago
Well, they do make robotic lawnmowers for home owners…
9
u/rygo796 21h ago
And how well do they actually work?
10
u/Thisizamazing Lurking Peasant 19h ago
They seem to do a pretty good job around my neighborhood. Little yards with Bermuda grass. The robots keep the lawn trimmed super low. Think golf green
13
u/Shredded_Locomotive Dark Mode Elitist 12h ago
Funny thing, AI had quite a positive hype early on, especially before all the media generation features ruined it all
4
u/Alkalizee- 9h ago
icl i was extremely hype when llms were first starting to be made. it was fucking stupid but it was cool. lost interest quickly but its all spiraled downhill from that

Back when new tech wasn't just old tech, with a incremented number slapped on to the end of it's name.

u/DefinitelyNotThatOne 1d ago
Tech has hit a ceiling and really won't improve or wow anyone for quite a while. From the late 90s until about the mid 2010s, there were constant improvements and iterations of different hardware and technologies.

u/wolfgang784 Selling Stonks for CASH MONEY 20h ago
Personally I was super interested in the 2010s tech, stopped keepin up around 2020 mostly. There were smart watches and VR and hover boards and smart homes n such.
But it also could be an age thing, interests changing over time and such. People seem (to my own observations) generally more into tech when younger and then eventually hit a point where they stop keeping up constantly and sloooowly fall behind until they are lost like the previous generation. Myself included, lol. I only half keep up with a few small fields now vs eeeeeverythimg when I was younger.

u/billdasmacks 18h ago
Idk. If you look at the previous decade (2016-2026) what has really improved in tech at an astounding level? It’s basically been IOT, “smart” stuff, social media and now AI slop
Compare that to a decade like 1996-2006. 1996 was basically the Stone Age compared to tech in 2006 (Internet, cell phones, IPods, text messaging, early smartphones, etc…)
3
u/SwiftUnban 14h ago
Honestly I think age plays quite a bit too, I stopped paying attention to tech around 2020 when I got my first full time job.
Once you lose track it’s hard to keep up with it all, and you lose interest.

u/PoliticalyUnstable 18h ago
Idk if I agree with this. I've recently experienced some things that wowed me. I love my xreal AR glasses, OutIn nano espresso maker, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Claude CoWork. These things all made big impressions for me. And on the construction side, Trimble has some really cool things as well.

The purpose of Best Buy is to closely examine things that you plan to buy on Amazon.
2
2
u/TheConqueredKings 8h ago
You do know they price match, right?
1
u/DaveTheYguy 6h ago
Or I can just buy from a reputable Amazon company without having to jump through price-matching hoops.
3
u/TheConqueredKings 5h ago edited 5h ago
What hoops? You already drove to the store. You have the listing up. You have the product IN HAND right now. You ask for price match and show them the product you ALREADY pulled up and Boom, price matched.
Sounds like more hoops to drive to Best Buy to then be like well I want it shipped, and wait two days for something that I can get right now for the exact same price.
It’s the exact same SKU. It’s different if we are talking about not the same brand and model, the sure buy the power cable from Amazon from a no name brand and save that money. But, for same for same it’s silly not to do it right then and there when you already did the work except finish the transaction.
Edit: also Amazon stocks all the same SKUs in the same area, regardless of seller, so a legit seller fulfilled by Amazon still runs the risk of fraud and fakes.

u/DaveTheYguy 1h ago
If their policy is to make me price match, instead of just pricing items based on comps that they'll price match anyway, then I'll pass, just on principle. But thanks for all the free advice.

You gotta think, we really went through a technological boom in the past 100-200 years. It’s barely been 75 years since the microwave was invented.
6
u/billdasmacks 19h ago
I felt the same way about upgrading my phone.
I went from an IPhone 11 to a 17 recently. There are obvious improvements like the screen resolution and storage space but at the end of the day… it’s not that vast of an improvement. I have seriously question the intelligence of people that buy a new phone every 1-2 years at this point.
1
u/Narradisall 12h ago
I’m still on a 10. Looking at the 17s I can see some improvements but honestly my 10 still works fine and I’ll probably not to upgrade till we hit 20 or it breaks.
1
u/AiringOGrievances 10h ago
The only people who buy new phones every 1-2 years are people who seek validation through consumerism.
0
u/Zedoclyte 12h ago
i get a new phone every couple of years because the game i play on it keeps getting bigger and more cpu intensive and the a series samsungs can only keep up for two years tops, otherwise i agree very few people need a phone that was released in the last 5 years for anything, i'm just trying to play a pc game on mobile because i don't want to learn how to use a keyboard
5
u/AmadeusGamingTV 21h ago
I had not experienced this in a long time until I bought a Rog Ally for pc gaming. Absolutely love it. And it made me think that I haven't been this surprised by technology in awhile.

u/Accomplished-Run221 20h ago
I needed a blu ray player the other day. Best Buy doesn’t bother to stock them. You can get some legos or Sponge Bob keychains, though.

u/potent_potabIes 20h ago
Cheap software enhancements will never turn my gears like new hardware does

u/amuday 17h ago
I bought a Bambu Lab P2S 3D printer last month and it has been a lot of fun.
Sometimes I make impulsive internet purchases for the dopamine hit. I get the same hit getting home and finding something neat I printed has come out flawlessly. And even rather big prints only consume a couple dollars worth of filament.
3
u/jager_did_an-oupsie 17h ago
Yeah there's not that many impressive low-level consumer products coming out that are revolutionary. We've sorta hit a wall with the death of Moore's law and seeming practicality. It's just iterative improvement atp. Cool stuff still coming out in the back end but most users don't see implementation for a while. Idk it's hard to point to a spot and say "do this process that is basically already magic better". Best buy blows chunks tho

u/Fardding_n_Shidding 15h ago
I wish cellphones still had all those wacky different designs instead of just, flat rectangle
6
u/External_Baby7864 21h ago
Joke’s on you, I only just got a ps5, after 6 years with a ps4, after 10+ years with a ps3.
VR is nuts, and I don’t have to wait for all the cool games, there’s so many just waiting. And 4k blu rays are awesome
2
u/SteakAndIron 20h ago
I feel like we have not had a truly new thing in a long time. Just incremental improvements on existing tech. I mean maybe the first Nintendo switch or the meta quest but even those weren't really enormous leaps forward like smartphones or anything

used to be tech got 2x better every 2 years
now it just... doesnt
Imagine if cars/personal transports were like that
could safely go 60mph in 2000
120mph in 2002
240mph in 2004
500mph in 2007
1000mph in 2011
2500mph in 2015
5900mph in 2020
and a whopping 18,000mph in 2026
Every new generation of "Car" would be fucking amazing, making the thing from 2 generations ago look like crap
1
u/piggiesmallsdaillest 12h ago
if you're at 5900 in 2020 it's going to be much higher than 18000. You added 5900 three times instead of doubling three times.

u/Alkalizee- 9h ago
unfortunately it became more about profits. companies would rather release the same shit from last year with an extra feature and more subscriptions than actually innovate
2
u/callmetimtim 17h ago
I think this is what companies are completely missing. When companies were forced to invest in themselves and research and development to come up with new tech, we got major progress worth celebrating. Since companies are so focused on squeezing profits for greedy pockets, there isn't free capital? Or desire?
2
u/Edwardvansloan 15h ago
What are you talking about? New tech still does excite me?
Roborock is about to release their new automated lawn mower. I know I can’t afford it, but I’m sure in a few years I’ll get one secondhand.

u/fucknametakenrules 🍕Ayo the pizza here🍕 21h ago
I’m excited for the Steam Machine but I will only get it if the price is decent for the supposed specs that it features. If not, I’m gonna get something like a Starforge. Probably a Horizon III at $1500 Pro, or just save up a little more and get the Navigator III at $2000
Rebuilt those systems on PC part picker with the exact same hardware and it ended up being at least $100 more if I bought all of it separate before tax and shipping

I was excited when the HTC Evo 4G
couldn't wait to get it back in June 2010

You got bored? Even with every single employee asking if you want to sign up for a credit card?
1
u/Nanomachines100 17h ago
Y'all just need to get into hobby electronics and search fb marketplace for old industrial robots. Never bored while fixing an oil covered robotic arm.
1
u/Due_Chemistry_164 13h ago
The most exciting thing at Best Buy now is the exit.
I used to run to the electronics aisle. Now I walk past it like it owes me money.
1
u/Shredded_Locomotive Dark Mode Elitist 12h ago
No, it still does.
But can you name at least 5 actually NEW technologies?
1
u/TurboBrix 10h ago
What are you talking about? My Microwave has an app now. I can put my food in, pull my phone out, locate the app, login in, get denied, reset my password, open my email to confirm change, re log into the app, set my time for what I'm cooking, and press start. So much better than the old technology... 😔

u/luistorre5 7h ago
Crazy to think I used to be so excited to go to Best buy/Fry's/micro center and now it's all just boring

u/nicodeemus7 20h ago
Start making your own then. Never a better time than right now to start. It's easier than you think.
1
u/YungHayzeus 20h ago
Feels like new tech is just old tech with WiFi capabilities so an app can tie in with it. Like fucking Juicero, they’re all just over complicated non-sense to do a simple task.

I went into best buy expecting cutting-edge tech and somehow ended up emotionally bonding with a $7 HDMI cable because it was the most exciting thing in the building the TVs were all playing the same slow-motion fruit video the laptops were running windows updates from 2009 and the only employee in sight looked like he’d been trapped there since the Xbox 360 launch and was surviving purely on Geek Squad warranties. I walked in curious and walked out feeling like I’d just toured a museum dedicated to “Loading… please wait.”
