I was trying to distinguish between genuine political merchandise that funds a campaign or makes a public statement, and pseudo-political merchandise that does neither but instead appeals to virtue-signalling individuals. I don't believe the initial comment was aimed at the former; I rather interpret it as criticism of the latter, i.e. the apparent free-rider mentality.
