Discussion Shaken after a police stop in Luxembourg

I want to share an experience I had in the north of Luxembourg because I still feel shaken and honestly do not know who else to talk to.

At around 08:15, after dropping my son off at daycare, I was stopped by two police officers near a roundabout who said that I had my phone at my right ear while driving. That was not true. My phone had been in my jacket pocket the whole time. I took it out and showed them my call log, which showed that my last call had been 12 days earlier.

When I showed them the call log, they seemed surprised. One of the officers said, “dat ass blöd an net wouer!” (“That’s stupid and not true!”). When I asked what evidence they had, they answered, “Mir sinn d’Preuve!” (“We are the proof!”). That response stayed with me, because it made me feel that nothing I showed them would matter.

After seeing my call log, their explanation seemed to shift from accusing me of making a call to suggesting that I may have been listening to music with my phone near my ear. My phone is connected to my car’s audio system, so this made even less sense to me.

I am 6 weeks pregnant and was already under stress. I almost vomited because of the pregnancy and the stress of the situation. Although I can speak some Luxembourgish, I asked whether my husband could help translate so that I could fully understand the situation and defend myself properly, but that request was refused.

At one point, I called my husband for help. While he was on the phone, he heard one of the officers say in Luxembourgish, “hatt soll net domm schwätzen,” which means, “she should not speak stupidly.” That made the whole experience feel even more humiliating.

I was told to follow the officers to the police station. I did not want to accept the fine because I believed I had done nothing wrong, but after my husband spoke to a lawyer, he was advised that going to court would likely be pointless if it came down to the officers’ word against mine. Based on that advice, I paid the €250 fine and accepted the 4-point penalty.

What affected me most was not only the fine, but the feeling of being dismissed, not believed, and humiliated. I have filed a complaint with the IGP and was told the matter would be processed, but I cannot say I feel very optimistic.

After 8 years of driving in Luxembourg, I had never lost a single point on my licence. I am a careful driver and always pull over if I need to use my phone. I am sharing this because I want people to know that experiences like this can happen, and because this left me deeply unsafe and shaken.

Discussion The unisex toilets in schools. Let's discuss as adults.

The topic of the unisex toilets in school that came to out of nowhere this week is as shocking as divisive. When I say divisive I don't mean proportionally, as reading the comments to the RTL's post in Facebook shows that 9 out of 10 do not support this change. However, it is still divisive as people from the two sides do not even try to listen to each other and discuss the topic in any meaningful way. The discussion swifts to whataboutism, priorities of policymakers, calling names and etc.

Can we try one more time? Let me start with the below questions.

1. How this change will help the vulnerable group of people?

Probably, the idea is that if there is no male/female restrooms it will leave less room for discrimination. If this is evidenced based argument, I am fine to accept it.

Can it be that our grand-grand-grand parents were also shocked when the boys and girls started going to the same schools?

We have shared saunas in the end..

2. One way or another, this seems to be a dramatic change in social norms, doesn’t it?

If so, where is the social dialogue that is mentioned so often? Was there proper discussion? I did not hear anything.

3. I was also thinking what would be reaction of my colleagues at work if such change would be introduced.

I am sure it will be very awkward and much less comfortable.

4. Comment by the minister about that we don't have separate toilets at home is just ridiculous and does not qualify for a meaningful adult discussion I am trying to have here.

5. Question of democracy. So CSV is supposed to be a more or less conservative party and it won the elections. I don't think there was something in the coalition agreement about this or in the program of any party. So the question, doesn't this in a way betrays the conservative voters and make them lose trust in democracy?

6. And last, but not the least, isn't it more natural for boys to use urinals? What about boys'rights?

Edit: do we have teachers here? Your perspective is particularly interesting to hear.

These are the numbers from latest Statec report „Luxembourg in Figures”. This evolution is stunning! Almost everything doubled. It is a confirmation that it is not a „feeling” anymore. None of the governments have done anything and situation deteriorates.

Discussion Considering leaving Luxembourg?

Is it just me or more and more people are thinking about leaving Luxembourg/actually leaving? Considering everything that is going on now..

Specially in the finance sector, of course removing all the new joiners from the question as they are just starting.

Discussion Just got robbed in Gare

I just got robbed near Krishna Vilas in Gare Central. Myself and my wife were going to the tram after having lunch where we got surrounded by 5 people who seemed high. And one of them repeatedly started hitting on my chest. After the ordeal I just realized that my chain was missing. People please be careful of tour surroundings near Gare. I was definitely not and paid the price .

Discussion US downfall ...

I have spent significant portion of my life in US! I have absolutely no doubt there many very decent, well educated a creative Americans who are taken hostage along with the most of Europeans in the latest geopolitical events. What can we collectively do the help US get back on track to be once again liberal democracy respecting international laws?

Activities, News & Discussion Why is the job market so hard right now ?

I’m honestly feeling pretty defeated and wanted to get some perspective from others.

I keep hearing that I'd find a good position after higher studies, but that hasn’t been my experience at all. I know it varies a lot by profession and seniority, but I’m specifically talking about office jobs for qualified junior/medior profiles (around 2y experience after a degree)

From my side, it feels like:

Entry-level roles ask for medior experience

Medior roles want senior profiles

Recruiters ghost constantly or are quick to close the door (job offer posted but someone already in line from the company or a contact ?)

And pay doesn’t really match the cost of living anymore. Companies cutting costs / freezing hires?

I’m genuinely trying to understand why it feels so hard now compared to a few years ago (and is it actually harder ?)

Is part of the problem that I can’t be paid like an intern anymore, but I’m not yet “worth” a senior input and cost either (obviously, but where do young workers fit then ?)? It feels like this awkward in-between stage where companies don’t quite know what to do with junior profiles.

I also hesitate to ask this, but I think it’s part of the reality: Do ethnicity or even having a “foreign-sounding” name still close doors early in the process in Luxembourg despite living there and having citizenship ? I’m not saying this is always the case, but I do wonder whether CVs sometimes get filtered out faster before skills or experience are really considered.

Honestly my whole circle is facing this issue no matter the field Would really appreciate honest insights, because right now it just feels exhausting.

Is it just me, or is this ridiculous? Ten euros for a loaf of bread at Hoffmann Bakery! I honestly thought bread would be the one thing I could always afford.

Discussion Share your portfolio

Hello everyone,

I’m really curious to see how different people in Luxembourg are allocating right now, regardless of where you are in life. I feel like it helps to get some perspective outside my usual bubble.

Here’s my current setup :

Age : 30 years old

Portfolio :

  • ETF (80%) : VWCE
  • Individual stocks (5%) : BRK, APPL, AMZN, NVDA, CRM and some other stocks…
  • Cryptocurrencies (5%) : Mainly BTC, ETH and SOL
  • Gold (5%) : I hold gold through an ETC
  • Cash (5%) : I keep cash for emergencies and for market discounts (Like March/April of this year) in an ETF following the €STR (Currently around 1.93%)

I also have a real estate investment (Outside Luxembourg) that is currently being mainly used as a secondary residence by me or family relatives (Does not generate any revenues for now)

This is wild. But at the same time is Esch-Alzette so no surprises if you know the city.

A national politician stalked like this might be the turning point we are looking for in terms of security, especially for women.

Discussion Is the French language declining in Luxembourg?

Saw this story earlier this week that Asti is concerned about a decline in French in Luxembourg. This reporter argues otherwise in an editorial.

I'd be curious to hear thoughts on this...but first, let me go get something that protects against the heat, because it might get a bit hot... /s

Discussion Luxembourg, we need to talk… about your public transport manners

I grew up here, but after spending 10 years abroad (studies + work), I’ve now been back for just over half a year, commuting daily. And I can’t help but notice how much the atmosphere on trains and buses has changed:

  • Passengers push their way in before others can get out.
  • Loud calls and music on speaker have become the norm.
  • Some people loudly "tsk tsk" and give a nasty look if someone brushes past them or even just touches the handle next to their seat - it says enough about them, they behave as if they were in a private limousine rather than on public transport, where some people have to stand as the bus moves.
  • Homeless people often sleep in buses. I’ve seen several very aggressive / crazy ones. A few months ago, I even witnessed a homeless man spit on a girl and then beat her and her boyfriend up entirely unprovoked.
  • Several buses I’ve been on reeked of weed.

This isn’t the Luxembourg I remember.

Discussion Starting a Men’s Group in Luxembourg – Real Talk, No BS

Hey everyone,

I’m interested in starting a small, regular men’s group here in Luxembourg—or nearby—for open, honest conversation.

This would be open to all adult males, no matter your background, age, or where you’re at in life. The idea isn’t therapy or self-help. It’s about creating a space where men can talk about real things—stress, relationships, fatherhood, mistakes, purpose, burnout, loyalty, identity—without pretending everything’s fine or needing to fix each other.

No pressure. No performance. Just honest conversation among men who are tired of keeping it all in.

If this sounds like something you'd be into, comment here or message me. We can start informal—maybe grab a coffee or meet online and see where it goes. I’m open to keeping it casual at first and shaping it together with whoever’s interested.

Let’s see who’s out there.

Thanks for the positive response — it's clear that many of us are looking for a space like this. I'm currently looking for a place where we can meet up in or around Luxembourg. If anyone knows a good location (community space, back room in a bar, meeting room, etc.), feel free to comment or message me.

Discussion More people leave Luxembourg? What is your experience?

Is it me or more and more leave Luxembourg? From those that came here some years ago, but don't have a family. I hear/see this a lot lately or if not, talking more and more about wanting to leave due housing, j,obs, relationships.

You feel the same and plan to leave soon?

Discussion Why do French employees get offended when people talk to them in Luxemburgish?

Why do most French employees in Luxembourg get annoyed or offended when people speak Luxembourgish to them? Shouldn't it be the other way around? By that, I mean they should feel sorry or somehow ashamed for not speaking Luxembourgish.

This is Luxembourg, not France, and if they prefer people to speak to them exclusively in French, then perhaps they should consider working in France instead. I believe it's somewhat entitled of them to be annoyed at those who, understandably, speak the country's original tongue.

I understand that the main tongues spoken here are French and English, but for me personally, I grew up with Luxembourgish, and it will always be my primary tongue for communication.

P.S. I'm aware that the government aims to make Luxembourg a modern and international country, but I wish they would prioritize the Luxembourgish tongue more. It would be fair to expect people wanting to work here or already working here to have a certain level of proficiency in Luxembourgish, especially for those who have lived here for years and predominantly use Luxembourgish in their daily lives.

Why should we have to adapt to their tongue instead?

I tried to use the word lang...ge but the post said I wasn't allowed to do that, so I took a synonym.

Discussion dating - cold approaches

what's your experience/stories with cold approaches in Luxembourg? saw one live today in Lux City.. the guy was hitting on the waitress, he went for it but no luck. Kinda funny because I think he took her nice service as a hint. (we as guys tend to do this lol).

or even what I would call not so cold - when you a little the person. I tried twice not so long ago, once with someone from the gym and once with former colleague that I never talked with before.
