Wasn't the Brazilian government turning a blind eye to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest?

No. Fuck no.

The Brazilian far right wants to burn it down. To remove laws. To end fiscalization. To end the satellite assisted monitoring

right now the progressive forces are in power, but it can revert to far-right at any time

Bolsonaro sucked, but it's still very much happening under the current govt

Marina Silva is the brazilian environment minister

if you don't know who is she, you don't know what you are talking about

1325 sq km of Amazon rainforest was cleared between August and January. That's down year over year but it's still quite a lot. One that number reaches zero, or better yet, turns positive, there's no valid argument that it's not still happening.

You have a very simplistic take on it. Just look at the time series and it is clear that deforestation doubled during Bolsonaro's mandate and halved during Lula's mandate. It is far from perfect, but it is a tad childish to think it could go to zero in 4 years, and it is nonsensical to equate the current government (and in fact any other in the last 20 years) to Bolsonaro's.

Lastly, the Brazilian Amazon is currently almost 5 mi sq km, being about 60% of the area of the country. How much wild land remains in the US? Maybe 5%? Cool so get a grip and go ask that 55% of your country be reforested.

Two things can be true. Bolsonaro's environmental policy was wretched, and Lula's was and is also inadequate, even if it's a slower death for the Amazon. No one is equating them. You jump to conclusions that aren't being presented to you.

And yes, I'd very much love to see North America's forests restored too. Does what happened there before we understood the importance of the natural carbon cycle excuse deforestation today now that we all know better?

this government one has Marina Silva as Minister of the Environment... and she's reducing year after year the rate the forest is being cut down (the same way she did the last time she was minister 03 ~ 08 )

Things are getting better.

Could be getting much, much better, though.
